Hi.

What games do you guys think have the best explosions? I played Halo 3 recently and the explosions are pretty cool. I've been disappointed by a lot of explosions in FPS games- e.g. Quake 2 (totally awful, worse than Quake 1), Quake 3 (better but still crap) and more recently, Half-Life 2's were pretty crap. Half-Life 1's explosions were okay but still, not that great.

So what FPS games do you think have the best explosions? Any videos of them online? I think the best explosions I've seen in a game are in Total Annihilation, from when the big guns' shells hit. I wish there was something that cool in an FPS game.

Explosions are hard to do, they are very demanding for games. I did like halo 3's explosions but they looked a little style-ised for me (like a cartoon). Episode 2 had some nice fire effects.

Goldeneye. Still. HL1 is a close second.

Half-life got it easy because it was a simple sprite .... that could go through walls and create all sorts of glitches. Games these days render them properly with particles and smoke effects and all.

Lost Planet, although not an FPS, has probably got some of the nicest explosions I've ever seen.

Those look nice, and I can't think why the game should be disqualified just because the camera hovers behind the player instead of it its head.

Side question: What's the acronym on a Third Person Shooter? 3PS? TPS? I want a report on this, with one of those cover sheets.

World in conflict has some of the most impressive looking explosions i've ever seen in a game. But since you asked about fps explosions, i'd say the ones in call of duty, especially the panzerfaust explosion.

Either the explosions in BioShock (specifically, other Unreal 3 games don't seem to have the same type of explosions) or Crysis. The explosions in Crysis are really nice because they're 3D and all ... but they don't look very realistic. Like the explosions in Call of Duty 2/4 are fairly realistic, but obviously 2D (which is a detraction).

It looks like, maybe, Far Cry 2 is going to have some of the most impressive explosions and fire in an FPS yet.
Blame it on Microsoft, God does.

Since Saving Private Ryan Explosions became more and more "realistic" in games and cinema, meaning black clouds of dirt spreading almost linearly into the air. I heavily dislike HL2's explosions, for example. They're so... dirty.

Goldeneye. Still.
The only other explosions that I can think of that were really impressive, right off the top of my head, were the explosions in Die Hard 2: Die Harder, for the playstation (meaning it's actually part of the game, Die Hard Trilogy.) They were an odd pseudo 2D/3D mix; compromised of only 2D sprites if I recall, but arranged and thrown around that looked incredibly 3D -- for the time, at least.

Agreed ReNo, that looked seriously impressive.

Makes me wonder, what if that style would be implemented in a 2D or top-down shooter? Heh...

I enjoy the more realistic dirty explosions but in singleplayer games give me hollywood explosions any day.
