Wait, another thing Gearbox should have had finished before the release of Halo:PC? Boy, they sure are generous!!!

I didn't care much for halo. I actually thought it was lame. Sorry I just couldn't get into it.

It was fun for about 20 minutes. Then it got incredibly repetitive. At least games like Doom try to diversify the environments a bit....

WTF :wtf:

I'm confused as to how you could find lack of variety in Halo's environments, yet find plenty in Doom? In Halo you find yourself in human space ships under attack, temperate islands, wierd alien landscapes, icy wastelands, alien spaceships, and of course all the odd old structures on Halo itself. I do admit though, that within some of these parts they re-use the same rooms to a near unforgivable extent.

I'd certainly have given it a try if I owned Halo on the PC, but since Gearbox apparently took years to port the game and only managed to make it worse than the Xbox version, it wasn't a product I considered buying.

What I should have said was probably something like:

each area was the same damn texture over and over. At least in Doom, you could tell different areas in a level apart, while on the first level of Halo, every single corridor was virtually identical.

there we go.

Woah now people, this wasn't a thread to bash Halo the game, merely the PC port by Gearbox.

Sorry, it's sort of a reflex action whenever the game is mentioned.

I guess it makes sense to have the Halo structures very similar (as the Halo is a weapon, those buildings' purposes are to act as controls or whatever - they are purely funcitonal buildings) but I agree it does make for some boring repetition at times. The other parts are different enough however - there is for instance a huge difference between the human ship and the covenant ship in terms of textures and architecture...but the convenant ship in particular does have some annoying corridor crawling sections.

Bah, its co-op that makes it so amazing though to be fair

The level design was not Halo's strong suit in the least. That winter level on the way to the control center was goddamn ridiculous with all the identical hallways and rooms. However, the game redeems itself because it was very tough yet beatable on legendary, there was co-op, and the ability to pistol whip people was awesome. (and my ability to destroy any and all challengers in deathmatch with a mere pistol  )

What do you mean a "mere pistol" - its possibly the best weapon in the game! I'd have you on blood gulch anytime

I haven't actually played Halo PC, but I do know how slowly it seems to run next to graphically comparable games. It seems like one of those games where to bring it to another platform, they just did a straight port, like with GTA3, not a proper optimising-for-the-new-platform port like they did with Vice City (which runs far better on the PC even tohugh it's the same engine).

Really WTF???? Halo boring????? Halo is only good on the x-box, on the PC it sucked bad because no one could get decent frames without toning the graphics to where it looked fake. And reno:

It is the best weapon in the game, sometime I wish it couls be taken off because of its cheapness (yes I know the mode of "no snipers", but then you lose the sniper rifle).

But lets get back to the purpose of the tread, Ill try halo mapping, but right now im trying to learn UT2004 mapping(as 2004 is my fav game now)

Hmmm, I tend to do better with my trusty sniper rifle, but then thats the role I take in most FPSs. The pistol is stupidly good however, it makes most of the other weapons useless in open multiplayer maps.

I get constant headshots with the pistol from long distances. Good stuff.

I concur. The pistol is the defacto weapon of choice. Few weapons are superior in most situations. I really do feel the plasma weapons are weak too - plasma pistol seems nearly useless except to hit people with or take shields down a bit.

It does home in slightly when fully charged up, pretty useful in single player at times (shoot it in the general direction of moving enemies and duck behind cover) but not much cop in multiplayer. The needler, which I thought was absolutely pointless in my first play through, prove pretty handy in single player also...not too bad in multiplayer in desperate times as well. Most of the covenant weapons are most effective against convenant enemies, which does mean their use in multiplayer is lessened.

Favorite strategies (X-Box version):
  • On Sidewinder if you're in CTF, you can have someone throw the flag through the bars (where the overshield and active camo are) and get a much easier capture.
  • Blood Gulch, park a Warthog over the other team's teleporter. They'll either spawn into it and get stuck inside it, or get killed by it.
  • On Rat Race, you can shoot powerups that are floating in mid-air to make them fall down. Useful in lots of cases.
I'm really horrible with the sniper rifle though. Usually do much better with the pistol. Oooh, and the needler... You can just hold down the trigger and launch a whole volley. If all of them hit, it's just enough to kill someone - funny to watch them trying to outrun a giant purple blur homing in.

On Blood Gulch, I'm fairly sure that if the Warthog is parked on a teleporter it just stops it being usable?

I've not actually played any CTF on Halo, as I own just 1 Xbox so 4 player is a bit lame

You have to park it rather... Carefully.

I don't own an X-Box myself, but a lot of my friends do. You can link them all with a fairly common cable (forget what kind), unlike a super-expensive Gamecube link cable. 16 player CTF... Absolute chaos. Each X-Box is essentially a squad, with massive assaults and offensives and such... Really a fantastic experience.

Yeah its something I'd love to do sometime. My Xbox is reasonably old, and I'm kinda convinced its one of the old drive ones which are dodgy. Mine often gives the "cannot read disk" error, and its extremely annoying. So basically, if I get a job, I'd consider getting a second one with the new drive over the summer.
