When I first came here, #snarkpit gave out ops to anyone who idled or
wasn't an asshole. A few days later, these ops were revoked, reserving
them for Azelito, Monqui, Scary Jeff and Gwil (and of course Snark). I
was generally blamed for it, by Gwilmong, because of an exodus from
TWHL which resulted in refugees kick-banning each other (quite unfair
on me...). The channel has only had the same ops ever since, (except
ssmmdd recently by the gwil)

Anyhow, is it time for mass ops once more? Considering how very few
assholes ever pop in, and we all generally get along in the channel,
should ops be given to everyone?

The main benefits:

<br style="font-weight: bold;">
Quicker idiot removal: Some morons take ages to get removed, though a rare occurance

The warm, fuzzy feeling of democracy: Most channels have an all ops situation

It looks tidier: Ok, I'm clutching at straws here

(note the lack of a comedy third option, a plague on polling society IMO)

Stop being an ass face  Ops are reserved for the few main stayers who can use IRC. However I do feel 1 or 2 more ops could be used as the ones that tend to be there tend not to actually be there.

Is this poll asking for more mods or admin?

/me is confused.. and clearly shows that I am not a candidate for either cause of it.

Considering the fact I'm not an op, orph, no.

But I just felt it worked better when most people were ops. It would be
different if #snarkpit had nasty element (other than monqui and
fisheye) It doesn't REALLY make a difference, it'd just seem better
somehow...

I do feel we could use a few more ops (none are ever around on the rare
occasions I need one around), but I'm not sure its really necessary to
give them out en masse.

Well, in most cases a "NO" answer would suffice, but not in this case. If an OP is not a mod or admin, what are they?

I have heard people say in IRC "Be careful Orph, So and So is an OP" but I shrug it off in ignorance, considering Damned few would ever even think of banning yours truly from anything I chose to be part of.

So, what is an OP?

it's what you thought it was to begin with, Orph. i assume mephs thought you meant for the pit when you asked about admins and mods. an OP (operator) can kick, ban, set channel messages and modes etc. nothing worth having really.

Basically, in IRC an op (channel OPerator) has the @ symbol in front of
their nick. They have the power to kick people out of the room, change
the topic of the channel etc. Of course, not all ops are equal, some
people only get opped when they join the channel from other people (so
when they leave, it goes), whereas others get it from snark, or L the
channel bots (this makes it impossible/difficult for people to takeover
a channel, unless they own it)

Well if we are going about this, how about we change the snarkpit server over to gamesurge? The ops commands are actually memorable on that server, and theres loads more people on it than Quakenet, or at least it isnt filled with mindless fools.

I used to be on IRC all the time, but i found that everyone was at gwil's complete mercy, and he temporarily banned me for disagreeing with him. I found it rather ridiculous, so i stopped going. Also, Hugh googles on #triv.

Now that you've mentioned the IRC channel so openly EVERYONE is gonna join

we will ahve plenty of assholes to ban.

Had to have been a joke on his part. If I had caught wind of that and it not been, I'd have had a bit to say about it.. Publicly flogging someone for abusing their power.. Yeah, I love it. Would have been a glorious week methinks.

My apologies for not showing up more often. ( I realize that my absence is more pleasurable to some so its not a total loss )

The years I spent in [DRS] ruined me on real time chats.. I spent literally hours each day I was home sorting out clan issues and arguments galore. No offense to anyone here, but I really cannot read all that chatter anymore. My time here would belie that, but I can read each post when/if I feel like doing so. Real time doesn't really have a "when you want to" or an "as fast as you want to" option.. you screw around and what you were reading goes scrolling off the top edge.

Still, I would join sometime if something important needs addressed.. shrugs no one seems to PM anyone about that though..

Gamesurge. Gamesnet. Gamesbanana. Will it change it's name again? Will it ever be anywhere near as popular as Quakenet? Will it have held the #snarkpit channel for nigh on 4/5 years?

Do what you must with channel ops, but don't move the channel. It's just stupid.

Err.. long time no see

Reno, the only reason you aren't an op as it stands is because you are one of the "I lost my Q auth..." or "ah, I keep forgetting to add auth to perform" people, and we deliberately removed snark ops to make things neater about 4 months ago. Sort out your Q auth and away we go

The channel was only an 'all op' channel from the days where the max number of users was 5. This changed as soon as the channel became more popular... Not to be an ass, but most people weren't responsible enough to not op their noob friend who just came onto IRC, and it seemed easier to have less ops then to come to the channel one day and find somebodies noob friend had banned everybody, set some '1337' chanflags, or, more commonly, changed the topic to some lame url to an upside down christmas tree eating a goldfish or something (removing the useful information put there by reno / gwil / etc).

So in summary, ops have been a bit lacking since Gwil went on his big trip, and I was thinking the other day about adding a couple of ops, but as for mass ops, I vote no.

Sorry, I just noticed what Nickleplate posted and I have to say, WHAT??

1. Gwil thing was a joke you never got, and you came back after that.

2. You can't google, in #triv to give you an advantage as it is a test
of quickfire memory from the last time the question came around.

3. IRC channel was not, nor ever has been secret, there have been
numerous threads about it any some members, including my good self used
to pimp it in their signatures to GET people to join.

0/3 correct: Go sit in the corner.

[/end 3 day late reply] It just bugged me.
