Not the best topic idea, but I'm genuinely interested. I find myself
compiling after making the smallest changes, but I imagine some of you
could work for a few hours before hitting compile.

Depends on the map to be honest, and depends on my mood. If I'm quite
heavily inspired I'll happily work away for ages before compiling, but
if I'm mapping for the sake of mapping, I tend to compile more often
(as I can't think of anything decent to make, so one small thing merits
a look!). If a map takes hours to compile, I'll feel less inclined to
compile frequently than if a map takes just a few minutes.

from beginning to end, about 100 compiles.. as a rule i compile before i move out of an area, or about once per hour if i am staying within the area.

cuts way down on leaks, leak location and errors.

I tend to compile every time i change a texture

exageration

I really compile and check my maps to much. I'm to picky about my areas, not detail wise, but how I feel the map should look. If I don't think I have that floor, or ceiling just the right height or width or length, then I compile and check. Rince and repeat.

To be honest, I dont compile for days maybe weeks.. maybe days. Why with this nonsence you ask?!.. Well most of the time i know what the map is going to look like, and the fact I like going through and fixing a bunch of mistakes then fixing one.. compiling.. fixing another.. compiling and such.

i'll maybe compile small areas, or entity setups as seperate maps. but it takes major changes before i compile the whole thing if it's gonna be more than a 30 min shot.

I compile a lot while it's quick, then less and less as the map gets bigger. Once it takes 15mins+ I usually do a few hours' work first before compiling.

Mine currently takes a few minutes, so I'll compile whenever I do just about anything, mainly from changing a light setting.

you would think that as my machine got bigger, i would alter my view on this, but i still believe that you cannot compile to often..

i can say however, it is much more enjoyable to watch my 2.6 compile, than my old 400

Well, at first, I don't compile much, but after finishing main construction and finding errors, it's: fix, compile, fix, compile, fix, compile, ...

High wpoly error is one of the trickiest, you need to compile to see the results.

Not that often; obviously it depends on how far the map is, but usually no more than once a day (more likely to be once a week!)

Bleh, dunno really - usually when i've run out of steam on a large area, i block off the exits and compile then.

Every few hours i'd imagine - and obviously less as the map gets
bigger, doesn't tend to too badly as I never finish anything... heh.

In the initial stages, when I'm building the basic layout, I only compile when I've finished a decent section, probably after every 4-5 hours of work... When I'm building the detail I do compile quite frequently, maybe once every 15 minutes of work, just to make sure I'm not screwing up anything or making small errors.

Of course, "onlyents" compiles help a lot towards the end, best of all, onlyents and RAD will let you tweak lighting without running VIS too often

I typicaly finish an area before compiling at all, but then I compile like fifty times trying to get everything just right...

I compile every other brush change. Oh no wait that's coz I'm using UnrealED

With Half-Life I'd generally build a large amount of the map first,
then do a full compile. I'd tweak the architecture and lighting, then
start building the rest of the map room by room. It's a dreadful way to
work and I've completely changed my style since moving to Unreal.
