I feel really badly that the last competition flopped. So many, put so much time and effort into their maps too.

To this day, I dunno why it never completed.

As far as organizational skills. I organized one of the biggest HL1DM maps to ever see near completion. In the end, it died just when HL2 was released. It was 90-99% finished.

I don't want another one of my projects to die. I expect a site wide assistance program to see to it that it doesn't.

At least, thats my hope.

i don't see any point in making a half-hearted attempt. nor do i see any point in putting my current maps on hold for a month, just so that i can make a fancy room.

i'm not against it, but i don't imagine i'll be joining in.

Would you be interested in a peer position?

I know that its going to come up but, with my connection its not going to be a position that I want. I would however like people of your caliber to referee this thing.

standing behind a tree?

or an open vote, possibly a thread where people say what map they think should win, and why, would be better than an anonimous poll, or a select few judges. maybe have a few experienced people to oversee the thread, to ensure the votes have been cast in favour of the map, and not the mapper.

I meant peer as = to overseer.

The problem with a vote is, the polling system will only accommodate 6 votes so it cannot be used.

An overseer would collect the votes delivered to him, probably by the PM system and make sure that each person votes only once and that the vote is as fair as possible.

IE, I couldn't vote for a Doc Rock map now if I had to with a gun to my head.

People like you, honest enough IMO, could overseer the competition, and in so contribute to the competition in a way thats important, but not tie you down to an editor for a month.

Course, we could have a poll on possible overseers. shrugs

I wouldn't turn down the position, I would do my part but people would have to understand my handicap with 56k and not be rude about my slow responses.

we've established we are going to be judging on creativity and originality. this is going to be a mapping art contest. how do they judge artwork? I dont know, but that is how we should go about it.
I am defitnely in and i think this is a great idea and should go forward. we should pull together quickly sort out judges and begin!

i think the judges should be those we all agree make great maps.

That would be a worse stipulation than my saying all the VMFs should be released.

I don't make great maps, and I think me qualified to judge.

I cannot speak for anyone else, but I can think of quite a few qualified people who have little or no released maps. s**t, I have 9 of them and all s**t.

I do think we need at least 3 overseers to break any ties and whatnot.

i meant an open vote in a thread, where each person gets one post, to say what map they think should win, and why. maybe even have a vote on 1st, 2nd and 3rd place, with someone doing some fancy number crunching to work out the final results.

i also think there's a lot to be said in favour of limiting the filesize of the entries.

I agree. To a point.

I just downloaded a 23 meg monster this morning... To prove a point but, I wouldn't want to do that 20-30 times. Took me over 2 hours.

But, I am going to use 100% stock textures, and I hope no custom models (one never knows) but my idea is large enough that I am not to sure how big the file size will be.

I would hate to break the rules but I would hate worse to cut my file size down and ruin the map.

This all assumes that my paltry skills can bring to fruition my idea

Also, many have expressed an interest in custom textures. Those puppies add up fast in a zip. Even wadincluded.

Is there no-one kind enough to mail a CD full of the maps for Orph (if there are a lot of entries)

I'd do it but I get the feeling airmail is distinctly expensive for a man with no money

All jocularity aside. I can manage, as long as courtesies are observed. I have downloaded as much as 300 megs with 56k before. Course, that was before I had DSL and knew no better.

If people would keep their zips properly made and no unnecessary files added (I have downloaded zips with BMPs inside. Which was a bitch to say the least)

I want this to come to fruition and I'll deal with the files with no complaints (within reason)

So, how close are we to coming to a decision guys?

Post your wants and we will use the most common denominators for the good of the whole.

Prefabland was, at its peak, had a massive amount of hits daily. Its now a defunct website. It died for many of the same reasons Snarkpit is experiencing recently. Think on that awhile.
I think ameture mapping in general is dying. Most of the Quake/HL/UT/etc mappers have either (1) gone pro, or (2) moved on to other things, and very few noobs have stepped up to take their place in the new engines. Without exception, within the last few months all of the mapping forums I regularly visit have basically died.

No, thats pretty much decided. The entire site will vote. I feel that publicly would be best but privacy is sometimes what people prefer.

The overseers will determine that each member votes once. We will more than likely have a 1st, 2nd and 3rd place with possibly an honorable mention for a loser that lost by a minuscule amount from the top 3 slots.

IMO, the only two things we need to focus a decision upon is:
  • when to begin.
  • and how long till it ends.
I would also like to request that 3 trustworthy members who are NOT ENTERING, collect any and all beta versions to make sure that they fall into the prescribed terms of the contest. This way, No one making a map will be burdened with the time it takes to sift through them and to send a message to anyone who's map is not acceptable so that they can edit it a bit.

If we cannot find 3 members who are not entering, then we will resort to members who want the job, are responsible and can cope with building and overseeing.

Fisheye already stated that he will not be entering, but didn't exactly turn down the overseer position.

Anyone else? All I ask is, don't be offended if someone in the contest protests a candidate for overseer. Its the contest entr?es decision methinks.

Over a day and 1/2 and no replies... Not even derrogatory ones.

OK.... I posted this reply at Mapcore. I figure I can do so here too for anyone still fuzzy on the contest guidelines......
OK, this is how I see it coming off. Use this as a guide.

Everyone should know Mazemaster. I am sure that Nick won't mind me using him as an example. Anyway, you should know him. If you don't, do so cause he is one of the best out there.

OK, pretend that Mazemaster is making Island_17 today, for this contest. He makes the entire map that you can see from the top of the light house. You are restricted to the top of the light house. You say to yourself, "Man, this is one fine looking map" End of story. Don't attempt to over complicate the contest.

Now, expand that to whatever you want to make. I don't care if you made the Eiffel tower, or the pyramid of Giza.. You're only restricted to your imagination.

If you think this is a contest for creating a usable map, forget it. This is 100% creativity, of the useless kind.

Now, go vote, and join up... YOu know you want to.

Without giving any details about my entry, the answer is basically "Yes" CJ.

I figure, even if I fail, it will show me how much I have yet to learn... And unfortunately, so will everyone else.

But essentially, yes, a room/area/zone of any size.

If I'm allowed to do a HL1 map I'll participate. I've tried to learn
HL2 mapping, but it somehow always puts me off... It lacks the glamour.
One area with possibly custom textures coming up. One question though:
Single- or Multiplayer or sort of test map style without enemies or
guns?

I think it's really whatever type you want it to be. i don't remember seeing a restriction on single or multi, or even mod for that matter. there was a request we only use default textures and models though. I guess that's good for giving people who don't/can't use custom textures/models or create their own a chance against those who can create their own. of course, I still want to be able to use simple models. I want to be able to make pipes with models cuz... it's hard to do that with brushes or displacements!

I'm strongly opposed to any restrictions on custom content - we have enough cookie cutter HL2 style maps out there already without encouraging more of them by forcing the use of standard resources.

agreed. i have no problem making my own models, but textures are a slight problem for me.. we should make a list of sites with custom content. if the resulting entries end up being huge, i'd be willing to send orph a cd with all the maps if we need to do that.

You are a fantastic mapper, but a degree, does not make an architect be.

The whole member roster will be judges, you can be one of the overseers I suppose. It will require that you download and make sure all entr?es are within the guidelines.

Technically, you having a green name, qualifies you since, you would have access to the maps where a normal member would not so..

You can judge, if you like.
