How about doing a similar thing in the maps forum as we have in the editing help forum where if somebody posts a reply, they can mark it as a mini review of the map, and the thread poster has the opertunity to mark these responses as useful critiques that give the writer more snarkmarks? So if somebody does a nice Orph-syle critique, the thread starter can mark the reply as useful, or maybe even rate the usefulness of the reply, with a higher rating meaning more snarkmarks for the writer. Then if somebody just posts 'it sucks', and marks it as a mini-reivew, the thread starter could simply not mark the reply as useful, or maybe give it a usefulness rating of 0, giving the writer not many snarkmarks. Perhaps this would encourage people do give helpful comments on the maps people post? What does anybody else think of the idea?

I suggested this very thing to Lep a last week sometime, and it sounded as though somthing of the sort was already in the works.

I was planning on doing that, but I'm not so sure about the point in 'rating' them apart from doing a simple bit of moderating...

Ideally, a map would have 3 things- a general discussion in these forums about it, critiques and suggestions on beta versions, and reviews and comments ('GA style reviews', if you must) for finished maps. But meh I'm too busy these days, we'll see

"Orph-Style"

blushes

who'd have guessed...

i would even consider installing a minimal HL for just such a project, PLUS if you could coax lep into re-integrating reviews again i would greatly appreciate it.

but alas, unless one or the other occurs......

If you use this idea Lep, do I get a percentage of the money earned selling everyones email addresses? Since such a feature would obviously draw in more...

No, but it means I stop selling yours. Which is fair considering I came up with the idea when I was remaking this site months ago anyway

you know, Jeff's idea sounds awfully like the one i discussed with you..... months ago

either way, i don't care whom gets credit, as long as its implemented before i die.

i can't help thinking of a famous quote: "Great minds think alike, and so do ours"

i know you meant it as a joke, but it is now my pet project, and i am determined to resurrect the old place.

remember yakman, i had one hell of a time getting you guys to come here, but i finally succeeded, i will there as well

for all the fighting here, one cannot escape the fact that, all of us were drawn here because we all share a commonality.

as far as credit goes, we all think so much alike that it would be impossible to distinguish who came up with what around here.

i know for a fact, i thought up a bunch of stuff that has made it into the snarkpit site as a whole, but i cannot say for a fact that i bothered mentioning them all to lep, i just noticed something i thought of and said "WOW" that looks nice... it never occurred to me one way or the other as to whom came up with it, just that its in use.

bottom-line, snarkpit is a community made up of individuals all pulling basically in the same direction, and thats all that counts.

Hrm, methinks something needs to make our written language a bit better (i.e. in a non-pretentious/long winded manner) at describing meaning, sarcasm, tone etc.

Our written language is perfectly adequate for that task. It's just easier in conversation, and generally people write on forums as though they were conversing.

you know, i have had my wife read some of my posts that have gotten me into hot water here and she understood what i said, with almost no explanation at all, other that to update here on what the topic was about.

i think the inflections that are missing cause some of the problem, but mainly i think its a manner of how we think, according to where we live, i am not just talking about the US and the UK, i am talking also of the deep south vs. the north east, we all think, actually process words differently.

also i think facial expressions, or the lack thereof, cause many communication issues.

most of all, i think the reason we argue most is, people always assume ill intent first (the ones participating in the argument) when they should always assume its a breakdown in communication.

my first question i ask myself when i read something that irks me is "did i just read that, the way he/she wrote it?"

i cannot count 5 times in 5 years i started a fight, its usually always the other way around, and invariably, its because the other side failed to comprehend.

I would have thought that the fact that I was talking about Lep selling email addresses automatically turned my post into a joke, as Lep would not even consider doing this.

I write this as jeff and being of sound mind
