Do the "Zoner?s HL Comp. tools" compile maps slower than the original Valve Hammer compiling tools? For me it takes around 10 times longer time to compile a map with the "Zoner?s HL Comp. tools", and I?m not kidding. When I compile just a little map it takes between 10 and 15 minutes. What?s the differense between the original tools and Zoner?s HL Comp. tools?

A small map as in 1 room will take about 30 secs for CSG, BSP and VIS (for me). A map with about 5 rooms + 3 corridors will probably take about 5 mins. However a map with RAD in too (lighting) will make it take much longer, about 3 mins for 1 room and 15 maybe for a small map. These are just rough estimates but are you sure you aren't compiling ZHLT with RAD but weren't using RAD with the VHE compiler?

it's probably what he said, that rad wasn't running for some reason before. or perhaps your map is just bigger now?

if you want faster compiles, get more RAM and/or make sure you are compiling with batch files or some compiler front end- not in worldcraft/hammer.

I love having a gig of RAM. :biggrin:

people get confused because the zoner tools more/less force you to map more error free, the stock "Q" tools will accept more trash than zoners will, so you thinking them taking longer, may be just there way of saying "whats this s**t?"

stick with the zoners tools, for the most part, they will not lead you wrong.

in a few isolated incidents, the new 2.5.3 17 custom build, will bork out on you, unless you specifically need the merl custom build, don't use it.. odds are it will bork on you as well..

If you're using hlrad.exe -extra it's been known to slow compile times by approximately one helluvalot. Save it for final compiles. My compiler settings for a quicker compile are to run hlvis in -fast mode, and either use fullbright lighting (don't run hlrad.exe at all) or to render hlrad.exe -nopaque, whatever that does. Others may vary, especially those who know what they're doing. Save the real options (hlvis.exe -full and hlrad.exe -extra) for when you've got a couple hours on hand for a final map.

Alternately, Map->Check for problems.

Slower or not, it would be most unwise to discard them on their speed credentials.

Only the Devil and his band of sinners dare use the original Hammer tools, for they spread pestilence, famine, war and death!

USE ZHLT OR GO TO HELL!

Hornpipe, the same goes for qrad -extra

Zoner's tools are actually faster, especially at VIS. Apparently.

XP-Cagey's custom build of MHLT 1.7 are the fastest of the lot apparently, and have a few nice bonuses such as improved clipping over rough terrain, more efficient clipnode usage, and so on. Gets kinda confusing though, with them being custom builds of Merl's custom builds of Zoner's custom builds of Valve's custom builds of the original Quake compile tools :lol:
