I mapped my school! Yeah, this is getting repetitive  . Anyways, its a great map. I will upload screens ASAP (a week at the most).

http://www.snarkpit.com/maps.php?map=640

Has anyone else tried this? Anyone who has, pls post here. I'd like to meet fellow school-mappers.

I've always considered doing it, however since I'm not in school anymore its kinda hard. I guess I could go around with a camera sometime and just pretend to be a student or something, or maybe even ask permission, but to be honest I don't really think its worth it anymore. My mates who played CS always wanted me to make it for that.

school maps, done before, all to my knowledge, done poorly.

schools by design do not have fragability.

as far as practice, i say go for it, i think it would be cool, but don't expect many parties.

Screenshots plz. Also, your site has an awful lot of pop up action going on. Probably will keep me from checking there for your future maps, but thats just me. Still though, would like to see the screenies.

Someone Mapped Columbine.. I think its a bit tacky, but the map proved to be very interresting to run around in.

I'll see if I can find the map again for those of you who may want it.

Orph...I made a school map loosely based on an old Action Quake 2 map a fair few years back. It was the second map I made so you will have to excuse some of the crudeness. Surprisingly though, it got fairly good reviews back in the day

Sorry about the fileplanet link - i'm working on getting all my maps onto my other webspace (as soon as I get the web design out of the way  )

Just so everyone knows, de_ths has excellent fraggability. Its a very open school, unlike most American schools (or so I'm lead to beleive). Personally I prefer the DoD version, cos theres control points all over the map so the entire school sees BLOOD.

Will upload screens in... 4 days. Sorry about the wait, im just not able to upload till the 19th.

school sucks (not the maps) well some  , i once tried doing my house but it is very dificalt i fialed  ,but if you put the effert in it is very posible any way my house is not bigg enough for any more than 4 players for a decent sized decent match. If you try i would draw out a plan in detail if you are uber into mapping you should measure each room but thats is just silly unless you realy want to get it right make it realy impresive  ,but then again it wouldnt look quite as good to other people unless they have seen your house to compare it with.

Only problem with school mapping personally, is your school will have to have been built on a hill or something, so you get some nice height in your map. Wide walking areas and 'play' areas are even better.

Don't really get why it would need to be built on a hill mate, most schools have multiple floors so that provides plenty of vertical variation.

All looks quite good ... but what the hell is that thing in the lower right corner ... ? :leper:

If that should represent sand or something ... find some other textures for that mess.

Well I prefer outdoor maps to indoor maps, so the height variation would probably not be there with a flat line map.

that thing in the lower-right corner is... woodchips. i know, its a crap texture, ill do a better one soon. most of the "realistic" textures were taken with a friends phone camera, and the pictures all turned out saturated.

also, most of the outdoor textures had to be scaled 4x. this was due to exceeding max_patches (i also had to use large chop values... anyone know how to avoid this pls tell me)

My bro did just that. Sometimes he and others play Hl on school computers, so once upon a time he sneaked the teacher model into the right folder and played as a cruel old man with white beard and hair. So when the other dudes saw the model, they recognized the teacher at first look. Must have been great fun

Ive thought of another school-related mapping thing. Making maps based on subjects you have in school! Ive got a few already:

de_ffraction : Physics map. de_ffraction -> diffraction. Lasers, diffraction gratings, anything to do with the light part of physics. I think its on my homepage...

de_momentum : Another physics map. The whole map is on an air-table, so you have to use your momentum! anyone who has done high school physics will prolly appreciate this map.

cs_specialist : Specialist Maths. 3d vectors, unit circle, Captain Carpus' spaceship (question in a test... dont ask) and ripoffs of the matrix reloaded (again dont ask).

de_mathstudies : Maths Studies (for you non-aussies out there, Calculus). Terrorists have to bomb the dy/dx or First Principles, both of which are intensely hated by most maths students. Theres also matricies to hide behind, but dont fall into the evil specialist maths pit of death!

Hope this gives some mappers out there some ideas. You can find these maps (Im pretty sure) on my website http://wil5on.250free.com

Use "-scale #" generallly I use 3 depending on what map I'm mapping. It essentially brightens the world, this will mean it will need less lights than your putting in at the moment, it looks like your using quite alot, cut back, you may need very few. Will bring the patches back down to a normal level.

Schools will never look that great in HL, the engine can't take the large areas. HL2 will be good for schools

I'd suggest not making your own school but perhaps stealing the layout from Xcom- Apocalypse to make it a tad more interesting....

A school can be a fraggable map if some good effort and though went into making the map that way. Why not

If you put too much effort into making it fraggable, it wont be authentic. The fraggability of the school map depends on the actual school its based on. If you put lots of effort and thought into making it authentic, and the school is fraggable, you end up with a map both authentic and fun to play in, and you can become an object of worship for all your peers.

Look what I stumbled on to a school map, what a coincidence! I myself am also working on a school map, well actually it's a whole school mod.

I'm creating it with a couple of friends for my final 'computer science' project. It should become a singleplayer story, with zombies off course. Well let me not plague you with the details.

The basics are, there's three people working on it. Me and 2 friends, one is a modeler the other, well does stuff and I'm the coder. We did create a couple of weapons as a test, but first we're trying to get the map done. (we created fists, that pretty much do the same as the crowbar).

Uhm yeh, well since this isn't my topic (and I won't bother to start one neither) here's one screenie (and I'll stop poluting this topic

http://home.kabelfoon.nl/~bruce/hldeath/kantine_bruce_compare.jpg
(url, because an image would polute  )

Ok, that's it...it's not much and it's pretty empty, but the final version should contain a lot of mood. Oh btw, because US/UK school systems differ, I'll just say that we are 17/18 years old.
