I would like to get hold of a map that is really bad for gauss nuking.  That is, I want a map where it is very easy to kill yourself with random gauss reflection deaths.

What's the most severe case of gauss nuking you've ever found?  Come on, don't be shy    It's not a design fault in the map, so the author should not be upset!

SI_Rush, part of science and industry. Can't ever ever seem to Gauss jump in the middle area without it backfiring.

My own SI_Overfloater can get fairly nasty too.

Damn, I can't make that map run in HLDM

Why not? The only problem I could see would be texture waddage, you could just create some dummy wads and get a bunch of checkerboards at some spots...

"locker room rats" is a good one. there is a fan in the floor that always nukes you if you try to break your fa,, with tha gauss.... I'll try and get you a link.

The spawn points in si_rush are instant death in HLDM

If you gauss the highest tower in KoTC you almost inevitably get nuked.

Excellent - thanks Mazey

/me bounces up and down on tower without getting nuked

Oh, heheh, there's a slight bug in S&I that can spawn people on the opposing team's side every once in a while so mappers place team-designated trigger_hurt's in the spawns. Overfloater doesn't have this.

I should have mentioned I found it already, but thanks anyway

Also the fan-death does not appear to be related to gauss-nuking; it just happens whenever you fall back down into the fan.

I only needed one reliable test map and I have one now; thanks for your help everyone.

What exactly causes gauss nuking?  Some maps are notoriously bad (i.e. shoot your feet, die immediately), others have no problems whatever.

I believe gauss nuking happens when the brush you are shooting against is a certin thickness. The thicker it is the less you can Gauss jump. You may of course correct me if I am wrong.

Bad maths causes gauss nuking

There's an algorithm that calculates how the gauss beam reflects.  It's only supposed to reflect at shallow angles, and not at all if fired directly at a wall.  But the vector calculation falls down at certain angles.

I can't code well enough to read exactly what's happening, but my guess is that it's a trig error - perhaps the tangent is calculated at 90 degrees, which would lead to problems.

Alltho i havent read more than the first post (the request for maps wich have complex faces causing the gauss to reflect and splat you.)

I got 2 maps for you , Three_kings and Expiry_final wich is an remake of three_kings, you can find the map exoiry_final in my profile :dorky:

if anyone is looking for further answers about why the gauss splats you i suggest you read this thread : http://www.snarkpit.com/forums.php?forum=3&topic=129

  Enjoy the splattering
