My bud says someone(s) hacked into the Steam Network and it's down? He said that the Steam website is also down (which I could not reach either...) Is this just me and him?

I can't play halflife because steam says it can't reach the steam network and shuts down. nor can I reach valve's steam website. I just got home from work and wanted to play some Action HL to relax. I am... pissed.

if it was hacked, that's funny, and Valve are idiots.

if it wasn't hacked, there's no excuse for this pathetic service, and Valve are idiots.

Either way, we know one thing for sure!

Steam wasn't hacked. Valve is actually "down". Power outage or something; straight out of the horse's mouth (autolycus  )

Naw, the power is really out here in redmond/kirkland. Or at least it was yesterday and the day before due to storms. I got it back last night, dunno about Valve.

that is still not an excuse for Half-Life to be unplayable... rather, it suggests how vulnerable and unreliable Steam is

The first release was teh horror, but nowadays steam is running OK on my computer. Still nothing compared with the WON-system, but at least I can play now, instead of watching those progress bars go up and down.

Not being able to play is unacceptable no matter how you look at it. Also, if it was a power issue, backup generators and failover systems are the core of any well planned network infrastructure. If they are at the mercy of any storm what comes through I will question my decision to continue to support this game.

Even with broad band Steam is sucky. Besides, 1Gb downloads are just not a good idea. They should of just released a 1.6 full installer and updated the server list a bit, then HL multiplayer would be nearing perfection. Maybe.

There is always the possibility that they do have a backup generator but that it also happened to fail at the same time. It's not likely but it is possible... people seem quick to have a go at valve

Valve is quickly becoming the next microsoft in terms of hating it for any half assed reason you get. It's not like they purposefully had a power outage. Oh no you couldn't play HL for a few hours, big deal. Go out, socialise, watch some TV or something.

It's not the end of the world.

I dont get steam anyways. I mean, I dont even use it but I dont see the point of it. Make everybody do a 650meg download and change the whole system...

And I agree with the valve is becomming microsoft comment. Aparently public interest isnt their main concern anymore...

Steam is going to be mandatory and part of Half-Life 2, whether you like it or not. It's way too late to go back for Valve, they've committed way too many resources to Steam already (all the servers, the network, etc.) Might as well convert now and get used to it.

I have to say, I'm enjoying Steam. The "point" is to automatically deliver mods and patches without you having to end up waiting in Fileplanet for a few hours or whatever. They're really designing for the public interest.

Most people wouldn't mind Steam so much if it would stop bloody updating itself all the time.

I suppose most non broadband people could somehow manage to get the whole 700+MB download. But as soon as you install it, it starts to update itself. Don't see the point in it myself... How tough can it be to host an "updated" version for download?

Its cause the lamers want to make us wait in line at Fileplanet and Gamespy and 3D downloads. By the way, anybody find that a 5 minute line in 3D downloads lasts over an hour for some reason?

Do what I always do when theres a line for File Planet...Copy the file name [steam_install.exe] and google it. You'll be surprised how many index folders you'll get with the file...No lines  .

or you can look for it on http://www.filemirrors.com of course.

we used to use 3dDownloads for the Action HL Map Depot but half the time people couldn't even get the maps. Hell, the little window won't even refresh for me so I can't even wait in line. I had to use my ftp access to download the maps so I could upload them to the new webhost

Seems to me that whether it's Steam or a patch it's still the same bandwidth. If Valve wants to save us the trouble of fileplanet they could just host the patches themselves at the same bandwidth cost as steam- less in fact since other places would mirror it for them. Clearly they want us to be totally their bitches, though.

but on the other hand.

instead of waiting in queues for hours on end once every few months when a big feck-off patch is ready, we now get lots of little fixes that are automatically installed one at a time as they are made ready, and in only a few seconds. so unless valve need to make some major changes to steam, i don't really see us having to go through any more 600meg+ downloads again

here's hoping anyway

That's right, Mustang ... when you run a system where thousands of gamers all over the world are depending on (especially when CS:CZ or HL2 are going to be released ... notice the sarcasm.) you just can't run this without backup generators or anything.

If they're not capable of supporting steam Gamers now (which is still not the amount of people that played on WON), it sure doesn't look like it.

True. I presume they'll have a bunch more servers at that point, but it probably won't be near enough. It's a matter of waiting (and possibly lots more waiting) and seeing I guess.

What about all the nice new graphics in HL2? That'll mena realistically your going to need a very fast broadband connection to play the next wave of games online. (Doom 3 December the 1st!) probably like 1Mbit+

Yep!

Maybe the AI and the physics might be more complicated though and force more data to be sent. But Steam is already a broadband platform, which means HL2 will be. Sorry.
