I want to make models for HL. I've got gmax, and an smd importer for that, and the mdl decompiler.

Now, I need an smd exporter for gmax. Anyone know where I might find one?

BTW, is this the right place to post this?

The only exporter is for 3dsMax.

I believe you need milkshape 3D to convert the .3ds files into the .smd format.

Gmax can only export to formats that are supported by the game-developers themselves in the form of "Game Packs". Seeing as Half-Life is more than 5 years old, there is little benefit in releasing a game-pack especially when Half-Life 2 is so close to retail.

So, your choices essentially are:
  • Get 3DS Max somehow, then the .smd exporter will work. Try to purchase it through your school or college or whatever to get a significant discount.
  • Get Milkshape 3D to export game formats. While weaker with animation and modelling, Milkshape is quite powerful for the number of game formats it supports (40 different formats?). It is also ideal for beginners, as it only costs $25, compared to much more expensive 3D packages.
You CAN export work out of Gmax to Half-Life, but it requires knowledge of other game formats. Also the work could become corrupted or something could easily go wrong.

Yeah, as CJ said, it's possible, but your models could screw up during the several conversion processes. I think Milkshape is the best option for you.

Unless you can get 3Dsmax at a healthy price.

Most of the solutions I've seen require me spending money... arg! All my money goes towards the Radeon 9600 XT, and I still dont have nearly enough.

I'll see whats at the site omegaslayer suggested.

EDIT: I found an SMD exporter:http://mojo.gmaxsupport.com/Files/scripts/SMDExporter1-0.zip Now to see if it works...

Yeah, I could do with a .mdl compiler for GMax as well. Everytime I try to use Milkshape it crashes though (could be something to do with the trial version).

Just as I said. You need to use milkshape to convert the files...

I'd use Milkshape, but the 30-day trial ran out, and I spent all my money on a Radeon 9600.
