Will there ever be a Steam update for Hammer? I mean with Windows 7 and all, you would think there would be some sorta update. Do you think our tools will get more functions and options in the near to distant future.

Windows 7 is actually more backwards compatible than Vista, I can't see what they would change though to be honest

wasn't valve working on a software that would be a dev kit for any engine or something like that a few years back though?

I think so too. And im not sure if Hammer is officially supported by Vista even... Which begs the question to me: what OS IS valve using for their level designers? You would figure because of the RAM limitation in 32 bit OS's they would have their mappers on 64 bit vista or 64 bit XP to break that RAM barrier, so you would think they have made alterations to hammer to make it compatible.

I mapped for a year with Vista ultimate 64 and the only issue I came across (which I found was evident with only a few users) was the low res problem in Hammer for Orangebox games. (I've copied the fix on my site: http://genecy.net/Hammer_problem.html )

I'm now mapping on W7 Ultimate 64 and I have the same issue (with the same work-around fixing it again). Other than that, not a single issue has arose from Vista nor W7.

Well Muhnay you got your wish! Apparently the new LFD2 SDK uses a version of hammer that allows for instancing! So now you can create what are essentially the same as prefabs, only when you update the prefab itself, all instances of that prefab in your maps will ALSO update (well...when you recompile), saving you a whole boat load of hassle.

There's a little bit of info here...

http://www.l4d.com/blog/post.php?id=3286

...but it doesn't seem to make mention of the VMF instancing. I just read about that over at mapcore (http://forums.mapcore.net/viewtopic.php?f=23&t=14785).
