I was just looking at the time zone stats, and was suprised to see how many people there are in the -12 GMT group. Is this maybe people who didn't bother to specify a time zone? I thought -12 was somewhere in the western pacific ocean.

I think it was because the timezone dropdown on the register page was b0rked and people are actually in the -7 region :/

if you tell me which one is actually Eastern time I'll set it. I don't know/care what that is in GMT, so I didn't bother

I think the board autocompensates for Daylight Savings Time, at least I don't remember having to fiddle with it.
I'm not sure why you are mentioning Germany since the G stands for Greenwich, a city in England from whence the standardization comes (prime meridian and whatnot). And East Coast is definatley five hours behind Greenwich.

Besides, since we have daylight savings time, and GMT doesn't actually have it, we would be one hour up and so it would be -4 instead of -5, not the other direction (-6)

the time zone (+ or - GMT) has nothing to do with DLST. you use the non daylight time to determain the zone.
I think
Oh, and if you want to know what time zone you are in, just double click your clock in windows and hit the time zone tab.

funny thing, today in geography we learned that even though many European countries lie within the same timezone technically as Great Britian/UK they operate together in the +1 timezone. Something like Portugal to around the Slovak countries.
