hi,

i've some ideas for useful tutorials, some things that i find a little difficult to create:
  • create caves and tunnels (also with a way to use one or more rock texture in them without having a bad repeated feeling)
  • import simple models from a 3d editor (i dont know if there's a converter, but would be useful because you can model a cave more easily or import a statue and optimize for rendering because in the bsp, you can generate boxed or sphere texture coordinates, etc)
  • general ideas to choose texture, simple tricks for generating different flavours of the same texture, etc.
What do you think about these? i'd like to build more complex world

carving caves and tunnels is not the way to go..squirrley s**t happens when you use this tool in that manner...i suggest either the arch tool, or build yer own blocks and vertex manipulate till yer fingers hurt...

modeling....well, its an animal unto itself....do you want to know the basics?...are you an advanced model builder?...depending on the prog you use, most have to be converted to a mdl file...easily done in a prog such as milkshape, which has a plethera of import/export options....but its not free....20/ 25 bucks...

ah yes....just what the world needs, more complexity... if i may be so bold, if you post your questions individually, then youll not only get the answers you need, but youll increase the data base for the next poor shlub that wants an answer....

the texture end of your question is fairly easily doable...simply load it into an editor, and have at it... experiment...i trust if you need more than that for an answer, then you need to learn whatever graphics prog yer using....hope that didnt sound harsh, it wasnt meant to be... :heee:

Nobody said anything about carving Brass!

For making comple caves just adapt this tutorial and use the same method on the walls and roof of the cave.

Umm, I was reading this as him asking if he himself should write said tutorials. i.e. whether we would find it usefull.

When I make caves, I jut put in some blocs and vertex manip them like in ReNo's tut there. But for the walls, I use the cliff tut. Only ceilling I use the triangles.

If he doesn't know how to do them, how would he write a tutorial on them?
What do you think about these? i'd like to build more complex world
This also suggests that he want's someone else to write the tutorials.

i just took it by the topic title, that this was a thread about ideas for new tuts.

there's a lot of posts in other threads, where people ask how to do things that already have tuts. so hows about someone writing a tut on how to find tuts. i reckon it would be a winner.

if anyone can find it, that is.

 <---/me laughs at own joke

I submitted a tutorial about my tube lighting a while back, but it was rejected. To "Quakish" apparently. Wait till you see Cartoon Labority in all its glory, is all I say...

like a triangular border with textured lights. It looks sweet on my level. So perhaps its just a custom thing.

Ahh, no offense, but i can see why the tut was rejected. that's pretty simple, although it is a good application of texture lights. I think if you want to write a tut that includes that Idea it would have to be broader, incorporating many different styles of lighting as a nudge to those who are creativly blocked.

It's an awful lot of lights too, you'd be better off making the sloped skirt out of some other material and putting lights in every couple of metres or so. You'd get nice shadows that way.

Indeedy, variation is the spice of life, having too many adjacent lights gets boring. Thats not to say it doesn't look good in your map of course, as beauty is in the eye of the beholder

I suppose I could write a short, quick tutorial on getting models into Half-Life. But it'll be limited to static-prop type things.
