i had a go at making some trees and hedges, and was quite pleased with how they turned out. the epoly is only 4300 in the pic, and w_polly is under 200.

but i've a feeling i'll hit some other smelly limit if i use too many models like this. :grenade:

Whoa, those are really nice mate, they are entirely models right? The bark on the trees looks a bit...iffy in places, but all round really nice job

cheers Reno. and yes, all models. i sort of got the idea from when i was hiding in some bushes in a game of splinter cell. (nice looking game, crappy gameplay)

you can sneak about in these hedges too.

considering, how damned few quality plant models exist, i am quite please with these..

i feel the colors might have been improved, but the structure is damned convincing... IMO the colors look misaligned, bark tends to flow up/down on the trees where i live, but otherwise they are 9/10 in my book

Those look pretty good! I'll put them up here on the models download page if you want. Although, much as I've tried in the past, I've never been able to walk through bushes :/

Is that a TFC map you're making ? Would be a lot different from standard-style TFC maps, and I love that idea.

thanks guys. that was my first attempt at making trees like that, and was done as more of a concept test. the good feedback is encouraging me enough to go do it again, with more time taken on texturing. hopefully i can come up with some sort of garden/forest set, but i imagine it'll take me a few days.

and no, it's not any particular map in the pic, it's just a testbox to showcase the models. but i will probably use the trees in a tfc map that i'm working on with a friend. i might even make those ones climbable. we'll see.

Tree ferns have a thick cylindrical trunk like a palm tree, only shorter and much more 'hairy'.

as far as i can tell, they seem to be improving slightly, but i still wouldn't be happy with releasing them as finished articles. the numbers relate to the number of the .mdl file in this zipfile

any offers of better textures would be well recieved, btw.

fishy, you are on the road to greatness, there is no doubt..

perhaps i can help?... your latest plant resembles a palmetto bush, but needs refined a bit.. hopefully these screens i got off the net will help.. i dunno how hard it would be to make them more authentic, but at least these screens will show you where to go..

BTW, yours aren't bad at all really, but the remind me of the prehistoric trees the dinosaurs used to eat, or at least the pictures i have seen of them  .. good work bud.

cheers Orf. i'll have a go at making some textures from those pics. shaping a model for them should be easy enough, but i think it'll be down to the textures as to how good it ends up.

then do a google search bud, as i optimized the hell out of those screens for the 56k among us... the quality is to low for textures i am afraid..

if you like, i can upload the unaltered versions?

i had a try with the ones that you posted, but there aren't any good clear shots of a flat leave, so i dont think i'd be able to use even the originals :/

you can see my hand-drawn version is almost lifelike anyway.

Seethrough textures... It's something only steam HL supports. Like { textures on solids in maps... same concept.

And as for not having the renderers it's because Steam is not 56k friendly. I'll get it in september when I get decent internet in my new building.

i had read that it was only a matter of replacing the hw.dll and the sw.dll files in your hl folder with the same named files from DoD 1.0

i don't have DoD, but i know it doesn't work by using the dll's from my steam directory. or maybe it does, and i just borked the attempt. wouldn't be the first time.

maybe someone with DoD1.0 could help?

anyways, i've zipped up some fern models. there's 2 trees and a hedge too. anyone thats interested can get them here.

there's also an updated model viewer for use with transparent models, available here , that might even deserve a mention on the utilities page.

right normal hl supports also see through modles. you just need the right dlls for it!!

they indeed came wiht dod 1.0

heres a link to downlaod them :

http://www.halflifefusion.com/download.php?e=8&r=BYID

if im right you need those. try it.

but how did you made those textures?? im really bad in plan textures
