The lack of LoTR or Harry Potter in December, and nothing to take their place, is killing me. I was considering seeing Eragon, but the reviews and word of mouth are so atrocious I don't want to waste the time.

What the hell happened to the film industry? I remember things being better quality when I was a kid, and actually enjoying going to the movies regularly. Now 95% of it is utter crap, and I go the the theater maybe once ever two months. I'm considering seeing Casino Royale for the third time, because seeing it again would be better than seeing anything else available.

It'll change again in a year or so. It sways back and forth. You'll have a few steady years of decent movies, then you'll have a lot of stupid ones. Hollywood's stupid like that.. which is why Indie movies can be great.

Anyways, most of the movies that are out now are remakes... and the original ideas that do get through are pretty stupid ideas for a film.

You might wanna try and hunt down a cinema showing Pan's Labyrinth - from what I hear its pretty god damn brilliant. Sadly any time I've tried to go to the cinema lately it hasn't been showing

Good Movies that came/comes out this month:

Deja Vu: Geeky Time Travel Movie with guns and violence. Tony Scott has also abandoned his shaky cam habits seen in Domino and Man on Fire.

The Fountain: Questions Life, Death, and the existence of the human soul. And Hugh Jackman is great in it. Though ... he's about the only person in it in a manner of speaking.

Apocalypto: A beautiful chase movie from a seemingly anti-semitic

Children of Men: Comes out tomorrow, but looks fantastic, the not so distant future and "our" (It's london in the book and film, I think) poor government forces our species into extinction. It's directed by Alfonso Cuar?n (Directed Prisoner of Azkaban).

Blood Diamond: Edward Zwick (Glory, Last Samurai, Seige) directed with a Leonardo DeCaprio "Departed" level of performance, there's no losing out with this one. However, I hear it's incredibly violent and could be rather depressing

Pan's Labyrinth: Guiermo Del Toro's last in the "in essence" horror Trillogy. He is one of the best directors around, in my opinion, he knows, hands down, how to construct a film that makes you want to see movies (Blade 2, Hellboy, Chronos, The Devil's Backbone, etc)

The Good Shepard: Stellar performances all around, though it is a bit of a paranoia movie and you'll probably feel like crap at the end.

The epic ones are Apocalypto and Pan's Labyrinth. The only problem is, PL is in limited release.

Personally, I'd rather they never make another Nintendo property into a live action movie ... do you remember Mario Bros.!?
Blame it on Microsoft, God does.

Casino Royale was good.
Children of Men was ok.

...

I wouldn't really say there are less "good" movies, just less big-budget-blockbusters like Harry Potter or LOTR.
