now, with the onset of HL2 there is going to be a s**tload of older, but still great parts lying around..
i call on each of you to post your spare parts, AND a price if you need to have one, and allow your fellow members to upgrade at a reasonable price .
for some of us, upgrading is a chore..
all parts.. from MOBO's to RAM..
list them, and share..
i am sure you guys can work out the postage..
THIS IDEA CAN WORK FOR USA RESIDENTS AS WELL!

i think most of the UK folks will probably get christmas gifts from mums and dads, sadly, so the situation is kind of moot.
all my spare parts coming from this machine are reserved already as well

if its like around here, people hoard their older parts with some scheme of making a bundle off them, but all they do is end up with a drawer, or closet full of junk.
i don't know how many times i heard "But i paid 1,200 bucks for that thing in there" and all i can say is "but its 4 years old" and shake my head as they close the door again..
i can never convince them that PC's don't appreciate very often

i was hoping, the people with more money than good sense, would make up for it in this thread :heee:
i have seen some monster PIV's and AMD64's listed.. right here this week.. those members might have some spare smaller PIV's and AMD stuff ..
sell it if you must, but offer it to the pit members first.. afterall, its not top dollar your after, or more likely gonna get i meant

I'm afraid I've got plans for my spare parts (possibly for routing like
jeff, possibly for networked compiles), and the only parts I really
wouldn't need would be a P2 300 with 256mb of SDRAM. My parents have
upgraded recently and have a spare Duron 800 with 512mb of DDR I think,
but I doubt they would want to get rid of it as they like the idea of
having a spare. Not much of a gaming rig anyway I guess
Nice idea, but I'm not too sure there will be too much stuff going around.

I went from a 566 which is now being used for something else, to what I have now. I do have a TNT 16 meg spare, but since that's about the slowest AGP card you can get, I can't see anybody wanting to upgrade to a TNT.

I gave my old crap(pier) computer to my older brother. Expert in computers that he is, my brother "removed the battery to erase the memory and other things" and for some reason everything seems to be dead now. Moral of the story...I didn't need it anyway, HE can dump it.
Anyways, considering I'm using a god aweful Windows98 64mb RAM cardboard edition computer, it would be useless to anyone this side of the third world. I won't be upgrading I'll be buying a whole new one, since even the monitor is screwy (it flickers pink 24/7 so im guessing its had its day). Anyone know of any UK(NI) charities, schools that could put it to good use? It IS a damn shame, when people throw bits of their computers when something faster comes along (which is every week) and Orpheus is definatley on to something.

i've been wondering, whats with this new type of super PCI video slot the newest boards seem to be coming out with?
i can't see any PCI slot working as good as an AGP.. no matter how fast.
has anyone heard about them yet?

PCI express has a far higher bandwidth than AGP. It's a new technology. It's no faster right now, because no graphics card actually needs all the extra bandwidth yet.

Normally the bandwidth between the slots is shared out unevenly between
the slots of PCI express mobo's (or so it seemed from something I
read). For instance, there might be a 16x PCI slot for the graphics
card, and 4 1x PCI slots for the sound cards, etc... With the new SLI
dual graphics card mobo's that are appearing, it might be split 8x PCI
for graphics card 1, 8x for graphics card 2, and 3 1x PCI slots for the
other cards.
Orph, the actual form factor of the slots is of little consequence -
AGP or PCI really doesn't matter provided the right amount of data can
be sent at once. I'd guess PCI was never really developed as the only
thing that needed extra bandwidth was the graphics card, so they
furthered AGP slots for that purpose from 1x up to the modern 8x. Now
it makes sense to provide added bandwidth potential for any components,
and PCI-E now provides an amount of bandwidth that surpasses AGP.
Motherboards still have one slot that is used for graphics cards over
other components, so I don't see what difference it really makes.

I don't get what is complicated in this matter. There is a new
interface called PCI-Express that is, I assume, a development on PCI
slots. Its faster than AGP slots, therefore it makes sense to make
graphic cards that use it as it allows faster communication with the
rest of the computer.

Orph, just take PCi-X as something that is not related in any way whatsoever to PCI. It's not a 'jumped up PCI', it's not 'PCI version 2', it's not just marketing. Let's take a look at a brief 'slot' timeline:
ISA
PCI
AGP
Now, you can know that each of these are faster than the previous, yes? Now if I add PCI-X to the list, if you know that it is nothing to do with the original PCI, where's the problem?

i am not doubting you two, but have neither of you read that PCGamer article i offered you?? the guy was specifically asked, which would run HL2 better, the AGP cards or the PCI express.. he more less said, "yeah right  " when the guy asked him if the 256 PCI express would run it better..
thats why i was confused.. i didn't say that the new PCI slot wasn't faster than the old ones..
remind yourselves, i am still in my infancy about PC workings.. hell i am repairing pre 1998 models.. damed few of them even have AGP slots  .
perhaps i read it incorrectly

It doesn't make a difference because no graphics card actually needs the extra bandwidth yet. But in the future, as graphics cards get faster, they will need more bandwidth than is possible using AGP. PCI express means that when these graphics cards come along, people have systems that are able to use the to their maximum potential. If you wait until the graphics cards that need the bandwidth are out, then the only people who you can sell these graphics cards are people who just bought a new PC, and at any one time, that isn't very many people.
