Hello there,

Some of you may know that I'm working on a Java-based sudoku solver. (Project info can be found at http://sudokusolve.sourceforge.net)

I'm very close on releasing v0.2 of the program, but there's still one last thing to deal with (the fear of every programmer): optimisation. I wondered what the influence of CPU power is on the solving algorithm, so I started this thread to ask for a simple request.

I've written a small tool which does one sudoku solve, and shows a simple dialog containing the amount of milliseconds which were needed.

Let me know how many milliseconds it took, and post your CPU type/version too. Please run this tool on a 'clean' environment (don't run any background tasks like music, messaging or e-mail whilst using the tool. It will only take a couple of seconds - and thats the worst case scenario.)

Of course, a recent Java Runtime Installation is needed.

Note: I know what some of you might be thinking. Running unknown executables from teh interweb : noes. And you're perfectly right. You'll have to believe me this doesn't contain any malicious code. You can examinate the JAR file this executable was built from here:

Not to alarm anyone, but I did have to restart after running that! But them my computer is exceedingly crap.

Why is my dinky little laptop running this so much faster than those other beefier systems? Is this directly proportional to processing power, or are there other complicating factors?
