Does anyone else have this problem?
After a few hours on Hammer my PC thinks nothing has been installed. For instance SDK, Internet Explorer, HL2 etc. I can fix this by resetting my pc but why does it happen? It happens completely randomly, and when it does I can't save anything. Can it be prevented?
And before you ask, my pc is an XP

Yeah, I get that too. Normally it's just hl2 that craps out, but I have had a few times where Hammer faults out and crashes. Not sure why it does that, but I'm guessing it's because of a memory leak somewhere.

I do recall in Leperous's compile errors tut that the memory leak thing isn't an error

Im getting this same problem as well. My machine was actually getting so hot it was shutting my system down. Turns out the fans in my computer werent running as well as they could because of dust... blew the entire system out with some canned air and it stopped the shutdown due to overheating problem but when Im using Hammer it will still give me the problem you all are describing ... being that sometimes I cant access anything on my hard drive, which can be very very annoying if I have made changes to a map and want to save it.
A work around Ive found that lets me save my map is: I do a ctrl+alt+delete to bring up my task manager, go to the processes and shut down any processes that I dont need. Make sure you dont shut anything down that will keep windows from running but Ive done this a few times with success (and once without...) so that I could at least scavange enought memory so I could save my map and not lose the changes before I reboot.
Hope that helps a little...

I solved it by using tuneup memory-optimizer. Sometimes it slows down hammer a bit, anyway hammer keeps running this way and allways lets me safe my work. To save some time while compiling i first close hammer and the SDK window, so the systeem cleares some memory. Restart SDK and hammer open my work and compile.
Works for me. Aldo I'm planning to buy more memory.

I have also had this problem. It usually happens after a compile. My computer starts going really slow and choppy. Then my hardware monitor pops up saying that all of the voltages are way to high. When i try to save or do anything it wont let me and a lot of icons and random words disappear (for example the "Start" on the start icon). So all i do is restart and it works fine and then it will randomly do it again. It only happens when i have hammer running and usually after a complie and no i am not running half life 2 or any other program like that at the same time. Also i noticed it happened after the last update. It anyone knows how to fix this that would be great.

This has happened to me as well. Yay to Valve and Steam for being broken AGAIN!

You can add me to the list also. My system resources are consumed and my computer crashes. I think hammer or steam must have a memory leak, mainly because XP complains about the virtual memory at times while running hammer, usually before my system degrades

What do you mean "again"? It's never actually been fixed, so that "again" is inappropriate.

It might help if you post your system specs, it is most likely your
system because I have never had any of the symptoms you all are
describing. Here is what im at:
3400+ AMD 2.4GHz
1 gig RAM
X800 XT
And the memory leak has nothing to do with anything, it has to do with
the compile process that would take a long time to explain, in short
its got nothing to do with your problems.
BTW if you dont have a good system then hammer will run like crap, but
when you say that it wont save or act like its installed (not so sure
what you mean here) then I have to say that your system is screwing up,
not steam.

I'm using a crappy AMD Duron 800MHz (don't laugh) with 320MBRam (SDRam) and a moldy 128DDR GeForce5200fx. However, i have never had any problems with hammer (other than the fact that i have to reset my settings after every update). It doesn't even lag! Steam is another problem...

Close any steam windows (including the SDK) and the "out of resources"/random crashing won't happen.

This happens to me also, I'm running on a 3.2ghz with 2 gig of ram. After a point, Hammer seems to quit allowing me to save, and none of my other programs work. So, I just have to restart.
