How many people here own/play DOD/s?
Names, server ip and advice would be welcome.
I'd kinda like to get back to basics. I had much more fun playing 5 years ago. Mapping was just the next phase of fragging and perhaps if I frag again, I'd map again.
With that thought, if you guys could give some advice on strategy and what servers you haunt, I'd play as often as I can stand it. (remember my problem with motion sickness)

Stay with your squad - 3 people taking on an MG position and a rifleman is more likely to win!
Don't run into the game like DM - check every corner meticulously, cover your teammate advancing on a flag.
Try an alternative class - and try alternative approaches, be it the
path taken on spawning, or the nature of your approach. You can learn a
lot by playing as an Allied rifleman (I loathe this class) when you a
German MP44 whore.
Learn to use grenades - rifle grenades can be fired at close range and
picked up with the "e" key, for a short fuse. Learn the timings and
revel in glory when you clear a room with 3 frags using this tactic.
Play as the Machine Gun - identify choke points - these are often key
routes for lighter classes advances, or represent the antithesis of
enemy thinking. If they're all using the street, why not use the back
alleys to advance on flag #1/#2.
Team orders given at spawn? Follow them!

Thanx for the info. You haven't any particular haunt Gwil?
Perhaps someone here has enough bandwidth to run a small server we all can join. lag wouldn't matter if we were all in there just learning.
BTW, if you guys play under a different name, post it.

I play mostly on the "ARCOR" servers (theyres around 10 of them - ARCOR
#1 etc) - I think they're German, otherwise it's [DA-UK].
I dunno how you might hold up on your new connection, so I urge some US
players to come forward! Usually the boys from the States who do play
ping from 70-135, or high 200+ pings.

You can actually set the thing to search countries specifically.
Sadly, I set it all the way up to 600, and Europe and it found no servers.
Perhaps I did something wrong.

I own it, and like it alot, but sadly don't play it that often.
The MG42 is addictive for camping types, but I like to move around. Its too easy to rack up kills with it. The rocket launcher is nasty but you move too slow while carrying it, making you an easy target. I'm not much on the machine guns, I like to stick with the sniper rifle, though the German K98k is almost as accurate. There is also something satisfying about killing someone with a shovel.
It also helps to speak to your German teammates in their own tongue.
"Du bist mein fleischschild", meaning "You are my meat shield".
(I think that's right).

I'll probably break down and play DoD: S sometime. (IT SHOULD HAVE CAME WITH MY $80 PACKAGE)
I still play DoD every once in awhile, but it's very difficult when the debris sprites are replaced by large black squares (yes, I've redownloaded the GCF file many times).
Most of the time I'm getting shot, I just see a black square where the person is ... sure I'll shoot the square, but I can never tell where the head is. And It's ten times worse if they're proned.
As for strategy, I don't usually do what Gwil is describing. For some reason on almost any server I connect to, no one is trying to get flags. That's always my main focus. So, learn the routes from one flag to another that have the most cover and that allow you to get there the fastest. The best kind of team work is when you meet all your buddies coming from 7 different places towards one flag and just annihilating the opposing team as they run up to stop you. They're all dead, it gets captured and you win.
It also is much easier than going from one point and just pushing through the map.
So, learn the map lay-outs. My method works best in Avalanche
Most of the time, even if I don't have many team mates helping, I'll pop on to a server, start doing this and bam, games over, since the other side is concentrating on killing and not capturing flags a lot of times.
Now, remember this is all DoD, I'm sure all the good players left and started playing DoD: S, so none of this could matter for all I know. If the other team is organized, there's probably no chance of your team winning (unless you are equally organized).
Some level of team work is always needed. Flanking to clear a suppression point is probably something you'd enjoy most, since you're a DM player.
Blame it on Microsoft, God does.

I noticed something on my casual visit to one map. Many of the suggestions I have for Fish's map were present. Perhaps I wasn't so off base with my thinking after seeing it.
So far, I have seen only one DOD/s map. It looked oddly like an old CS/s map I played. Perhaps it had the same author.

i like going at a map deathmatch style. maybe it doesn't work against an organized enemy, but you don't get many of those on public servers. i've found that the player running into a room has more chance of clearing it than the defender has of keeping it, so i like to keep moving. all that hanging around choke points wondering if its's safe to move out only serves to block them for others, and often gets people killed in groups. if you're not too bothered about stats, then running blindly 'round corners can the best way to advance your team. i normally play as assault, because i like having 2 grens, but i'm always on the lookout for dropped weapons that could help with whatever situation i find myself in.

Fnd a server that enforces class limits, cause the game is much more fun if you don't have to face a team totally comprised of assaults and rockets. I also found ff on to be so much more entertaining in DoD, unlike in other games. This is like 4 month old information but the best server I played on was called PAF something, punk ass fraggers, very well admin'ed, US server, ff on, good class limits, and had good players. I dunno if it still exists.
Assault is my class so that's what I know. Get up in people's faces, use the large clip size of the gun to supress and charge into melee range, especially against riflemen who will stand no chance. Liberal use of the second fire melee can extend your offense, conserve bullets, and embarass your enemies, and eventually you can destroy much larger groups of players without having to reload, as generally having to reload is a death sentence. Once you know the map layout you can flank the f**k out of people, especially snipers/mg/rocket, and constant movement between areas is key, especially on Anzio and Avalanche. Flags are important, but generally I find killing the dangerous more stationary classes like mg and breaking defenses as more helpful to the team, pub or not.
And here's some random unhelpful advice: Once you are proficient in both sides' weaponry swap weapons of the same class when you can (like if Allied swap the Thompson for the mp44) as this can throw off the enemy. If they hear a Thompson they will know its an Allied around the corner, but if they hear the mp44 they may not expect you, and that extra second or two can be vital. Plus on a server with admins and friendly fire people will be extra careful not to go firing around corners if they suspect you are on their team

I have it on one of my computers. Find a server with team killing allowed and let the good times roll.
