Windows XP Users

Tweak XP to load faster and run smoother with this tweak guide.

Its not for beginners, but can be helpful if you have basic knowledge of pc's. Its concise and easy to use, but also has warnings in the key places where changes effect major operations, in this way you know exactly how/where you may screw up.

many things in windows that slow it down are just long default timeout settings, some as high as 30 seconds.

i followed this guide, my PIII 500 boots up in about 8 seconds now i guess.. i dunno i suppose i could time it, but needless to say, its amazingly quick now.

my advice, since it takes multiple reboots to make the changes, bookmark page 1 and then notice which successive page you are on so you can go back swiftly.

this guide is well worth the time it takes setting it up guys..

BTW WindowsXP's version of IE6 has its own "popup" blocker, you don't need all that clutter on your page such as google toolbar and other similar addon's

note, i did not say that IE was better than firefox :biggrin:

its just nice that IE finally got its own blocker without an addon.

still the google toolbar is handy, although i use firefox.

Personaly, I dont have troubles with boot ups. For 2 reasons. I use XP pro instead of home. XP home takes a while longer for some reason to load once the Windows GUI has loaded. Second, I hybernate my system all the time, so loading takes little to no time.

Third, my computer usually wakes up before I do :biggrin:

that guide is for all XP's, but mainly for Pro..

there are a s**tload of tweaks nick, most aims at speedy bootups, but a substantial portion is for saving resources.. something we all will need for compiling :biggrin:

i suggest everyone read the guide, even if you use none of it.

The IE popup blocker is part of Service Pack 2. However, SP2 is so f**king buggy I had to uninstall it because it made my computer damn near unusable. Every time we have some Microsoft rep come into MicroCenter I'm like "Wow, that's nice, WHY DOES SP2 BREAK MY COMPUTER?!"

Of course, even more fun was asking the XP Media Center rep why you couldn't record to Divx, or rip dvds to play on the portable media player. He got all uncomfortable, mumbled something about 'digital rights management', and moved on lol

blue, be quiet, you're tasting foot again. until you read the article, just be quiet.

XP does have issues with performance, and specifically booting,
Ballblue - it runs a crap load of needless services on startup for
example, and on older machines (evidently not yours) guides like this
are extremely useful :smile:

XP has always booted up really quickly for me, far far faster than all
the older versions. Shutting down is another matter though, it seems to
take much longer. While you wouldn't think of this as much of an issue
("you don't have to sit and wait for it to turn off"), it is when you
are restarting your computer frequently :sad:

i found that while reading the article, that the times are pre set.. the splash screen while it loads is on a timer. its not doing anything but waiting for the clock to run down to zero. :sad:

i specifically like the resource saving tips.

The problem is by default it blocks ALL popups. I believe Mozilla and like Browsers block outside pop ups. Meaning Pop Ups that are both auto-executed and a different domain. But that's what I've noticed.

That link has some useful advice on pages 7,8, and 9. That's about it though. You should have turned most all of that crap off in the first place

I just didn't take the time to go through services and some of those registry settings.

I have seen, that faster computers usually take longer to load. Especially if you have to load raid drivers and whatnot.

hmm.. when I had problems with toolbars appearing from nowhere it was mostly various "adult toolbars" :rolleyes:

To buy a new computer instead of fixing a few thing like this seems
kinda stupid... and then, even if you bought a faster one, you could
probably decrease the boot time even more

Boot times for me have always been weird. When I first installed XP it booted up fast for about a week, then pretty slow (1-2 minutes on the XP load screen), and now fast again. It doesnt bother me much tho, I usually get up, kick (yes kick) the power button, and get dressed while it boots. I am nerd, hear me roar.

Boot times are easy to keep low. Just don't have as much crap loaded. Or bypass it by leaving the computer on.

OR, you can probably get away with hibernating the computer. So it fully shuts off and comes back to state quickly (I've heard there's been some issues with this though)

My computer takes roughly 10-15 seconds from button push to password login, after that it's a 5 second process at most.

Odds are I've followed it unintentionally. (I'm taking school to be a computer and network technician, and I'm often tweaking my settings to my own use.) Occasionally guides like this will give me one or two new things, which I just add to my habits. :smile:
