I'm working on it

I want to make the "hammer" icon a little snark too, and the window title has to change too

IDEA ! Maybe I could make a VHE without the "carve" feature !

I'm not sure you can go that far with ResHack, if that's what you're using forceflow... Nice work though.

I changed the title bar now, and I managed to remove the links to the handy almanac thingy ... they now
all point to the snarkpit. (under web resources). Expect an update soon.

Oi name the exe file "HammerSP.exe"

You don't have to replace the existing Hammer, you can have both exe's there, as long as the exe for your hammer is in the worldcraft/hammer dir, the exe can be called anything you want it.

I don't think you are allowed to distribute a modified version of any exe or dll. Not that they will probably care, but it may be a better idea to distribute a program that patches the exe people already have = not illegal.

Hm, I already thought about that.

On the page, I'm stating very clear that it is not my intention to do illegal stuff.

Yes, I could write a program that "patches" the original exe ... but
that would be very much the same as actually replacing it ...

Replacing isn't even necessary ... you can run both versions next to eachother.

Doesn't make any difference, and legally an exe patcher is fine to distribute, even if it allows something illegal. Hence all those cracks websites don't get shut down by the software compaines.

Ok, I'm writing a patcher now.

edit Ok, it's finished, I will release this tomorrow.

It "patches" the original exe file to the SP version, and also creates
a backup file called hammer_unpatched.exe, which can be run perfectly
too.

No, distribute the modified .exe and .dll. its better that way then
patching it. Also I'm sure its cool with Valve since Autolycus himself
has posted replacement files made by the community on the front page of
the VERC, for things like a spanish version, or making the entity
properties dialog bigger (3.4), etc.

Well, DON"t remove the carve tool. In fact, perfect it. Instead of it slicing 1 object up into thousands of others, have it so the 1 object that was carved, reshapes itself with the correct faces, etc, to fit around the object it was carved by.

Just a thought.

G.Ball, ResHack cannot be used for modifying the code in any way. All it does is modify the resource files the program uses to draw the windows.

You've got to be joking if you think you could re-do the carve tool. Learn to use the clip tool. There really is no purpose for carve...it's a waste, you can do better faster on your own with brushes and the clip tool.

As said on the second page, I'm not going to redo it. I'm just not able
to do that, and I don't see the use of redoing it, anyway. Clip tool
carve.
I'm just decompiling the Help file now ... I'll include some tutorials where the subject demands it.

What about making a VHE:Community edition, with plenty of tutorials and
stuff included in the help file, plus ZHLT and a few other bits and
pieces included with VHE? Autolycus has said that Valve can't include
the tools in an official release of VHE for legal reasons. Thinking
back he was probably hinting...

You should put all the tutorials on Snarkpit into the help file. That would make the help file useful for a change, and you wouldnt need to write out tutorials yourself! Its win-win

That's my idea ... therefor, I would like you all to e-mail me ZIP files containing:
  • 1 TXT file with the source of your tutorial, so it's easy for me to convert it to html.
  • All Images included in your tutorial
forceflow@pandora.be

I'll just keep the name to Snarkpit Edition, but if there's interest
from other sides too, we might get to a Community Edition. (then again,
HL2 is coming, so I'm not going to put tons of effort into a community
edition which will be used for 3 weeks  )

Yay, I released an update.

It features the complete re-styled helpfile, and some additional tweaks to the executable.

http://www.snarkpit.com/pits/forceflow/vhesnarkpit.htm

Next steps I want to take is to change the icons and include more snarkpit tutorials.

This is runnin' good

(I've already included the "setup hammer for steam" tutorial and the
"texture lighting" tutorial. Both are looking good, and converting them
to the help-file format didn't take long. Also, check out the easter egg I found while decompiling the Help-file.)

I'm going to put the snarkpit's top rated tutorials in the help-file

I'm only using the top rated (4 or more) tutorials, which I can link to several subjects in the User Guide.

For example, I'm not going to include the tutorial about metal-looking
textures for NS, because that would lead us too far. (no offense to
that superb tutorial, btw). Same goes for the "design considerations", and a lot of other tuts.

Tutorials like "how to setup Hammer for steam" are a valuable and needed addition to the help-file.
