I am actually going to have to play this again when it's released, as I'm certain all the bad taste from the first beta has been washed away and replaced with a sweet sugary flavor.

the current mirror is very, very, very slow. it won't load.
[EDIT]It apears they've locked the only mirror so other mirros can donwload it and upload it themselves. I wonder why this wasn't done before announcing the NS 3.0 release? Technically, it hasn't been released at all...

I've got it now, but it refuses to install unless I have Steam installed. Which, I have to say, is absolutely horrible. Anyone have anyway around this?

The SNT, university of Twente mirror (off the main site).
Whenever you click the installer, it says Steam isn't installed and refuses to install. I find this rather shocking, to be honest.
And use Getright.

Lol 2dmin, I live in the UK and I'm downloading it off an Austrailian mirror with 55k/sec
I can't be bothered to find a closer mirror and anyway, I'm in no hurry.

And it's really unnerving when you select your download from the taskbar and good 'ol Windows automatically shoves your cursor over 'cancel'.

Steam and I haven't had a very stable relationship in the past. Although I did download Steam just now, just to play NS 3.0 (ok, I cracked). It does seem to have gotten better since I last used it.

While NS3.0 is being developed for Steam and requires it to install, it does not actually require it to play. You can copy it to your regular HL folder at your own risk and load -game nsp as you would normally. The official statement I am familiar with has said that many have no problems whatsoever, but it has caused some major problems for some.

Combat seems a bit unbalanced right now... Maybe it's just the servers I've been playing? Pretty unbalanced with grenades, and it gets pretty irritating.
But otherwise, I like most of the changes NS has had. All I wish is that they would show the resource costs in the alien menu...

You know, the point of making 3.0 a public beta is for Combat to be improved. It's still an unfinished product.

Have all the idiotic NS players been hanging oout on Steam? I swear, three servers, three completely moronic, arrogant and egotistical commanders who don't know the meaning of "build an infantry portal!". Jesus. It's turning into another CS. The game would be brilliant if it wasn't for all these people playing it.
Gah. [/RANT].

You people have never played a version of beta NS, that's what happened.
Almost every map has had a square box readyroom with aaatrigger, pure black, pure d6rust, multi-colored disco lighting, etc. as a joke. It always happens, and it IS the standard of NS in beta. The final 3.0 release won't have anything like that.
There is also no guarantee that any map in the 3.0 beta will remain in 3.0 final, though Flay has had a tendency to not cut maps that really should be. i.e. Nancy. I'm worried about Angst, because not a single one of the author's maps previous has been good enough to make it, and last I saw this one shouldn't be either.

Yes, being killed directly after spawning is annoying. An idea to fix it would be to make the marines spawn in an inaccessable area, sort of like in DoD, then they jump down on the stupid little aliens . And the aliens, well ... They can spawn on top of the Hive can't they

Nancy was dropped because Onos got stuck everywhere with the new bounding boxes.

Nancy is shockingly ugly, a few of the official ns_ maps aren't up to the quality of the others. NS really raised the bar of mapping in the hl community but some of the maps like nancy and lost are so far under it's not even funny. It burns my eyes to play on these maps and so do many of the combat maps.

So there's no REAL reason why Nancy in 3.0 should be put to pasture? I don't give a f**k about how ugly it looks if the gameplay is there... (and I'm not saying it is for Nancy, I just don't know)
See, I'm looking into mapping for NS (ha! fat chance) and I was wondering about good layouts and trying to move away from the hallway - room - hallway design and try and do something unique. Nancy and a few others just seem to be slanted for one side or the other due to the design, either it be one side has no chance at all or if one side gets to a certain point the other team's loss is inevitable. I was just wondering if that was my experience or a generally accepted fact.

Well, first off, the map was never even recommended for inclusion in 1.0 by a single playtester on the team, save maybe the mapper who made it. Gameplay wasn't horrible, but it wasn't the best by any means and on top of that, the visuals were nowhere up to par with the established NS standards - poor lighting, horrid texturing, and bland appearances in general made for a glaring contrast to the other maps. The gameplay wasn't striking enough to be a saving grace in this case, and as such it was not a map that should have ever been representative of Natural Selection. It was rather awful in visuals and extremely mediocre in other areas.
It broke in 2.0 and the source was lost and it was summarily removed, a happy day for NS. Unfortunately, a bunch of people grouped together to re-make it from scratch, and now we have a new version in the 3.0 beta of a map that they really probably shouldn't have even played in the first place.
As far as your own NS ambitions, there's a good bit of flexibility in layout styles for what you want to do. If you look at the official maps, Eclipse and Veil have fairly similar layouts (this was intentional on my part, as the two are designed to be from the same location and recognizable as very similar), but other than that I believe most are fairly varied in their styles. You can go with an X, modified T, squared-off O, or even Y-shaped layout with some measure of success. I would say the biggest thing to be concerned with is even nozzle placement and checking siege distances against your landmark areas (MS, Hives, and nozzles - locking down too many of anything at once is problematic). If those fall into place within your layout and you keep good travel options open, you should do fairly well.

well, i know its a beta, but still, it seems to me it was in development long enough to weed out some of the s**t ive seen in these new combat maps.....dont get me wrong, i like the game style....all hell breaks loose....but the stuff ive seen, well, if id have posted screens of this stuff here, id have expected to have the beat s**t outta me for it, as ive seen what these hungry f**kers do to a sheit map....if ya need a list, ill accomodate....

Well I finally got steam to work with the help of KornFlakes, played NS3 for about... 20 seconds as I have exams to 'revise' for. It was combat mode and as soon as I spawnedI got easten but I imagine that was because marines were about to lose so I'm not making any judgements based on that experience

I have to say my favorite addition is "Focus", which replaces the worthless Pheromones alien upgrade. With Focus, a skulk can take out an HA with a bite or two. Fades can take out some HA's with one swipe! Of course you have to time your attacks better, but it really does empower all the alien classes in my opinion.
