Oh? that sounds pretty cool. Will we ever get to see it here?

As far as art goes with me, I started painting with my 3-year-old tablet I never used but meant to. I've been reading through some books to learn the basics of digital art painting and I spent 10 hours this past weekend working on something I think I can be proud of. It's not finished, but it certainly has met a substantially complete phase that until I get better I may not return to finish. I'm still learning a lot of the basics about lighting and shading. Things I thought I knew until actually trying to figure a scene out.

The scene is not my idea, but I did work on it from a white canvas and no sketches. The point of the particular tutorial in the book was to practice free hand art. Something as an architecture student I don't normally do. (I prefer straight edges ;) ). And also getting used to the way Photoshop deals with brushes and opacity (and pen pressure).

My assignment for graphics due at the start of February. Still a lot of missing details on the ship and the hull texture doesn't look right imo.

Yea I probably could if I worked a bit longer on it. But it was a teaching lesson, and I think I learned what I needed to out of it. On to the next painting...eventually. I'm currently working on my print portfolio I'll be sending off next week to a grad program I'm interested in. I'll reveal that if I get accepted :p

Beyond that though, I finished my paper snark! And I must say, I think it looks a lot better than the one the guy made himself!

I increased the scale just a little bit, so it's more life-size!

I think I'm gonna look for that program that can unwrap models, this took about 6 hours to cut out and glue properly. I placed a stack of pennies in it for weight. It was a lot of fun, and I like displaying it. Friends think it's cool even though they don't know what it is.

Yea, no beak

Spore? I don't recommend it. I was all over it, and couldn't wait for it to get released. That's the "galactic edition" and it was a big let-down. I thought it was going to have so much more gameplay than what ended up being in it. After reaching the space stage, there wasn't much to do that kept it fresh.

Other than the cell stage and the creature creator parts of it, I didn't replay the game too much.

Well, it's true that the game was kind of a let-down, but I still enjoyed it a lot. It was awesome to make creatures and see them back in any phase.

But yeah, the creature phase was still the best one... It's a shame it is so short :uncertain:

Really nice. But I'd like to see it with textures made from photos (or something) from the real world. It's noticeable for me that textures are made out of a white image.

Oh wait:
Textures have to be made from scratch (base colours > details > material noise > grunge).

That's really difficult because it's both hard to find on the web and hard to take your own photos of the Tangara to turn into textures.

But the Tangara's texturing is pretty simple and isn't too difficult to replicate with simple textures.

Damn, looks pretty good Aaron! I'd make the cabin visible through the glass, and then ......

....Put it into Source! I've always wanted to make a train map, or somehow incorporate a train as the mainstay of a map one way or another.

I do agree about the texturing though, the model looks nice enough to where it probably deserves it. Either way though, looks like a really good interpretation of the real deal. The textures would also allow you to get some nice bump maps in there to spruce it up!

My class mates have been trying to encourage me to model the interior as well but it just seems like a lot of work. I think the interior would be harder to model than the exterior but that said, I think I could get away with modeling the interior to a lower standard than the exterior of it.

Do you remember the train engine model in HL2? The one that has a really low-res texture? Well, it has a semi-cabin just enough to appear like a space behind the glass when looking at it from the ground. That's all I meant by building an interior. If you keep the glass pretty smokey, it could still be believable. -Even just as an empty box inside.

Good idea.

That looks pretty awesome! What's it going to be used in? -I'm guessing a game of some sort eh?

-Is it just me or do I see image artifacts in the texture used (as if it was a really low-res photo-realistic texture)? Like on the magazine clip?

But if you're getting away with texturing this with just a 128x128px then I commend you. That looks really nice.

Not going to be used in anything unless somebody wants to take it and actually use it, the texture I've made myself [I'm terrible at texturing FYI] and it's 512x512, should have made it higher res but that would have meant more work.
The 'artifact' on the clip was probably just error while attempting to add dirt layers over the magazine or maybe even the camo [No weapon is perfectly spit shine regardless of how new it is] layer being added over top. Not sure.

Hi all. I don 't usually post anything in this thread, usually because I'm too shy about comments, but I'd like to get some feedback.

I'm wanting to get more into digital matte painting and 2D environment art, and have been experimenting with hand-drawn stuff scanned into the computer to figure out what my 'style' is, if I have one at all.

This is some stuff I've done this year in my free time:

"Crack"
User posted image
"Reservoir"
User posted image
"Moon Base"
User posted image
All of these images started off with some kind of sketch on paper, and then that sketch develops into hard lines which I scan in to see what I feel like doing with it in Photoshop. I own an Intuos 3 Wacom tablet (6x8") I purchased for $300 back in 2007, and feel guilty about how little I've used it. So, now being done with school, this is my creative outlet when I get the motivation and time.

Which one do you guys like or dislike the most? What might you like/dislike about them?

Thanks! :hee:

Hi Riven,

My first thoughts of the first picture was, wow, that's interesting. I haven't often seen this type of art. First of all, the drawing is drawn seamless into the photo, so that's very well done. I like the drawing itself as well. Did you come up with some background story for the structure?

In the back in the middle, there's a few buildings, did you add those yourself? The reason I'm asking is because the building on the right looks half invisible. This might be just an optical illusion, but it did catch my attention. I also noticed that these buildings look more straight than the buildings on the far end, a little more on the left.

The second drawing I have nothing to say about other than it looks perfect to me. I like it a lot, and the rock formations in the background makes the drawing even more atmospheric.

I like the little details in the third drawing. If I had to choose one of the three drawings to be printed as a poster in my room, it wouldn't be this one because it doesn't feel as 'relaxing' as the other two, but again, the small details in this drawing is what makes it so good. The only real complaint I got here is that the stars seem to only appear above the structure, and not in the center of the drawing, but I'm not sure if this was intentional.

Please note that I'm just trying to be as critic as possible, coming from someone with barely any understanding of drawing!

Thank you for sharing your drawings, I really like your style and I hope to see more soon :)

Hey thanks for commenting Nib!

In regards to the first pic "Crack", the idea was to mimic those great environment artists and matte painters that can tell a story in an image. I'm not good at drawing people or even up close figures, so I like to draw environment scenes, and it makes a little hard for me to tell a story without some kind of human element. So I like to let people infer their own background story out of the image; if that image works well enough to do it.

The more I look at it, I see the crooked buildings in the corner, they should have been adjusted a bit more :P

About "Moon Base", -There probably should have been more stars between the structure and the planet in the center.

If you like the style of "Crack", I could definitely do more like that. It is black and white because that made it easier to blend all the different photos and drawing together. And it was good practice for me having not done that sort of thing very much. I didn't have to worry about color so much. I can definitely work on that a bit more. That's the only one that's truly a digital 'matte' painting since it used so many photos.

Thanks for the critique. It helps out a lot; keeps me motivated. :hee:

How did I not see this before?

My input: those are f-ing rad. Good job. I wish I could get my paints (real or digital) looking like that.
Blame it on Microsoft, God does.

Nice ones Riven. "Reservoir" looks very Red Faction Guerrilla-esque.

Thanks guys! (no really, this get's me excited to start working on a new one!)

Inspiration for Reservoir was taken from one of my favorite artist/architect: Lebbeus Woods. A lot of post war reconstruction/ fungus architecture. Very cool stuff.
