Maybe because its a Lan server. Lan restrictions are to local class (C).

I tried to add the server at different times over the last couple of days and it didn't show up. What's it called?

And when I try to connect to steam servers (I don't have steam) it gives me the LAN error.

Er....I imagine you need to have Steam to connect to a Steam server.

its kinda nice once its installed.

it crosses many programs into one.

its like ICQ and Gamespy, and a bit of won thrown in..

you can talk ingame to people outside, and vice versa..

It's been a bitch to my C (windows) drive though. The D/L keeps leeching space off C and I have to keep moving/uninstalling files from drive to drive and cleaning them up too.

The reason why it is so big is that instead of operating off of your current HL installation, it copies all your game files and archives them into steam content files. you can choose to let it delete all your old HL stuf afterwards, thereby saveing discspace, but DON'T DO IT.

I've only gotten into the server once. it's usualy been "not responding" when I've hopped on steam to have a go.

Apparently my client.dll differs from the server's and refuses connection. Haven't tried any other DM serves yet.

EDIT: works fine on another server

Oh, I see. Maybe you've been trying to download the map from the server. Well, don't do that, as it's actually a complete mod. Download it separately.

No I've downloaded the MOD and tried to join via steam. Am I meant to do something to make it load the gmdm2 mod instead?

Well it should appear on the "third party games" section, underneath all the official games. If not, you've installed it in the wrong place and Half-Life will not be able to find the mod dlls when it tries to connect to the server.

I got the option of installing gmdm2 when I installed steam (I had it before I changed) and I ticked the box. In the games list it has the mods there and Dedicated Server at the bottom (what's that one?) I can't see and third part games section.
By the way, I'm new to steam.

If you don't see any third party games, then the mod is not installed. The only mods you'll see listed are official valve mods. Move the gmdm2 mod folder over to the steam location. C:\Program Files\Steam\Steamapps\name@site.com\half-life and toss the gmdm2 folder in there. Steam doesn't copy mods/files over correctly, for some unknown reason. It woulda saved Valve a LOT of bandwith if it did, since tons of people had to redl CS and TFC and such completely.

depending on the rotations speeds, why not leave GMDM2 and add the comp maps as well?

The Gmdm2 mod. may unbalance other people's maps - things like double-value healthkits and extra ammo in the guns (as well as doubled ARgrenades and 5*gauss ammo).
