it's fixed now.

for anyone that started using the buggy beta and wants to convert back, remember to 'update sdk content', or it won't be able to find hammer.

You mean, the regular version of Hammer (non-beta) is working perfectly now? I'll have to try that when I get home.

It's fixed.

I can get the camera to render only in 3D Lightmapped Grid. The only flaw with it is that I can't SEE MY FREAKING TEXTURES!111`~~~1.

They are aware of this problem. Check the FAQ's over at the VERC. They fixed the steamapp error and subsequently shut down many peoples graphics, including mine. I have already completely deleted and re-installed steam this morning, but have not started the editor yet, as I have too much to do to devote a whole day to seeing if Valve got their act together.

Whatever happened to just Valve issuing a recall patch, that just
resets everything? In this case, Valve's just going dig
themselves a nice little grave by the time they actually fix
everything...

I'm assuming this was the tiny patch issued earlier. I just rebooted and the SDK started updating again (a fairly hefty patch too by the looks of things - starting at 84%). Maybe they fixed it...

I've resorted to the beta SDK btw.

So, is it fixed now?

Why don't they issue an update news at steampowered?

Or is Valve just too embarassed at admitting such a huge mistake?

I'm guessing that theres been no update. If you stop and restart steam, (at least letely) it re-downloads starting at 84 % everytime, well it does for me anywho.

Ah right. That would explain it. Nevertheless, I don't seem to be having any problems. Is it just the normal SDK or the beta as well?

What is this "normal" and "beta" sdk that you guys keep refering
to? I've never heard any reference from Valve or anybody about
two different versions...

I reverted to the normal one and I get the same symptoms as G.Ball - I can only see the lightmap grid. Textures don't seem to load into the editor. But hey, at least I can do batch compiles again!...

... Too bad my maps keep crashing RAD.

Well the beta now seems to be the normal. No longer a beta. I dont know if there is a way to revert back to the old hammer now.

Valve have acknowledged the bug at last, so there should be a fix soon:
http://www.chatbear.com/board.plm?a=viewthread&t=239,1135982806,24724&id=943982&b=4986&v=flatold

And G.Ball, Valve released a beta of the SDK a while ago - just add -beta sdk to the Steam shortcut and then run it... (if you dare...)

Source SDK started updating for me at around 94% a few hours ago. Now I get the "System cannot find the file specified" error when trying to run hammer/modelviewer.

You just need to refresh the SDK content before running Hammer, and that error should go away.

That seems to have helped. Hammer starts, and the 3D window works. I'll try compiling later to see if that's fixed yet.

Just compiled B3 of my map and I think it looks good. Not only did it take almost 2 hours less to compile, but the FPS have doubled (or rather, returned to their original levels before all this HDR/beta crap). I think they have just rolled back to the original version for now. One problem I did notice was:

My original water texture is missing. I had to re-texture it so it would show up.

nice screenie juim....i like the ambience....

something i noticed on my last compile after closer inspection....1 zero area child patch i had forgotten about, because it had never been an issue before with gameplay, or framerates, or anything....but i got to thinking, could that old "blemish" be opened by a rewrite of more specific vrad code, or some such phenom? plausible?...but not probable in my estimation.....but ive been wrong before....

I'm able to compile a small test map successfully. No reason to avoid it Satch, might as well use it while it still works. If anything does go wrong, I'm sure someone as meticulous as yourself has backups

ok....Uncle Al's update.....

vrad.....has basicly righted itself again.....something in the func_details code that i had going has changed, i theorize....when all else failed, and i got pissy, i said "screw it", and sent all my details back to world, viola! ....now that its righted, ive gotten rid of any said bugs, ie, zero area children (sounds like my old boss... ) the only thing i can figure is that something in the vrad/entity code changed drasticly enough to piss off the rad tools.....source must be a bit "tempermental" ....

Doc, is your map huger than huge? i ask, because now i remember what caused it when i had the same crash on the final lightface. it was something to do with max_patches, and i only got the right error when i switched to using a batch file. that was in hl1, though, but by moving your func_details to world, you've also culled any faces that were behind the details, removing them from the patch count(if hl2 still has it).

it could be a similar error, but i reckon your map would need to be pretty big, or have tons of very small scale textures.

actually no fishman, its prolly my smallest creation to date....hl1 included. i wish i had documented all the little errors along the way of this better....might have been nice to use the data to piece it up.....its my curiosity now, wont let me leave it till they fix it...........but my map is error free, as far as the usual bs goes bud. ie, max_patches, area portas, etc....cleanest ive done in a couple of years, because im actually gonna try and finish this one....

I wouldve posted this in recently b0rked thread, but you can't reply to topics over 4 months old. This thread will do.

Steam has borked itself....or something.

I went to open Hammer today...and low and behold, it has deleted
itself! I went to look for the physical file, and it was gone...along
with vtex.exe and other crucial editing executables. Have any of you
experienced this? How do I get my executables back that valve
apparently
felt like deleting? It is all updated, and I am not using outdated
shortcuts......ironically, this is right after I get done reading the
thread about how you guys like/dislike steam, and I was
thinking....Steam is like the best thing to ever happen to games....I
have never had a problem with it....now this......ugh.

Thanks for any help, guys :-(

Edit:

egh..........nevermind. I just used GCFScape to copy the bin folder over from the GCF files and it works now.

Hitting "Refresh SDK Content" in the SDK window does exactly that, if anyone else has the same problem.

To run it I believe you can shut steam off.

To get to the on link, you need steam to be on.

Seems like there should be a shortcut option though.

Sadly, when I tried, I kept getting my Hammer 3.5 instead.

I was so confuzzed, I just gave up and used Steam.
