So I load up a test map, just an orange map with no lighting.

its very empty, all but a stalker and a combine console. The
stalker is just sitting there, working away at the console. I'm
walking around checking out the map when something very scary happens.

I walk by the stalked and it turns to look at me! gah that
spooked me, so I think "ok group AI dynamic thing" I walk away then out
of nowhere I hear this creepy noise and a FREAKING LASER starts
attacking me. I jump out of my seat and start running around in a
panic.

There are no lasers in my map!

It stops attacking and I turn to see the stalker... looking at me...

then BOOM out of its feet comes a laser shot! holy crap! The stalker was shooting lasers at me!

So I freak out and press my impulse 101 bind and whipe out my
x-bow. Time to die you freakin' zombie thing. I let a bolt
out and right as it hits the stalker hl2 crashes. So the game
freezes and the scary laser sound is just repeating untill the program
shuts down.

what a crazy easter egg/left over thing.

If you don't get an error message it didn't nessesarily crash. What is most likely is that they don't have a specific condition to handle a death of an object without certain parameters. Thus, it is taken care of by a condition handler for "everything besides what I specified" which ends program execution. To be honest, It means someone was lazy.

But that's just my guess. Obviously, I haven't seen the source, so I wouldn't know for a fact.
Blame it on Microsoft, God does.

Its a well known fact that stalkers shoot lasers from thier feet actually. Crazy eh? And they dropped other enemies for a withered ethiopian on stilts with laser feet who seems to be a 10th member of slipknot or something?!

actually, if you took a look at one of the original stalker designs in the Raising The Bar book, you'd see that it was supposed to be equipped with a weapon, which is what the laser is left over from. I also remember that my friend who got the leaked beta sent me a couple of screenies of a stalker shooting the laz0r out of his face. My friend was freaked out by those things. And scanners were suposed to have smal machine guns... and the OSIPR was supposed to be an incendiary grenade launcher... A gunship has an Independence Day-style attack if it's hovering in place and you/your allies are right under it... i could go on forever. They oughta release a Director's Cut version, with all the cool stuff put back in, like the Borealis level and all the original weapons.

/my 2 cents...
The Plane, my ongoing HL2 comic.

they still got that, if you make a gunship (with the npc_create
npc_combinegunship command) they will fly around for some time, and if
you stand under them, they will fire the beam at you.

The old stalker worked properly in the leaked HL2 content, though it was damn annoying.
