My hammer keeps crashing when I load it. I haven't done anything
special to it lately, so I'm not sure what's causing the crash. I've
already tried a reinstall but that also didn't help.

So any help is welcome.

All I can suggest is take a look at the thread directly below which was
about the same problem, hope the suggestions in there can help.

You can try re-installing VHE too. Its not like there is a lot to
loose by unistalling, it preserves your maps and prefabs.

On the topic of a gay VHE, mine cant maximize proprelly for some
reason. There is always a little space left on the top of the
screen. Its not a problem, its just annoying.

He has already tried reinstalling Wild, how about reading the post in future?

As for your problem. it happens to loads of folk Wild, me included. It
doesn't happen EVERY time though - when it happens just close it, and
reopen. Repeat until it eventually sits at the top of the screen.
Normally doesn't take more than 4 or 5 tries for me.

Hey I did read his post  Im just stupid.

Thanks ReNo, will try that. Perhaps the VHE dev team should
address that problem though lol. If ever they release something
other than a 3.5beta

Perhapse your video drivers are screwed up and it causes hammer to crash when it tries to render the 3D screen, but I cant see how it could effect you since it crashes right away  .

And as for the re-install idea: get rid of everything first (eg: delete the valve/hammer folder, then install hammer 3.4), just make sure you back-up your map.

hammer is extremely stable, but over sensitive to driver clashes.. my suggestion for what its worth..

1) un-install hammer.
2) run regclean
3) run spybot
4) reinstall hammer.

i am betting, that assuming hammer worked before, it will work again.

There is a small chance that the map itself is causing the problem, and its not opening due to something you added. Do you have a backup verison of an older copy? Make sure you can open other .rmf's / .map's

Download the 3.5 patch again from a different site then when you downloaded it before. The executable could be corrupted.

Also, does Windows give an error message, or does Hammer just close and that's that?

Why would it be corrupt? I mean, I used it before. Vhe just crashes with every version.

Windows does give me an error message, but that's it. I could capture a
shot and paste it, but it's dutch, so that won't do any good.

It would help, there are dutch speakers here, and just the way the message looks will prolly give us all an idea.

You could also tell us what the main error says ...

Secondly, executable files can easily be corrupted, hacked, and overloaded. For all I know some virus chose that exe to use as a way to get to OS memory. That could be causing a Segmentation and thus killing the program. Or, maybe, there's a bug in Hammer where valve didn't re-assign a pointer, who knows?

All I'm saying is something sounds corrupted. If it's a "This application needed to be terminated sorry for the inconvenience" error, then it's probably a ram issue. However, it could be something wrong with Windows. Or a specific registry entry.

Telling us what the error message says would help, at least more then going "IT CRASHES IT CRASHES, HELP HELP HELP"

You might have some .wad issues...I had something similar where even if I re-installed the old settings hung around. Try moving or altering the folder name where your wads are and opening Hammer.

I used have this problem alot, as anyone will tell you! (TealSlut)

I fixed it by reformatting my computer

You probably wont want to do as I had my regrets!

Try re-installing half-life, this worked for me once. You may have problems such as hammer can't access your Ram or summut, I had that too!

Good Luck!

Wait, what are you talking about? An english version of hammer? There
only is an english version. And if you're talking about windows itself,
I only have the dutch version. And I don't see a reason to install the
english version of windows even if I had it.

The error report is dutch because my windows is dutch.

Ok, so, if it is doing this EVERY time you open Hammer, without Hammer loading ... or anything. Then it is corrupted (That error means the program is accessing system memory, it's the equivilent to a UNIX segmentation fault.).

That's about the best answer I could give. If it isn't that, then you've got something else affecting that executable file. In which case, scan your computer several times. Eliminate every threat that comes up. Check for Spyware.

He's saying hammer is corrupted - run some good checks on spyware/anti
virus, possibly delete any reg keys relating to hammer and try
reinstalling it.

install it to a different folder as well.. if it still crashes after
fresh installs and you dont have viruses/spyware, do a complete system
format.. sometimes it's the only way.

everyone else:

Jezpuh is right, this isn't a case of needing an english translation..
that's just the error box we ALL SEE on windows xp, except in a
different language

I already ran virus scans, spyware scans, regclean, renamed my wad folders, reinstalled it in a different folder.

There is this one ram check program which I'll run tonight. Because it's obviously my memory which is screwing it up.

Are any other programs behaving the same way? I think this might be a problem with your machine. Assuming you've done everything mentioned in this thread, of course.

Neither.

It just fits me particularly well

edit: I will say also, I would use the word myself in conversation -
and without disrespect, I think your choice of words is relevant to the
"intelligence" of your peers. Certain peers in my social circle would
whole heartedly latch onto my implications and whatnot if I used a word
such as pompous, others would look blankly ahead with that glazed "I
don't understand what he just said" look in their eyes...

edit edit: and yes, I do waffle and use a large and extensive
vocabulary in everday speech.. more signs of my pompousness, perhaps

Okay, so, did you download a new copy of hammer NOT from where you downloaded it before?

Did you clean out Hammer (including the registry) and install the new copy; continue to get the same issue?

If not, here are the steps of what you need to do:

1. Uninstall Hammer
2. Clean Registry of Hammer Listings
3. Download NEW copy of Hammer from a different site
4. Preferably restart, since Windows is a bitch and has no effective registry refresh function.
5. Install NEW copy of Hammer.

Do all of that, then come back with the results.
Also, I didn't say the problem was your RAM. I said that Hammer is accessing areas of memory it doesn't have rights to access.

If Hammer is the only program acting this way, the problem is Hammer.

There are key differences in our posts.

You say to use a program to go through a delete hammer entries. I say to do it manually (through another program). I also tell him to aquire a new copy of the installation.

Actually, the problem could very well be a corrupted installation file. I suggested everything else since it's best to not take chances and cover every corner ... and I never marked any of my stuff as answers, because usually, even if I'm right, my answer gets marked wrong because the person didn't do what I told them.

Well, blue isn't that great either ... especially in smilies:

i feel you may be right, but.. i hold that its more likely its a conflict of drivers/programs.

hammer doesn't just quit.. its very stable. something he installed, or a place he visited online recently is the cause.

No, I've worked with hammer for almost 2 years now, it has always
worked. 2 months ago I installed 3.5. Just a week ago it wouldn't start
anymore.

But anyway, I get the feeling this regclean program isn't really
cleaning the registery files, so would it be save to just delete
everything under HKEY_CURRENT_USER > Software > Valve > Valve
Hammer Editor?

Also, why would the file from the location I've downloaded it from be
corrupt? I mean, I've used it before, didn't I? For almost 2 years. I
downloaded it from verc collective, so if that file was corrupt, why am
I the only person with a corrupt file?

regclean is almost to powerful, but if you doubt its ability, i am sure another exists to do the job. BTW which version you using, the very last one is best. (4.3)

in any even, you have gotten just about all the advice there is, assuming you have not accidentally omitted something..

Well, I thought your issue was you installed hammer and it never worked, sorry.

I would imagine, since you're using 3.5 and after a few weeks it stops working properly, that either, there's something wrong with the hammer executable (in which case, just rename it and place back the old 3.4 one and see if it works)

Otherwise, there's a billion different things that could be happening.

sadly, we have given you all the advice we can, only you know the content of your PC.. something you have done, prior to it stopping caused it to bork..

if you did, everything i said, it should work now..

the only final piece of advice i can give is, find alternate video drivers, some drivers caused hammer to stop functioning.. try www.omegacorner.com
