Read out loud the colour of the word, NOT the word itself. Make sure you have a stop watch to time yourself, and post your time when done, try to get a low time. If you make a mistake than you have to restart, don't cheat, thats just a ruin. When where all done, we can work out an average and some other statistics and compare yourself to the other members.

green, red, blue, blue, green, yellow, blue, red, yellow, blue, red, red, blue, green, red, yellow, green, red, yellow, red, blue, yellow.

Now that was an easy one, the more colours you introduce and the less variety of words you have, the harder it gets.

If you have any other cool things to trick the mind, hypnatise you, make you dizzy, even cool magic tricks than post them here.

Careful, the spiders gonna jump outta the screen.

And this is a good one, stare at the dead centre of the crosshair, do not get distracted, keep your eyes there and the coloured dots will disappear.

2) Rest your hand on the desk

3) Open the application and watch the centre for 30 seaconds

While this could be considered pushing the limits of acceptable topics, all of those are certainly cool. I'm not going to download spooky.exe, though.

It's especially fun if you know how one or more of them work.

I don't get the first one. Different colored text doesn't change the words on the screen. It's not like this text color is gonna make you call 'black' white when you read it aloud.

You're supposed to do it the other way around, read out the color of the word and not the word itself. Then it gets a bit trickier.

Cool stuff btw. I downloaded spooky.exe and it seemed fine, but I have not anti-virus software so I cannot be sure.

The picture with the pink dots, they don't disappear when I look at them, instead I see a greenish dot filling the empty space that's moving around.

Thankyou.

You have to keep your eye on the crosshair at all times. If you look away even for a millisecond, even if you move your eye .00001 of a millimeter , it will reset, just stair at the crosshair, pretend the dots aren't there, than they will disapperar. Takes about 10 seconds for me.

edit: I have a firewall and I scanned it after I downloaded it, its safe, take my word for it. I still have it on my computer.

edit (2): I have a great Idea. Does anyone have 3D glases (one red lens one blue lens). I ask this because I have a program that converts normal images into 3D images and you guys can submit me images and I'll convert them into 3D and we can all veiw them. But you need the 3D glases, so I ask, Does anyone have a pair of 3D glases?

Keep looking, the green dot will start to make the purple dots disappear. Never saw this one , and it's really cool actually. Wonder how it works

The one with the pink dots is pretty cool. :biggrin:

I also tried spooky.exe and it was interesting; gave me motion sickness.
I also showed it to my cat, and it said "meow".

Square A is the same color as square B. I swear I didn't believe it until opening the image in paint and moving part of one square next to the other.

</DIV></DIV>

Your eyes try to get used to the color of the dots by producing fake, negative images, for example, the dots are actually colored magenta, and magenta's negative is green. The magenta from the dots sends a stronger impulse to the eyes' red and blue "sensors". Your brain then tries to counter this effect by sending a fake green signal to your eyes, so eventually you start seeing gray. The dissapearing dots look like green dots because the adaptive process of actually making the fake signals takes a while to change.
What I thought was cool was the spider one.

Edit: Just tried the spooky.exe. THAT is awesome!

I like the vanishing dots!

spooky.exe is OK to my virus scanner as well and it's a pretty cool effect. Like eating shrooms or something. If you don't want to d/l a program called "spooky.exe" (which I fully understand), you can get the same effect on this site.

It's a pretty cool collection of optical illusions, most of them involving motion and it also explains how they work. The full index can be found here.

BlisTer, yeah, I noticed it too when I looked a bit longer. Pretty freaky that the real dots disappear while the non existing green one stays visible.

aaron, it does appear 3D, so it seems to be working. I'm not sure exactly how these images are constructed, but I the two different colors (red and green) are supposed to be of the same picture from slightly different angles. I guess your program only produces images where both colors are from the same angle, exact same picture. Also, I think the distance between, say for example the green and red parts of the gun should be bigger than the distance between something far away, for example a tree in the background or the clouds in this picture. I guess there's no way for the program to sense what these differences. What's the name of the program?

Andrei, really freaky. The bizarre thing is that when I moved the 'B' square up next to the 'A' square it appeared to become darker while I dragged it.

@quanta
The good ol' opponent process theory, good stuff. The colors cancel each other out, and your brain fills in the missing info with peripheral vision.

@Aaron
I wish I had some 3D glasses right now, I guess I'll have to go to Sweden and hunt down Otzman.

Does anyone else have the 3D glasses?

Okay, just go down to a craft store pick up two sheets of colored cellophane one primary red and one primary blue. Figure the rest out. In any case that isn't real 3D.

They work well for changing the color of a light too.

I have a few 3D images but they're NSFW. Nothing racy, but they're sort of in the "artistic boobies" category. It's a very cool effect though and you don't need coloured gels to see it. I also had a few other very, very cool illusions/eye tricks that I'll have to track down. The ones you've shown are the common ones, but I saw a few that even I'd never seen and I always look out for stuff like this.

[edit] Here's one of them, this one is quite nuts.

That's a really nice example of how you brain fills in peripheral vision.

Can't you also use those really expensive glasses that hook into your video card (or used to) that flicker at high frequencies to see the 3D image?

Yea, those glasses have been popular for some time. I tried them once at a friend's PC and the effect worked fine... they just gave me major headaches.

@Gorbachev: That's a kick-ass effect. Very impressive.
