ok, i have hit my first steam glitch, i can no longer seem to load a map in SP mode via the "start run" menu, nor can i seem to load my own "lan" game to look at one that way either..

how does one go about loading specific maps, in specific ways?

any clues guys?

You cant play offline until the next update.

Just start a server to test the map, Bung a pass on it if you are worried someone will connect.

+ via game smenu I think you can right click & create shortcut & edit that.

Can't ya just load the map through your WON shortcut since WON is still active?

Just do it like normal, that is, unless you over-wrote everything with Steam...

in that case, I'm not sure what you'd need to do.

I know that I had to copy all my maps, sprites, sounds etc from my old valve folder to my new steam folder after I installed steam. Hope this helps.

simple answer is m8, That you dont have them in the right place.

your hl folder is the same its just in a diff place.

steam/steamApps/email@email/half-life/valve/maps/

Well I've just kept all my old HL stuff on the HD and when I test maps I just run that one instead. But what makes me laugh is that I made an extra layer of backups which took hours because I had to clean up my HD. I thought installing steam removes everything from your old HL folder with no option. So I made a backup of the necessary files from the old HL, only to find that with steam I have 2 and a half copies of Half-Life! (Half because the backup of the old HL only has wads, maps, etc.)

a success of sorts, and a great one it is..

i dunno how you guys play but i have to have my #3 mouse button set to "squat/jump" and have it bound that way.. when steam re-wrote everything it messed it all up.. actually all it did was a freash install and i fixed it..

make you an "auto exec" file with this inside:

alias +lj "+duck;wait;+jump"
alias -lj "-duck;-jump"
bind mouse3 "+lj"

if you do not know how to make an auto exec file, just find one and edit it to another location with the above info and it will work, in other words copy/paste one to another location and edit its contents.

then go into:

c:\program files\steam\steamApp\email@email\half-life\valve

and incert the auto exec file (copy/paste the edited version)

then load a map in steam and check out your new bind

i am stupid, and i made it work, so can you..

orph m8, on some servers you cannot use external configs, so writing an alias may limit your ability to join servs.

lemme see, choices..

1) use jump bind and be happy but limited to certain servers.

2) not use jump bind and be miserable..

yeah, thats a tuffy, considering how often i frag :heee:

i appriceate it korn, but if those are my only options, then #2 blows chunks.

some people oppose scripts, Of course you cant stop people binding to config.cfg, It just means they cant write aliases & new commands.

It doesnt happen in many servers afaik, But one of the ideas of steam is to limit peoples ability to edit certain things for fear of cheats etc.

Of course this does actualyl aggrovate more people probably.

Thats afaik, I may be wrong, But im fairly sure of it.

one begs to ask, is a legit bind, considered cheating?!?!

all, it begins with the word "bind" just like s**tloads of HL stock ones, the only difference being the activation of two distinctly different actions with one click..

still even if you are correct, and i can only use it to test maps for critiques and reviews, then so be it.. cause i just have to use it, call it a short coming of mine, but i have used it to long to switch now :/

That's a legit bind, just rather useless, imo. It's not really all that hard. I mean, if you can't hit two buttons at the same time you're probably not gonna be winning anyway.

When it comes to scripts, there are far far worse things than a simple alias to jump and duck at the same time.

What other sorts of scripts do people use? Always been a bit of an arcane subject for me - I don't use any.

I agree, But when it comes to games like tfc, I wrote loads of scripts for it & life was a whole load easier, I played uber loads better with them.

You cant defeat one script without removing aliasing completely.

Its not that common though afaik so nothing to worry about.

my scores, are problematic most days..

There are some really shiitty aliases that people have created, such as backwards long jumping, firing mp5 spams out behind you, silenced gauss charging, and so on. The only two aliases that I use are bunny hopping and long jumping. The bunny hopping one is essentially useless in HL now though, since most mods have removed the ability to use it. It still works in AG though, so I keep the bind.

I only use scripts in CS (homemade ones- not hacks). I basically bind my mouse 5 button to: Buy me the best armor I can afford, buy ammo for primary and second guns, buy an HE grenade and a flashbang. Its not much, but it sure is nice not wasting time hitting b82b83b84b6b7 as fast as I can.

And I don't see the point in a crouch-jump bind anyways... I just do it when I need it- I've never had it interfere with my level of play or "busy up" my hands so I can't play well.

And I have mouse3 bound to reload. So convenient.

so i suck at multi-tasking

my # 3 is my mouse wheel, click it for the bind, roll it back to reload, and roll it forward to next weapon.

When you're crouch-jumping, you're more condensed and that much harder to hit.
