Some of you may have noticed that I haven't been around for the past few days- since about Friday or so, to be exact.

I just thought that I would share my little story with all of you, just to prove to everyone once and for all that the world is, in fact, out to get me.

It all pretty much started last week, about Tuesday or so. I noticed my PC lagging just a little bit- nothing major, as outages in the ResNet (The on-campus internet service) tends to be a bit sketchy at times, and doesn't always run perfectly. No biggie, I thought. Plus, by about Wednesday or so, it had all but cleared up.

Friday rolls around, and I don't really notice anything too weird, and that night I shut my PC down before going to bed. Saturday rolled around, as it is wont to do after Friday- and I can't connect to anything outside of the local network- IE I could hop on the school webpage, connect to a computer on the network, but that was about it. Later that day, I lost all access to anything. I thought my NIC had gone bad, so I swapped the cable over to my on-board card, just to have something to join in with. I had to wait a few days to actually connect into ResNet, since they had to re-assign my IP to the new cards mac address (since you're only allowed one connection at a time). No biggie, I again thought. I heard that many of my friends had been having issues connecting to the network anyways, so I figgured I wasn't missing out on too much.

So, here's where it gets good- I get on to check the status of the mac address registration Monday afternoon, and am greeted with a page that says that my account had been revoked, due to some violation of policies, and it suggested I check my mail to find out exactly why. Being the inquisitive person I am, I cruised on over to my friends room to check my mail. Sitting in my inbox, I had a little message from the head of the ResNet department essentially telling me the following:

My IP had been the focal point of several port-scans. No big deal, you're thinking, right? Well, here's the breakdown- those packets for the port-scan were taking up a bit of bandwidth. On Tuesday, they were hogging 11% of available bandwidth for the university. Wednesay, 17%. And finally, on Saturday morning- 69%. Now, my school doesn't exactly host on a crappy connection, since we are a university hosting internet services for over 15,000 people.

Needless to say, they made my IP point to a null server, just to kick back the packets so that they wouldn't cloy up the bandwidth for everyone else. They did this after they shut down the network for the ENTIRE campus to track down the problem. It's funny, because my friends and I always say things such as "Dude, you broke the internet. You suck." But I actually did it. Thankfully, only a few people know it was actually me, so I haven't had any angry students who had to work on some term paper storming my room with rakes waiting to bash my head in.

Now, for the global conspiracy bit- It turns out that the packets were orchesrated from dozens of computers/points around the globe. They did some research, tracerouting or whatever, and discovered that all the hops did seem concurrent with the countries that they said they were originating from, so it was very unlikely that they were simply faked. I had to go in to talk with the head today, as he just wanted to know who the hell I had managed to piss off, and why this was happening to me. I had no clue, and told them so. They simply changed my IP and called it a day.

As we were talking, he basically mentioned that this level of ... whatever you want to call it ... is all but unheard of. They had something similar happen about ten years ago, but it was nowhere near the scale of this one. So, I guess it's kind of nice to break a record, or something.

Sorry this post was so long, but I figgured with enough college students/CS people here, someone might at least be interested.

Interesting, but I've got problems of my own... thankfully not network-related. :crash:

I read part of it (honesty), sounds like a bunch of crap to deal with. Atleast you still have a roof over your head. (it could be worse, I speak from experience)

I guess my monkey pictures further proved your theory of the world being against you. You have to admit you laughed atleast a little though :heee:

Maybe Netsky v.23 or whatever has been programmed to come after you, or there's been an IP 'switch' and you've got SCO's old one

Might not be you alone... At risk of looking like an idiot, this. You were probably the "chosen one" in your school/college.

Since you've been gone
Well, I feel like I've been chewing on tinfoil
Since you've been gone
It's like I've got a great big mouthful of cod liver oil
Oh well, I'm feelin' like I stuck my hand
Inside a blender and turned it on
You know, I've been in a buttload of pain
Since you've been gone
I couldn't feel any worse if you dropped
A two-ton bowling ball on my toes
It couldn't hurt any more if you shoved
A red-hot cactus up my nose
Since you've been gone
Well, it feels like I'm getting tetanus shots every day
Since you've been gone
It's like I've got an ice cream headache that won't go away
Ever since the day you left Snarkpit
I've been so miserable, my dear
I feel almost as bad as I did
When you were still here

I heard ya, my brother is in that rechid stink hole. First he goes for the war, takes part in over running bagdad comes home and gets sent back. Now he's (was) gaurding some damn dam. He was sent to feluga to back up some other marines for a bit though ATM, hopefully those basturds in "rag" will realise if they sit and shut up everyone will leave their sand box, killing will only bring more people into their country.

Good plan. Then if the US is forced to leave the problem will be solved and everything will be hunky-dory.

You think your week was bad...hrmph.

I was driving to work yesterday, all cool, with the window down (since I have no ac); when I look over and see this hot chick in the lane next to me. Well, being the Romeo that I am, I kind of lick my lips and twirl my mustache at her; at the same instant that this pigeon decides to take a huge crap, which flies right into my left eye, temporarily blinding me. I veer off, into the opposite lane, clipping the front wheel of a biker who was in a pinch trying to ride the curb; kicking his bike about 50 feet into the air. The biker rolls off onto the sidewalk, but his bike soars right over my truck, and onto the hood of car (the hot chick), in the next lane, causing her to panic slamming on the brakes, swirving into a fishtail spin against the rest of the oncoming traffic. The guy behind her, who was passively talking on his cell phone a minute before, freaks, hits his brakes, spills hot coffee all over his crotch, and screams like a banshee; scaring the s**t out of the person on the other end of the phone (also driving to work), causing them to momentarily lose control of their vehicle, and careen right into the central office of my bank, destroying their computer system and erasing all records of my bank account, and financial cushion.
