I don't actually know what I want to put on a website yet, but I do want one. I was wondering what hosting companies people here use. Also if you have any ideas for what to put on a website (feel free to make joke suggestions), that would be good.

You could try http://hlgaming.com, It works reliably (normally, except once recently). Otherwise, try something like http://buildtolearn.com or maybe one of the worse things like Tripod or something (Statutory warning, Tripod can be injurious to your sanity)

http://www.oneandone.co.uk

We've been using it for http://www.elva-mod.co.uk and http://www.deadpan-studios.co.uk for about a year or so now, and its been fine for me. Got webmail for accessing your domain email addresses and of course supports POP3 too, and they register domains for quite cheap. PHP support (possibly some other languages too, though I didn't bother checking at the time) is included in most of the packages. It probably wouldn't do for high bandwidth needs but for most websites it should be fine.

Oneandone seems very expensive- ?5/month for only 5gb and 500mb space?! You can get 4 times that for the same price with an American hosted site... And fuitadnet seems quite good, although I tend not to trust websites when their images are badly compressed

Haha, most likely, we didn't shop around much, and I left the searching and organising down to my flatmate, who perhaps didnt scout out the best of deals. Considering its split between 5 of us, we are paying next to nothing each, so what we get is fine for ?1 a month per person

Oktagone are looking pretty good, and they are even thinking about starting a network in switzerland, which would be even better. Now just to think up something to put on a website

Oktagone are good when they don't decide to switch their servers off for hours at a time every other day.

DITTO!!!

cox cable internet is one of the fastest in arkansas, but its down roughly 50% of the month.. tis why i switched to SBC global ADSL.. about 1/2 the speed but tis up 99.9% of the month.

reliability is IMO much more preferable..

snarkpit is down far to frequently

Well, um, ELVA is sort of... Dormant right now.

Really thinking of switching from Oktagone to FuitadNET. Oktagone kind of just seems like a mess right now.

One thing that sucks about living in Australia is that Australian based web hosting is bloody expensive.
