When I play games, for some reason, the game picture wont match with the screen of the monitor.

This happens both when I play using different resolutions on the
desktop and in the games (e.g. 1600*1200 on the windows desktop and
1280*960 in the game), as well as when I have the same resolution on
both. Sometimes the game picture appears to be to high, leaving a black
border at the bottom while a part of the picture is missing at the top.
Other times the whole picture is smaller than the monitor and there are
black border all around it. Or a combination of both. At rare occasions
the picture fits the montior as it's supposed to do.

I have a nVidia 6800gt. I've tried both nVidia's and DNA-Force's newest
drivers as well as some old nVidia drivers. I have the latest DirectX
installed. I've scanned the registry and searched for malware and
viruses.

I think this started when I installed Battlefield 2, at least that was when I first noticed it.

Help would be greatly appreciated.

Why on earth would you want to run a game in 1600 x 1200?! I've never had need to run higher than 1024 x 768.

As for your problem...haven't a clue. Maybe you pushed your card a little too far with the high res, and its brain got damaged.

Umm, I think he runs his desktop at 1600x1200, and the game at 1280x960.

Manually adjust the setting on your monitor (with the buttons). It
might be that your monitor's settings (H-position, H-size) for that rez
aren't whats normal. Play around with them and see if that helps.

I'd suggest that too. If you have an AOC-screen, you see that round
button (the only one) at your screen. Press it and turn it around to
adjust various settings.

omegaslayer and Forceflow, thanks for your help, that seemed to help.

I've always thought that if you, let's say, make your screen half the
size of the monitor in a game using the buttons on the monitor that the
desktop, and other games, will be effected by that as well and
therefore be half the size too. Now it seems as if I can adjust the
settings for different applications at different resolutions
independently of each other.

Is it possible to in some way harm you graphics card by pushing it to far?

Another little thing I've noticed is a strange pattern that appear at
the bottom of the screen sometimes, looks like this:

This appears in HL2 when playing at 1600*1200, I haven't tested higher
resolutions. I've seen it in other games too. Doesn't bother me very
much as I don't play at that res, but still it would be fun to know
what's causing it.

It looks like you've overclocked your graphics card way too much, like around double its rated speed. If so, slow it down before it blows up.

Yup thats the case.

As fot your little thing at the bottom of your screen, it might be a
developer tool, and its displaying the FPS value, possibly check it
with cl_showfps 1 and compare the two values.

I haven't clocked any of my comp parts.

The yellow number in the bottom right corner is just Fraps showing the FPS.

Overclocking and not cleaning your card are the only ways you can damamge your video card by using it normally, even if you stress it in video games. If it is a setting that runs in game then you have nothing to worry about. If the card does malfunction, however, it should be covered under a warranty (unless you got one as is or something as such).

Not sure why a pattern like that would show up only at the bottom. Sounds like a mis-matched frequency. If it were overheating issues (which cause artifacts and such) it'd happen to (most likely) the entire screen.

You could always adjust the monitor independant of other applications as long as the current application is fullscreen.
Blame it on Microsoft, God does.
