Is it me or do a majority of the materials in HL2 [when you make your own map] seem oversized [when at scale of 1].

Thats why the default texture scale in hammer should be set to
something like 0.25 or 0.5. Larger images are used to get higher
detail, so they need to be shrunk in the editor to fit things correctly.

512x512 textures are intended to be for 128x128 brushes or equivalent size/scale, so leave your default scale at .25.

Permeates, it means "travelled through" effectively, kinda like er osmosis.
