Greetings SnarkPit PEEPS!

To help build interest and get some of you back into the mapping scene, I am offering this contest. Build this scene ( expand on it if you will ) to the best copy of this image that you can. Make it for Left For Dead 1 or 2, Half Life Death Match or CounterStrike Source and the best version will win a gift Card to NEW-EGG, amount to still be determined, but no less than 20 dollars and no more than 2000 dollars.

http://windows7news.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/12/4abandoned_mall_by_raybender.jpg

Thats the challenge. ENJOY!

Winners will need to disclose some personal info, email address and a name they wish the card to be under. The card will be delivered by e-mail.
I'll probably try this out! And even if I don't win, it will still be a good fun I guess :D

Before what date should my entry be posted?
And should we post screenshots only, or the whole map?

Edit: maybe you should dis-allow us to use custom models. Since I can't model, and then it wouldn't really be a map contest anymore but also a model contest.

Hey! -Pretty nice competition you've posted! Short, sweet and to the point. How long do mappers have in order to submit their work?

-Also, would you like a front page post about it? (if you want to make the little banner for it, let me know. The dimensions are: 400 x 130px)

I would totally join if I had more time. -Also, you should definitely let the author of that art know about this, I'm sure he'd find it interesting.

This is cool. :hee:

What would be a good amount of time? A month 2 months?

Should we make the rules have the map playable?

Riven I will make something up now for the front page, I am not sure how to contact them, maybe though the Deviant Art page?

here ya go Riven!

I think it would be appropriate if you contacted the artist and notified him of the competition. I think he'd be interested in seeing what comes out of it. I think I'd enjoy the ego boost myself.

Why we didn't take advantage of the last comp i don't know but, WE SHOULD USE THIS COMPETITION AS A OPPORTUNITY TO ADVERTISE THE PIT!! This comp should be posted on Mapcore, Inoplers, twhl, ect. We need new blood. People who still have interest in commenting on peoples work. We had a guy post a L4D survival map a month ago. It was a good looking map. Only one person left a comment (ty Riven). I found it particularly disappointing because this guy has done, what I'm assuming is, a considerable amount of work on Black Mesa. http://www.rabidmnky.com/

Weren't we supposed have a grand reopening of the Pit after the update anyway? What ever happened to that?

And im in by the way.

EDIT: Oops! I'v beeb up for about 30 hours now and im missing who chunks of text when reading. my bad.

Oh I'd LOVE to do something like this, but I'm not skilled enough at the moment. I just recently started mapping again, and I'm relearning everything. Also I start University in March so it's going to be a bit too tough to learn everything I need about mapping in time. I look forward to what the community comes up with though, and I know it's going to kick butt.

Yes Aaron that what I meant thanks for pointing that out.

Riven, is there a donate to the PIT option like a pay pal to help with the cost, to have a PIT server or anything of that nature?

The reason I ask is because it would be nice to have a way to help with the pit, for those who want too.. and it would be an option for things like this mapping challenge... I or/and others could donate to the pit to get the funds up to a more enticing amount, then the PIT could purchase the gift card from where ever the host of the contest likes or it can be decided by the contestants.

let me know what you think.

Yes, the donate button is at the bottom of EVERY page on the Pit, and it would all lead to Gwil's account, as he is the one paying for the site. If there is any fund raising you'd like to coordinate, it would be with and through him.

Also, if you wish to advertise such a fund-raiser, I have no problem stickying a thread for you or posting a front page news item you would construct (BB code enabled). Send me the post in a pm within the 'code' tags and I'll pass it along to the front page.

-OR- (laundry list item detected...)
If we had a way so that users could submit front page news items to be approved and posted. -(or a way to show in the header: "Posted by ____" but not an admin's name). I know we have user journals, but most folks won't ever press the journal button and that content may never get seen. That's mostly for the regulars already here afaik. So, yea, I suppose I'll just leave this little request here and know that larchy is already busy with other upcoming features and that I should know when to shut-up sometimes.

Has anyone posted this comp on any other mapping sites? Riven and Aaron are not competing. Two people out and were in danger of not having any entry's... anyone else see anything wrong with that? Who is entering anyway? I'm not the only one am I?

I'm considering it, but I just started this semester's classes yesterday, so I want to make sure I don't have to much going on with that first.

I'm sad to say that it most likely won't happen because I have actually started a new map, my first in several years.

In light of expecting to invest 2 months of free time, am i expecting to much if i ask for more details? Your the only other one making a entry, so their isn't much entertainment in the competition of it and, 20$ isn't enough to motivate me alone. I'd at least like to get a copy of Bioshock 2 out of it, but i don't know what I'm getting for sure. (or the newest stalker :wcc: )
On top of that i would be disappointed if i lost, after investing more than 3 dozen hours, because i don't have the know how to create custom content. I would be pissed if i lost because my entry didn't have a coke or candy machine. Not to mention your wife is helping you. Technically that's like having 4 months to work on it. And it's worth noting you've had a passion for that pic for a long time and you probably had it all though out before the comp started. I spent the first 4 days just thinking about it and getting the scaling down. (not counting the days in between i didn't work on it for what ever reason)

Well I am not in the contest.. I am not going to run a contest and then enter it, thats like stacking the deck. There are 2 others that I have spoken with on Steam that are mapping for it. Redwood, its there in the first post, enter or not, thats up to you man, I am not twisting your arm.. and hey its 20 more bucks than you had to begin with... for what a little mapping fun? I don't see any other contest right now.

Your very good at assuming Red. Why so bitter bro? Hey don't be jealous that my wife is into the stuff I am and is willing to help me. You'll find a girl someday man, I have faith.

Arg. I remember you specifically saying you were entering and that your wife was helping you make custom content. (am i alone here??)
But!, after going through your posting history trying to find out exactly what you said i cant find any post that resembles that. Unless it was posted in the starting post and now has been edited. Maybe i dreamed reading a post where you said that... iv been doing things like that a lot lately. (Last week I actually told my friend i saw a half donkey half zebra walking down the street before i realized it was a dream...)

Ether way, I'm more interested in starting my own scavenge map iv had on the drawing board for while now. I won't be entering this time around.

I sent you a PM about it.

I just wanted to state for the record that I made an attempt at this. I didn't get past the orange mapped stage though. I tried to fit it into a weekend I had free, but the way my university is scheduled, I had too much to deal with daily. We just got through with Quarter finals and I'll get a week's break between them but the competition will already be over by the end of this weekend where I have one other video project to complete.

I might have time Sunday to work on it. I'll see if I can pump something out in a day :p

[EDIT]: Oh, and about the snarkmark rewards system, It's currently not in place yet and I don't imagine it will be until Late April or May when larchy can get back to work on it. They'll most likely be included in the next major update to the site. Stay tuned. :D

Thank you NIB.

Everyone else: You have today and Sunday to get your entry in. Riven even if you don't meet the deadline, please still submit. Would be nice to see what you came up with as well.

This Contest was all about having fun and learning new things. NIB I know you had fun and learned many new things. That makes me very happy... and you have already won so much by doing so. If there are no other entries you will be our winner by default, even though from what I have seen so far, you have a strong entry. Good Luck!

March 1st I will announce the winner.

Aaron no need to be jealous. I have no idea why you can never just say something nice without the smack in the face. I think you should apologize to NIB, and get over yourself. :stirring:

I love the front page announcement of your winning this contest. Congrats again NIB, you did a fantastic job, most importantly you learned new things and had fun doing it.

Everyone: I will have another contest soon.. so keep your eyes on the PIT for more mapping fun!

Thanks for saying that, but I'm sure Aaron didn't mean it as an offense.
Anyways, can I contact you at steam now, Muhnay? You said you will do that today for my price :)

I can't wait for the next contest and yeah, I really like the front page announcement with the bird :D

I learned lots of new things indeed, which is useful for the next contest!

Thank you Muhnay for gifting me the game I asked for (Unreal Tournament 2004) :D

It was a great contest, and it was very fun to make the map.
I don't only have a new game, but also a new survival map to play with my friends.

Yea, that screenshot looks pretty nice. Good work setting it up like the image.

I would post screenshots if I could take any. Sorry to say, but my little orange-mapped scene never made it to compile. I might work on it later though. Been meaning to get acquainted with the new L4D tools and entities. I don't believe I could make it into a fully playable map though like Nib did. -Nice work :hee:

I'm gonna just ignore muhnay's comment...

Anyway, the screenshot doesn't seem blurry anymore maybe it wasn't fully loaded last time, I thought it had something to do with snarkpit's automatic resize for larger images.

I'm liking it Nib. I'm curious about the custom content, I'd be pretty interested to see what you made for this.

Just be careful about your stairs, the one on the right looks fine but on the left, the texture looks repetitive, I'm assuming you shift + dragged them? Just make sure that after you do that you go back and vary the texture up a bit or you could turn off texture lock temporarily.

Also on the rightish, that tile texture you used on the side of the upper platform, the way it looks cut off at the bottom is kind of unnatural.

well, firstly, what the hell happened to the picture?

And thanks for these hints Aaron.
About the stairs, I only just noticed this after I uploaded it here.

Edit: Sorry was in a haste when I wrote this.

About the custom content, well, the only custom textures are the sign of the Feng Shui Shop (which is very ugly IMO)

A fast food restaurant menu (Which is much better looking than the feng shui shop)

And some other small ones.

Edit: Nevermind about the picture. Some days ago it was changed into something very random, but it seems fine now.
