I noticed this when I was playing Action HL on Steam:
<BLOCKQUOTE dir=ltr style="MARGIN-RIGHT: 0px">
BUILD 2583 SERVER (0 CRC)
Server # 519
No detail texture mapping file: maps/ahl_nocredit_detail.txt
Requesting pldecal.wad from server
Requesting pldecal.wad from server
[/quote]
Is there some way to use 'detail textures' in HL? I think they are small grayscale bitmaps that add additional detail to a texture when seen very close up.

That's kind of a vague statement there. Due to the age of the HL engine, I'm more inclined to think it has more to do with either texture filters or mipmap level settings since it's asking for a text file. I could be wrong though.

I remember seeing bump-mapping in HL somewhere. Possibly by the same guy that did Polyfighter/Canned Tuna/Turbo, randomnine. It looked pretty bad though.

I once made a rock texture where points in the apparent shape of the cliff aligned to the grid, and manually 'bump-mapped' it with brushes. Looks pretty good, really.

...and you did one wall that way, then r_speeds were through the roof?

... And no? The pattern was fairly low-polygon, but making it that way was an amazing step up from a flat wall.

Why didn't you give any of this code to mods?

We did, but the mod got closed (we actually thought HL2 might get released on time).
Although most of the code got deleted when my friend formatted, he's now redoing it for another mod.

The Triforce mod I lead has mirrors coded in, same with a lot of other neat effects that aren't in any of the big released mods that I know of.
