If a trap contest goes ahead, I'll definitely give it a go. Vanilla HL1/2 SP is the way to go I think, we dont need any fancy weapons (or textures or models for that matter) to make a trap.

i think this is the general consensus. now we just need an admin to make it official: post a thread with the rules (purpose, dimensions, limitations,...) + timespan, post on front page, post on other forums, etc
These words are my diaries screaming out loud

You wouldn't believe how much flack I got in the last competition for my thinking along these lines. IMO, just being part of something like this is in itself a joy. So much so that having any further enticement such as prizes and whatnot shouldn't be a necessity.

However, I was in the minority for this thinking. Hence, the prize option in this event.

Okay, sense the trap theme seems to be the most popular, I have to say I approve

Most maps I see nowadays don't make much use of some of the things that make a map a map, and not just a box with stuff in it.

Traps, weather (other than dust), OMGWTF moments, etc, these all tend to be left out, leaving combat oriented maps, or the generic dusty desert area...

It seems to me, that it might be idea to extend the theme (or keep it in mind for the next one) to other lesser used devices that can give a map that extra touch

Orph, if you registered your version on the steam and you can use
someones DSL then you can DL HL2 by only using steam. I did that on
my second install. It works even without the DVD, since you've
registered the CD key to your username. But good luck. We'll be

This is interesting. Yes, my original is mine. Bought and paid for. So.. I could download HL2?

Question is.. Can I do it in advance? I mean, even if I got it, this poor excuse for a PC might not even run it. Can I burn the download to disk/DVD and install it on my new system when I build it?

I'd so like to have it already for installation when I need it.

I'd have thought you can do that. Isn't there an option to back-up to CD/DVD? If you do that for the games you want then you can use the CDs to put it onto the new system.

Yes, there is a backup option hidden somewhere in the steam games menu. Just click a fully installed game to add it to a backup file. Be prepared for a few GBs, though!

wedding passed peacefully and essays/seminar presentations are out the

consensus on what the competition is going to be? IE, we are doing a trap map?

I am very busy today but will go through this thread tonight and try to make heads/tails of this.

Sadly, with making runs back to back, I have been really tired upon my return home.

Last night it was late and I but scanned this site before retiring for the night.

I will endeavor to be more available.

My hopes still remain high for obtaining a machine big enough to run the bigger engines, soon.

(rubs eyes after sifting through all the tripe contained in this thread :heee: )

OK, I by no means have the most time, thats a given. I however have the least pressing things to do since my only time consumption thing is working at delivering busses. The admin here have much more important things. Most notably school.

I will volunteer to run this thing, with no objections of course. I will be somewhat limited until I get my new machine, but I will be here as often as possible on this one until then.

The central idea seems to be that most want a trap theme. No one seems overly concerned whether its HL1 and/or HL2, so that simplifies it some. The only notable exception being that HL1 is old enough to not be taken as seriously. I however believe that given this, it would make a well made HL1 trap more likely to win because of the handicap... However I may be alone in this thinking. (If you recall, I firmly believe that its harder to succeed with HL1 than HL2.)

The only other notable event was, that it seems less important to anyone else that we have a novice category. I bow to the majority.

So the next question that seems logical is, should we have another poll to decide exactly the guidelines of this trap theme? I mean, I accept that HL1 and HL2 are welcome and that both single player and deathmatch are fine but that leaves a hell of a big gray area IMO.

Should this trap be contained within a map or should the trap be limited to a room? Furthermore, should the entry be an entire map, or just a room?

The vote is 22 for and only 1 against so the popularity is there. All we need is a bit of serious people to post some definitive idea for this to proceed.

I await your comments eagerly.

The best things in life, aren't things.

Neither. A small area, be it a silo or a room with several adjacent corridors and rooms.

Well, imo this is the best compromise. Plus not knowing where the trap is nor what will set it off is half the fun.

My son and I came up with the guass trap in my map "Deja_vu_2"

It was great fun watchin folks stumble into it and dying horribly. PLUS you could shoot them via slits in the wall if you liked without them knowing where you were.

So very few figured out the trap that no one liked it much. It still was the best trap I ever saw.

I'd say the map should be "entirely about the trap". Whether it's in the middle of a giant hall or pops up unexpectedly after a few calm corridors can be up to the mapper. But what's not directly about the trap itself is decoration and shouldn't be judged to much for the contest. If someone builds the coolest map in the world and only puts a lava pit with a pentagram-shaped activator button on the wall it should still loose IMO.

I find it ok to have as little categories as possible. I'd love to see some physics traps (chances are I might try one myself) but if people still have unique ideas for a HL1 map it's probably good enough to beat lame ravenholm clones easily.
Why snark works.

my person thoughts on the rules for a trap map compo are as following.
  • The map can be as big as you want it, but it should be at your discression what a reasonable size is.
  • The maps main feature must be a trap, trap being interpreted as you want. judgement is based on the creativity, fun elements, and genral quality of the trap.
  • It is the judges decision if what you made is indead a trap, so you cannot strech the word out of context
  • Visual appeal shouldn't be directly judged. (although visual elements will always further engourge the player into the game which can effect how fun the trap is.)
  • HL1 and HL2 catagories, 3 winners each, and 1 overall winner not included in the caragories. so there is a total of 7 winners. (either 3 Goldsrc and 4 source or viceversa)
