wonder if it's worth it, though

Yup its real, there is a 3rd brand to the world of gfx cards. Wildcats are powerfull AND EXPENSIVE! These cards are mainly used for rendering, In fact I believe this is the same model that was used to render everything in Star Wars Episode 2 (look at its max resolution!). Its really not meant for gameing, its got A LOT of memory, but its not fast enough to persay the 6800 GT's memory.

I tried buying one at one point, but 3D Labs doesnt sell it to you, saying that we dont need that kind of power. Plus there is a large contract/licence.

Here is a card even more powerfull from their web site: http://www.3dlabs.com/products/product.asp?prod=293

It's one of the most powerful PC graphics cards in existence, you certainly wouldn't use it for gaming, even if you could afford it. Really, it's just way too powerful. If Microsol were allowed to speak on this subject, they would say:
You'll pay a hefty premium on this card or have to fill out a stack of forms two feet high.

Somebody buy one of these things for HL2, and tell me how fast it is.

Massively multithreaded machines have no use for PC gaming though :/ . Plus I bet many if not most of the machines snarkpit users run have better performance than a single node of that beast. Why plug a gfx card into it though? You could just use it to software render tons of frames per second on its own  .

you could wire it up and run flightsimulator wiht 15 screens on 1 card!

the problem would be the ports.

I think you'll find that the above supercomputer is considerably more expensive than anything anyone here's ever seen. It's around a million times more powerful than a standard desktop PC. Can someone get an exact pricing on that thing? I WANT ONE!!!

I am sure a MIPS based SGI cluster would outrun it anyday. 512 cpu's
per system, 2tb ram per system and 8 systems can be put into a cluster.
Coupled with a RISC compatible Unix, that makes a very fast
server/rendering cluster.

Im telling you/everyone here, this card plays games like crap, its
meant for rendering models (hence its massive memory), or CG movies
(like the final fantasy movie). Its got a lot of RAM, but its slow RAM,
meaning its not up to par with other cards.

I've seen workstation cards upwards of $5,000 each. But as Slayer said, they're for rendering not gaming.

Would it not be possible to make a card this powerful which was fast aswell? I don't understand how graphics cards work but surely it's possible to have both power AND speed.

Of coarse its expensive its a CAD card, Valve probably use similar ones. Never seen DX9 one though.

You use more expensive RAM... It's like the whole GFX card RAM scandal which went on. Turns out most 128mb DDR cards are better than their 256Mb card improvements, mainly because the 256mb cards use crap RAM, whereas the 128Mb cards use good stuff.

They won't make a graphics card with power and speed because nobody would buy it. It'd be just way too expensive - around $2000 say.

Gaming---Fast RAM.

Rendering---Large amount of RAM.

Gaming/rendering---a feat that is yet to be accomplished.

Actually, it says it has DDR3, which is the fastest they have on video cards right now I believe. You're right, though- this is for cad/rendering/etc., it's probably next to useless for gaming. If you want to waste a lot of $$ on impossibly powerful graphics cards, just go get yourself a 6800 SLI rig
