I just read this at interlopers.net, which linked to a post on the hl2world.com forums: Half Life 2 Wiimod.

Here's the latest movie he released: HL2 Wii movie (youtube).

Sounds great for everyone that has a Wii. Technically, it looks very interesting too.

mmm... again, it's amazing how excited you can get about a console you'll likely never own. It almost feels like the wiimote pwns the mouse just as much as the mouse pwned the old gamepads for movement...

PS: I just read in the forum that you can purchase a wiimote without buying a wii... hmmmm

I've been trying to get the Wiimote to work well with PC FPS but it just doesn't go hand in hand, because you can't move the cross hair around without looking (which makes it VERY difficult to control).

It seems like they're adding a bounding box to HL2 to eliminate that. Hopefully they'll fix all the mistakes Wii developers have made in the FPS category. (Use a circle instead of a box, make it have a variable radius). Eliminating PPJoy doesn't make sense, I don't know anyone who willingly uses a joystick for an FPS game. But eliminating GlovePIE is a great step.

Great. Thank you for pointing this out!

But you cant have your wii remote work without a sensor bar that comes with the wii....

As far as I know, two infra-red sources will work just as well. It's the controller itself that determines it's location, based on the location of the two IR sources in the sensor bar.

At least, that's what I heard about it.

Yes. This is how it works. When I want to use it on my computer (which is how I've been messing with it) and use pointing stuff, I use candles.

They actually output more IR light than the sensor bar so they work better, I've noticed less "jumping" of the pointer, for example. But when it controls views or something like that, both are the same. The cable that attaches the sensor bar to the Wii, as you can imagine, is only for power. I've thought about making a "powerful" IR circuit that connects to a usb port for awhile, but I doubt that'll flourish. A lot of 3rd party companies are making wireless sensor bars now. But they're going for like $30-$40, which is ridiculous, because the thing costs close to $5-$10 to make.

To note, this is why things like sun light interfere with the Wii-mote.

Another thing: If you want to sit closer to what you're pointing at, you can put the IR transmitters closer together. Of course, you could "calculate" it with some geometry too to suite what works best for you.

The increased IR output of candles offsets the fact that the candle flame moves around?

Well, you need to remember that a flame isn't a single point of heat. The point of heat, never really changes even if the flame moves drastically, but still in the same area. It's pretty indistinguishable to the remote as heat output is coming from the same "point". I would also imagine that the remote is designed to ignore momentary spikes as any sensible device would be. (Though, the same isn't true for the accelerometers inside. It takes some heavy "mucking" to get those giving outputs you want)

It's more of an area than a point that emits heat I guess? Funny idea though, to use 'old-fashioned' candles for this purpose. One problem could be that the heat source gradually drops though, after some hours of playing.

This reminds me a bit of the TIR mod they created for HL2. Worked quite well actualy, shame the MP never got off the ground.

Not really. I've used completely different candles that are different heights and they both worked fine and without problems. I mean, there's something else going on in the calculations that I'm not sure of. Because there's a lot of "forgiveness" when it comes to this, yet it's still very accurate.

as far as the Wiimote thing goes.. I have a Nintendo Wii (16 hour wait for it), and my friend showed me how you can actually get 2 candles with nickels near th flame. with wires going to each of them and plugged into the sensor bar port. This is a makeshift sensor bar. i have no idea whatsoever how he did it. but all i know is that he did. and it looked totally awesome.. so in theory you ould just need the connector, somr wires, candles, and a couple nickels to make your own sensor bar.

PS. ill try and get him to record a video of him making it.

I'm not sure any of that setup is necessary other than the two candles mate - have a read of some of the posts above and you'll see that people are getting away with using candles alone.

What's a TIR?
It's a little device that emits IR signals that a reflected by a three point thingie mounted on a little boom or a hat. It uses these three points to move the viewpoint around in a 6DOF enviroment. Commenly used in Flight and Race sim communities because it gives a great advantages and eliminates the use of a POV switch. last year in 2005 they developed a modification that allowd this system to be used in FPS shooters, unfortunately little attention is given from this market. Actualy works quite well in a FPS.
