what is your primary connection to the net?
yeah, some of you may be in school, and have a different connection than at home, so it will be up to you to decide which is your primary one.. my advice, you are nearly grown, i wouldn't count mom's and dad's house as your home much longer
note:before you bitch that there are sub categories to DSL and Cable, remember there are only 6 options blanks to make a poll from
if you mark other, please specify..

Er, Uni connection, which I guess is an ?ber-fast-LAN connected to the JANET backbone. Most downloads I get on the internet are due to the website/'means', rather than my connection

28.8kbps max, should be able to get 40 or so but the phone company wont do anything about it because the Australian 'standard' is 19.5kbps grrrr

i have heard on the FM radio recently, that with the increasing popularity of DSL, the market is getting ever more competitive.. i hear soon that 5Mbps will be a standard package for download speeds..
my 1.5 Mbps, is fast, but its seems to me that if everyone eventually switches over to DSL, then my 1.5 won't mean squatt... as the uploads from their end will be slow as hell..
kinda makes you wonder, if everyone downloads, and forgets about upload speeds, then they are creating an impasse that will be difficult to circumvent..

are you sure of the location of the problem rumple?
speaking for my area, anything within my household is my problem, but from the box upon my outside wall to the junction on the street, its the phone companies issue, and they will return as many times as it takes to make me happy.
have them, check the line noise, and if its available, have them put line conditioners on yours to quiet the noise.
with dial-up, any noise at all causes the connection to be slower, cause it has to recheck the data more often.
i guess aussieland has its disadvantages too
my condolences.

Rumple, did you try unplugging your phones before connecitng? What aboust ringing up your phone providers support and asking them to increase the line gain... if they won't do it for internet, pretend that the phone is too quiet when you are talking to people, and they should try to fix that by increasing the gain, which will give you a better modem connection.

i upgraded to a 1meg connection with an expectation of better connection speeds to game servers. it didn't make a jot of difference. all it was good for was getting really big files a bit quicker. i downgraded back to 600k connection after the first month.

I wish i could complain about a 56k connection. When I'm at home my connection is 24k max. And I have to use AOL. Back in the day I could get 100+ points in TFC with a 1000 ping. I coulda taken my clan up to the top with a T1 connection

Got a 1.5Mb Cable connection (about ... I've seen it go a little faster on one or two occations)
However, before the giant assholes, Comcast, took over, it was completly uncapped. Its really nice when nothing goes slower then 500Kb/s online. It also used to be cheaper ... and no one else in my neighborhood had it.

I don't understand... If you have a connection 1.5m and sometimes slightly more, where does a 500k/sec download speed come from? Wouldn't you need a 4m connection for that?
I'm really glad we don't have transfer caps on our service, but our upload speed is limited to a quarter of the download speed. So in theory this will double when we upgrade, which is nice. It's actually possible to get an uncapped cable connection for free by installing new firmware on your modem, but you provider would cut you off as soon as they found out. They might try and get you fined as well... maybe you could get away with it by saying you thought the program to put new firmware on was just another internet speed booster tool

Rumple phone up tech support for your phone company and ask them to boost the signal to your phone number. That will make it faster and they do it all the time. If they ask why say your phone calls are crackily and have fuzz in the background

How much does it cost for cable or DSL in the USA? I know here in Australia it's bloody expensive if you want a 1.5mb/s ADSL connection.

Jeff, I said before it was capped it never went below 500 Kb/s
Now it barely reaches 350 Kb/s  (however, when downloading from steam is stays at a steady 1.5 Mb/s, which is odd, but cool)
My cable is rather expensive now, and they keep raising the rates (sons of bitches). I think it's like $50/month (US) as long as you have their cable TV as well, otherwise it's $60/month.
When it was At&t, not only was it uncapped, but it was $30/month. Then comcast took it over, wanted to 'expand' and to guarantee a certain speed they have to cap everyone. However, I could get what I previously had through Comcast, it would just cost $90/month and that's rediculously high, so screw it.

Whoa, $50 US?. Mine is $39.99CDN uncapped. I get anywhere from 500-1500kbps on Steam (this was 3 games at once, so combined it was a fair bit.) As well I was downloading other stuff too. Man I love the bandwidth.

Well, I get 1.5Mb on steam too
I really wish AT&T never sold it, but they most likely were losing money. They're selling their Wireless district too, Cingular is buying it.
However, I found that they do DSL now. I have no idea how fast it is. But taking that they own the digital phone lines (fiber optics), I don't think it's very slow

Awsome, just found out that all telewest packages are being increased at no extra cost. Our 512k going to 750, 1 meg is going to 1.5, and 2 meg is going to 3... and nobody has to pay anything

sadly, i am beginning to believe, that these polls are not as popular as everyone lead to believe..
35 votes, out of 428 members.. even allowing for 50% of those members to be bogus accounts, thats still a very sad representation of the snarkpit.
do we truly have so few active members? or is it only 35 very vocal members overshadowing the quiet ones?
i fear, that if HL2 doesn't arrive soon.. our roster may decay to the point where... well enuff doom and gloom..
walks away mumbling

we just want a break from polls ;P
Oh wait there I go speaking for myself again  In all seriousness though Orph, i'd say 35 votes is impressive for an internet messageboard, most of which die about 3 days after their inception

They retreacted that statement and said that people saying this meant the game was delayed to 2005 are crazy. The point of what he said was to show that they are willing to put as much time, effort and money in as is needed, not to say that they are going to take another year.

Amazon says 4th of June for Doom3 and HL2, and they set that date within the last week. But then again the date they had before that was December 31st 1969...
