Just heard on the radio that scientists disproved love at first site, and claim that the emotion "love" is something that takes on average 12 months or more to form (less in some people, but no where near instant). They also 'claim' that love for a partner is only obtainable through physical and mental connections via intimacy and other commitment.

Now I know some people are probably thinking that Catholics can't then actually fall in love until after marriage, which is interesting.

Another interesting thing I read recently was that the emotion "lust" actually has an expirary date- 2 years.

What are you guys views on the subject (mainly the older people who know of the subject).

Aye, my last one: we broke up after ONE year. Funny thing is, we were a Christian couple and so there really wasn't any use for lust to begin with. Sometimes I just dont fit in this world. :leper:

I'm so oblivious to love and dating that, to me, you all seem to be
speaking in martian. All the girls I know either a) look good but are
morons b) are smart but transcontinental-fat or c) look ugly and are morons. So this thread will prove interesting.

Yeah, I think people seem to jump to the conclusion that "its love" just because they are infatuated with somebody. I dunno if I've ever been in love, probably not, probably just different levels of infatuations I guess.

I know what you mean. I think I was probably just infatuated with this girl at forst. But then I got sick of her crap. the A B C is a bit different in america.
  • A. They look good but are slutty, b*tchy and think they are entitled to everything.
  • B. They are transcontinental-fat, and are slutty (because the men are so desparate) b*tchy and think they are entitled to everything (including everyone else's lunch)
  • C. They're pregnant all the time, b*tchy and think they are entitled to everything.

I think that lust can turn into love, you may 'lust' after someone
because you find them attractive or you may find them a nice person if
you've only just met them, that could evolve into love.

Only once have I felt (something vaguely related to) love (the non-biological type,
you know, the one induced by the head on your shoulders  ). We were very
very good friends but sigh I decided it was for the best not to get
too attached to this girl since she was, after all, japanese and here only
for 4 months. We keep in touch though.

I think you're right, $loth. Most people these days get thier first impression by how a person looks. I know a lot of times I do that. Then I think of how cool I would look with a hot girl like that and then I ask her out on the off chance she's not a B.

I haven't reached the point in my life where personality can completely override looks (I don't know if I ever will) so usually I just try to hang around a girl I find attractive and if it turns out she's smart and fun to be around then perfect. In otherwords, I agree, it has to start with attraction first, before anything else can develop.

Yeah, in the olden days, people did nto move so much and many times a boy and girl would know eachother thier whole lives and would know who the person was inside as well as just what they look like. So by the time they are ready to start relationships, they know who they like and who they don't. So I think looks were not as important at one time as they are now. Now that everyone moves so often, the first impressions during dating age comes from looks instead of how you knew them to be before.

This is the way things work at the russian community at the church I go to. They all grew up together so they KNOW already who they like and they get married rEALLY early..

I think love at first sight exists. Maybe in our subcounscious, that person who seems just perfect, actually reminds us of one or more persons we loved all our lives: often a man falls i love with a woman remnding him of his mother (Oedipus complex)...

Or maybe it's just an irrational feeling: western science still has to discover the remaining unkown 85% part of the brain, before it attempts to explain love, instinct, death, etc... Maybe the chinese Yin/Yang theories are more likely to explain it, but then again, acupuncture itself is still a mystery in terms of our "rational" science...

Conclusion: Falling in love is not likely to be scientifically programmed in the near future (fortunately ...or unfortunately  )

how could you truely test this i mean seriously

is this another one of those scientific "conclusions" that are left as true because we have no known way to prove it wrong

i'm not saying that i don't agree partially

but how can you come to a conclusion that things like this are dated?

what about the belief that love is a commitment and benevolent concern between two people! Commitment technically could occur instantly , if both parties willing..

silly science .. and thinking that LUST = love.... when will humans learn

lust is related to love .. but not neccessarily attached at all..you can lust without love and you can love without lust..

lastly Intimacy is never required for love, just a common falicy

Lust is related to penises, actually. It's a common "phallusy" that it's related to love at all.

Digging up thread 'cus I was away.

Nickelplate said about how people knew each other for thier whole lives. Do you think that our now fast pace lives are making us make rash decisions without too much time to think, or at all, think. Kinda relates to technology, which nowadays does most of the thinking for us.

Calculators work out our equations so we don't have to think, mobile phones make us more irratic in our behavoir because we don't organise things in advance and stick to what we say, maybe some invention will love for us in the future?

'Tis an interesting topic to debate, especially when pondering previous relationships/encounters and what went right/wrong. Also, why is it that Catholics (of the certain kind) don't have sex until marriage? Whats the underlying reason for it?

Lust having an expirary date of 2 years? I doubt that, and a 15 year old would know

As far as the love at first sight goes: Well, yes and no. I
agree that you can fall in love with someone after being with them less
than an hour, but the other person would have to be pretty freagin'
spectactular for me to fall in love with them instantly.

<span style="color: black;">Or maybe they would just be using a love spell. Figures

edit: Myrks question about Catholics
not having sex until marriage: To sum up: religion.
Remember that certain religions have their own "10 commandments" so to
speak, and one of the Catholic 10 Commandments is "Thou Shall Not
Commit Adultery" though most people dont do a very good job obeying
that one :/
