Well I'm running an AMD64 3000+, which runs at 1.8Ghz, so it isn't much faster.

They call it a 3000+ because it is comparable to a P4 3000.
Looking at it as a 1.8 is a bit misleading. I'd consider it much more than a 1.8.
Perhaps you should read this

It runs at the equivalent of a 3 Ghz chip. The multiple core chips are the ones that are more difficult to decipher.
Blame it on Microsoft, God does.

I stumbled upon this site looking for some
tutorials on hammer. I'm a really, really big newb in the mapping
thing. I only play counter-strike so uhm.. yea, i guess i'm only going
to map for cs. That was my question actually.. the compo's,
what game are we talking about here? :}
And sorry
for not introducing myself lol ^^

Hey Robin, welcome to the Snarkpit

The mapping comps, I imagine, would be based around the Source engine, which would mean HL2, HL2DM, CS:S, DoD:S, etc... Depending on what potential entrants were interested in doing however, it could end up being open to HL1 based maps too, including the original CS. Depends on demand, in other words. When you say CS are you talking about 1.6 or Source, just out of interest?

cs 1.6
I haven't purchased cs:s yet and I don't think i'm gonna. Altough its graphics look awesome...
The reason I asked is just because I haven't come across many hammer recourse/tutorial websites for 1.6
So I'm trying to make sure I don't enter any non-1.6 compo's ^-^

The competition will be short and easy to enter into for all the
flavours of Half-Life - CS:S, DoD, CS, DoD:S, HL, HLDM, HL2 etc etc.
I'm reckoning a timespan of 4 weeks for the final idea. I look forward to
everyones entries - including my own (hoho!).

So which comps have we definitely decided on?
I am totally in favor of the door idea, that can be incredibly useful and complex. I'm less in favor of the texture idea, since more people can't texture than can, but if you can come up with a good enough texture theme that more people could do, I'd be in favor of that.
Others?
Also change the texture of the dock. Docks are rarely tile. -Facepunch

Chain mapping. Everyone picks a room type they want to make, but aren't allowed to say what it is apart from on a master list that the admins have. Each person builds thier map, then its up to the previous person to the current to morph thier section into the current/next. Basically you end out with loads of random contrasting ideas all melding and blending around between one another, similar to the grid idea DrGlass had, but with less obvious gateway transitions.

An interesting point on Mryk's idea is that we can avoid the boring grid idea that most similar projects have. Since we're developing the junctions later ourselves, there are no limits on dimensions...within reason.

Although I like Myrks idea as a community project, it isn't suited to
"competitive" mapping. For now, I will avoid the declaration of a new
competition - it will be "doors" BTW - as i'm not in the right sober
state to post it right now

2nd Feb is the day to look forward to! It shoulda been earlier (ie
today) but I am constrained by a full day timetable for Thursday.
