it's fixed now.
for anyone that started using the buggy beta and wants to convert back, remember to 'update sdk content', or it won't be able to find hammer.

You mean, the regular version of Hammer (non-beta) is working perfectly now? I'll have to try that when I get home.

They are aware of this problem. Check the FAQ's over at the VERC. They fixed the steamapp error and subsequently shut down many peoples graphics, including mine. I have already completely deleted and re-installed steam this morning, but have not started the editor yet, as I have too much to do to devote a whole day to seeing if Valve got their act together.

Whatever happened to just Valve issuing a recall patch, that just
resets everything? In this case, Valve's just going dig
themselves a nice little grave by the time they actually fix
everything...

So, is it fixed now?
Why don't they issue an update news at steampowered?
Or is Valve just too embarassed at admitting such a huge mistake?

What is this "normal" and "beta" sdk that you guys keep refering
to? I've never heard any reference from Valve or anybody about
two different versions...

I reverted to the normal one and I get the same symptoms as G.Ball - I can only see the lightmap grid. Textures don't seem to load into the editor. But hey, at least I can do batch compiles again!...
... Too bad my maps keep crashing RAD.

Well the beta now seems to be the normal. No longer a beta. I dont know if there is a way to revert back to the old hammer now.

Well, I guess we can still map...we just can't compile the maps until later.

You just need to refresh the SDK content before running Hammer, and that error should go away.

I am holding off compiling any maps until the coast is cleared.

nice screenie juim....i like the ambience....
something i noticed on my last compile after closer inspection....1 zero area child patch i had forgotten about, because it had never been an issue before with gameplay, or framerates, or anything....but i got to thinking, could that old "blemish" be opened by a rewrite of more specific vrad code, or some such phenom? plausible?...but not probable in my estimation.....but ive been wrong before....

Doc, is your map huger than huge? i ask, because now i remember what caused it when i had the same crash on the final lightface. it was something to do with max_patches, and i only got the right error when i switched to using a batch file. that was in hl1, though, but by moving your func_details to world, you've also culled any faces that were behind the details, removing them from the patch count(if hl2 still has it).
it could be a similar error, but i reckon your map would need to be pretty big, or have tons of very small scale textures.

I wouldve posted this in recently b0rked thread, but you can't reply to topics over 4 months old. This thread will do.
Steam has borked itself....or something.
I went to open Hammer today...and low and behold, it has deleted
itself! I went to look for the physical file, and it was gone...along
with vtex.exe and other crucial editing executables. Have any of you
experienced this? How do I get my executables back that valve
apparently
felt like deleting? It is all updated, and I am not using outdated
shortcuts......ironically, this is right after I get done reading the
thread about how you guys like/dislike steam, and I was
thinking....Steam is like the best thing to ever happen to games....I
have never had a problem with it....now this......ugh.
Thanks for any help, guys :-(
Edit:
egh..........nevermind. I just used GCFScape to copy the bin folder over from the GCF files and it works now.

I know curiosity killed the cat, but why does Steam have to be on to run Hammer- whats the logic or reason?

To run it I believe you can shut steam off.
To get to the on link, you need steam to be on.
Seems like there should be a shortcut option though.
Sadly, when I tried, I kept getting my Hammer 3.5 instead.
I was so confuzzed, I just gave up and used Steam.
