It's actually pasta, not noodles, that is used in lasagna. Noodles are more of an Asian style, where pasta is Italian. That should make it a bit clearer for people.
I don't think so sir. Pasta is more of the string variety that Mr. Reno mentions. Noodles are different.

I'd always called lasagna a pasta, as it is, as far as I'm aware, an italian dish. Pretty much every one of these varities...

...I would call a pasta, not a noodle. I guess it differs around the
world though - noodles are pretty specifically the string type stuff in
the UK.

You are aware that the Italian stole the pasta/noodle from China, right?

But I feel you nailed it. Its more of a colloquialism. In the states, noodles predominantly are hollow things that hold the sauces within. Pasta are stringed affairs that grasp the sauces from without.

This belies the concept because of the popularity of the Raman Noodle. Which is an endless mound of stringy pasta.

God, I am so confused.

I know the food type orginated from China, but I've never really
imagined dishes such as lasagna being of Chinese origin. In the UK,
lasagna, spaghetti, penne, fusili, etc... are all very much marketed as
types of Italian pasta, not Chinese noodles. My interest in food
doesn't go beyond eating the stuff, so I've never been inclined to
research the origins of different pasta/noodle types

You're confusing my intent. I am not saying that the lasagna noodle is a Chinese dish. The sauces make it Italian.

I love to put macaroni in my chicken soup. This doesn't make it a chicken soup noodle, its still only macaroni.

The noodles may have originated in China, but the dish is definitely Italian.

I would like to say, due to this 56k connection, the Snarkpit loads so slow, that I actually lose my place while scanning pages. Actually, I lose interest so you'll have to excuse my random patterns for posting. I don't know whats wrong exactly but sometimes this site just stops loading. Am I the only one who has this problem?

Yeah, and with HL2DM not receiving much love from Valve (just some new maps since release but no/few new assets to use), all the new assets are going into the CS and DoD pool. I used some CS assets in two of my recent levels - I only used half a dozen simple props and it increased filesize by 4mb...yet people will already have those props on their PCs.

A flying visit I trust Gwil? Hope you're doing well man! How long you got left on your little hiatus?

Would be awesome if they'd open it all up for use by any mod, but I
guess that would mean games reading from more GCF files and might have
some performance issues. Bit too much hassle to expect people to copy
and paste existing files about - no choice but to distribute them with
the map really

I voted 6-Other.

It seems like quite a number here haven't created a level for HL2 (or HL1) for quite a while, if at all. Snarkpit is/was seen as a resource full of talented people who practiced what they preached, which lent more weight to their comments - is this no longer the case do you think?

When was the last time everyone contributed with adding actual new finished content (whether that be a level, tutorial, or whatever), not just posting on the forum?

Oh, there's still some people mapping, but this takes longer with HL2
maps I think. Snarkpit is just changing a bit. Content is coming, just
not as frequent right now.

There has been a debate as to whether or not CSS content was legal to
use for HL2 maps and vice versa, but I think it's just fine to use it.
But, just as with HL, it needs to be included. Not everyone has all the
mods you took content from, and that's exactly the same situation as
before HL2.

Also keved, new maps are coming up... they're coming...

</DIV></DIV>

Perhaps this is the root of the issue. Consider, Snarkpit has a reputation for "Informative opinions through experience" What if this is not the path to true longevity? What if the true path to success is a combination of "Player/Mapper" viewpoints? Since I became an active member around here, I have been informed more than once that my opinion of a map is about as worthless as dog mess in the neighbors backyard. No one even considers the fact that I know what I am talking about because my profile remains void. What if I chose to keep it that way just to spite everyone?

IMO what is missing most is the camaraderie that used to be present. I am not talking about ganging up on a new member camaraderie (which seemed very prevalent when I first posted), I am talking about the kind where if a comment is made, very little if any explanation was required to be taken seriously.

I personally feel that if people would take an opinion as willingly as its given and leave the past profiles alone, the moral would elevate a bit. Call it my imagination but I am betting that quite a few people simply do not comment on maps because the reception for them is spotty at best.
I personally keep track of my profile hits. I notice a dramatic upswing every time I comment openly on a new map. This is not a good sign.

By the way its is interesting to notice that from talking about orpheus and by the end the first page (mine anyway) you were talking about noodles and pasta and lasange.

@Underdog: I guess I missed the harsh reactions on your comments. Maybe
you take things too serious here, or I just can't find those comments?

Anyway, I don't think it's going wrong here. I've had some great
feedback on my current WIP mudanchee, ReNo let me playtest on the
Snarkpit server a few times and that was a good and fun time, with nice
and helpfull comments afterwards on IRC. Not everyone that commented
has maps in their profile as far as I know, but that doesn't matter.
Comments on gameplay and 'just' opinions are valuable.

And I haven't seen anything outright harsh or insulting lately... maybe
you and I just check the opposite sides of this site when we're
on-line?

As for profile hits... you'll get them when you're active. The more
comments you make, the more links to your profile there are. I think
it's only natural that people check your profile. I mean, I know that I
like to check out what maps someone made, just out of interest. And
when someone made maps that have outstanding lighting, I know I can
take his comments about lighting more serious. That doesn't mean anyone
elses suggestions are worthless, but it helps you pinpoint the strong
points of people, and learn from them. Not a bad thing, I think.

EDIT: You stole precious mapping time from me while I was writing this post! You... you... Underdog!

Give me 3 weeks and I'll be mapping again. Once uni is over I'm hoping to start work on a small single-player game for HL2.

Yeah, there really is a shortage of single-player maps for HL2. Tons of DM maps, and many of them very high quality, but expertly-made SP maps are very rare indeed.

I recently met another Dutch mapper that made a HL2SP mappack containing
4 maps. It's City17 themed, with lots of Combine to battle and somewhat
cramped to move around but besides that, it's a nice play and for a
first experience with Hammer and a non-HL mapping background, I think
it's very good done.

You can download the mappack here: http://halflife2.filefront.com/file/HalfLife_2_Leons_SP_Map_Pack;39881

He's currently busy with a mappack containing 10 maps. So, there is SP stuff being made. But indeed just not a lot...

HL2 is a poor game. I don't care if people argue- I have no desire to replay the game or map for it in all honesty. HL1 made me want to make really advanced and cool effects. Now its all about physics, and any cool effect can already be done.
