I have been bored silly of late, i miss my times spent critiquing maps, but have seen the level of interaction remain constant in spite of my no longer doing them.. i am proud to say that snarkpit has a great collection of members dedicated to helping others.

still since my childish, self imposed exile, and subsequent return i have done very little to contribute to the pit, at least nothing on the level preceding that event.

my question is simple, would it be worth it to anyone for me to reinstall HL and all the updates?

I think you're critiques were well-written and useful, but I also think you should do more reviews...

I personally enjoyed reading the reviews for the last Snarkpit mapping competion - the reviews were honest and well-meant without being too brutal.

...and the Snarkpit lacks a decent reviewing system

What would be good would be if any user could post a review of a map, for example:

Eden by Peter Manson,

Read a review by matt, Orpheus, Vash.... etc.

That would be good.

It would be good, yes- if you're that desperate you can do it with a comment. When I figure out a decent way to 'do it' (i.e. format, archiving, keeping them seperate from 'proper' site reviews or not, etc.) I will

Well, "officially endorsed" ones anyway- I'm guessing there would be some reviews submitted that would be rubbish that I don't really want to 'clog up' the website with :/ Maybe if it was like submitting news, and crap ones get shunted into map comments...

Yeah, there is potential for rife posting of inane rubbish like "ths map was well cooll, 11/10" all on a review page :/

precautionary measures would be a requirement, and i am sure an expectation of everyone here as well..

i would say, any system that filters out the rubbish, would be acceptable to everyone, and could incite some to improving their efforts to be one of the chosen.

my only fear, would be 2 fold, if someone was biased against, or for a person, and secondly, if it was to stringent a system it could discourage overtly.

we could possibly entertain the idea of a rating system for reviews.. IE, my reviews of the competition maps.. some might have liked them, some not.. i think a system that involves everyone could be useful..

/my thoughts

How about a review doesn't get added to the review listings until an admin reads it over and deems it acceptable. At his point it is put into the list of user reviews for that map. If its extra good, then the admin can mark it as official, in which case the link to the review will be more prominent and it will be added to the official reviews database.

And yes orph, you should...if only coz I'm gonna start a 24hr "classic" mapping project either today or tomorrow, and I want as much feedback on the beta (yes its meant to be a quick project but I wouldn't release it without getting snarkpit feedback!) as possible  Seriously though, loads of people still comment on maps and that is great, but few go into the depth you did.

I haven't been able to get it compiled, but I also haven't changed anything in the map. If I could get someone to compile it I can fix the entity issues and it'll be done in my eyes.

How about attempting to stop lame spam reviews by only letting people who have been a member for a certain amount of time do them.

as i said once already, you can pretty much see whom votes in character

i put the derogatory options in there just so i would not discriminate against anyones opinions, knowing full well some would vote negatively.. which i feel is fairly justified from their perspective.. i thank everyone for their honesty.

although, i am not surprised of the outcome, i am however surprised at how few voted.

no, not cause i am an invaluable asset, but i honestly thought we had more active mappers currently at snarkpit :/

anywhos' HL is reinstalled.. DoD and NS is as well as TFC OP4 and CS, i could not recall if there were any others of note. please advise if i erred.

now all i need to do is ask, since i have done no critiques with steam, is it any different than it used to be?? i mean, basically, is screenshots and the maps folder still easy to find?

The Steam directory structure for HL is more or less the same...it's just buried a few directories in :/

i.e. Steam\SteamApps\adamhawkins@planethalflife.com\Half-Life\valve\maps\ I think...i'm at work and can't check!

Screenshots are the same and are saved into the Half-Life folder as I remember it
