The beta was quite fun, but then it became popular.

I only played the betas back when I was in high school. Since one of the last betas (don't remember which) I stopped playing because it got really annoying. Then dod came out and I picked that up around one of the later betas, had to take some time to adjust to the retail 1.0 though. But now it's all good and I don't touch CS.

Oh man, John, you're asking for it here

No, it isn't that way with all games, not ones that are harder to play or less popular (still being popular though).

Whenever I play dod the majority of the people playing are skilled and very far from annoying (besides killing you constantly)

In CS There's almost always some person doing their hardest to annoy everyone on the server by being an ass. And they usually come in spades.

But as for the actual games them selves, in a LAN or something as such I'd rather play CS, simply because dod isn't as fun with a small group of people unless the map is incredibly small. I don't really play anything else (HL related) to be honest. Most deathmatches are fun with two or more people.

But if you're an admin on a server, like when i was[b4 the server stopped] you can always kick them if they're ruining the game

I shouldn't have to be an admin to play an enjoyable game of anything ...

The more I look back at it, the CS community is probably no worse than any other big game. Just looking at HL and its mods you have the clueless masses playing killboxes in HLDM, a bunch of cheaters and people who take the game way too seriously in TFC, a ton of retards in the NS community... anyways, CS is still alot of fun even after all these years, and nothing can be more satisfying than blasting people with pistol headshots and making them look like fools. I didn't like the direction the betas took in the beginning, but I must admit they made a kickass mod in the end.

I first got CS with my HL platinum pack, that wouldve been 1.0. Then I dl'ed 1.5 and got bots for it. I only ever play CS against bots or at LANs, and not very often.

BTW, the CS fags can't be as bad as the BF42 fags. Ever had a CS n00b repeatedly bazooka your own teammates just because they "stole" a plane? Whats worse is, the people who do that sort of thing until they actually get to use the plane can't fly the plane and crash into a hill or something. Which is why I don't play games online.

The problem with all games is that once they reach a certain amount of appeal, all the idiots start flooding the damn thing. Take NS for example. With v1.0 and v2.0, the NS community hardly had anyone out to annoy everyone else, and people were, for the most part, freindly to the new players. Compared to now, the NS community was a damned utopia. But then NS v3.0 came out, and with it the combat mode, which was essentially NS with all the factors that made it such the intelligent, team-roientated game it was stripped away. What was left was a frantic, simplistic, and overly-unbalanced game mode that attracted people whgo were too daunted by the classic NS mode.

This, of course, atrracted hundreds upon hundreds of people. whose only online gaming experience was CS. And with them came the vulgarity, the cheaters, the tkers and so on. I'm not trying to say that these weren't present before combat was introduced, they were definately in the minority. Of course, once people were done raping the combat mode of all it's worth, they all jumped into the classic game maps:

"how do i increase my damage?"

"where's the upgrade menu?"

"how do I get leap?"

"what the hell is a sensory chamber"?

"hey! how come I respawned as a skulk? Where's my cloaked-carapace-celerity onos?!"

"oh wow, you can go INSIDE the command console?!"

"wow, the mapper did a really good job on those turrets! The entity setup must be insane!"

Ok, fair enough, some of those are over-exagerrated. But some of them do show up on classic NS games, and if they showed up every now and then, in a polite tone of voice, I wouldn't care. But people have to get angry, they spam the message area, and furthermore, effectively give up trying to understand and just go on vain killing spree. Coupled with the ever increasingly-unbalanced gameplay, NS's reputation as a community and mod is dwindling. It's even worse on the Friendly Fire servers...

[/RANT]

Oh man, that felt good. Ramble ramble ramble...

personally, i never liked CS, not because of the game, or the community, but because i like the simplicity of HLDM only.

TFC never appealed to me either, so its not game issues or the people it attracts.

IMO, nothing beats a good game of DM.. my favorite of all, ever made for HL was Oz Deathmatch.. simple bliss

Well, that's because you play against bots... It's a lot more fun to imagine the other players you just killed swearing and getting really pissed off for taking the game too seriously.

Beta 7.0, about a week before 7.1 was released. I resented having to suggest that I am a l337 haxor by voting so, however. I don't play anymore, but two strong years and a week third is definitely no small amount.

OtZman - of course it's not fun if you're playing against HL bots, they're all third party and as such, not professionally made. If you want to play a fps with semi-intelligent bots, frankly I've found the UT series to be the game of choice. Utterly trashes the rest in single player replay.

The UT bots are good, but I don't think they offer up that much of a challenge. I usually set the difficulty to adjust to my skill, and I usually end up still trouncing them on "Godlike." But they are fun, though.

I defy anyone to trounce the (Godlike) UT bots in a setting that favours bot strengths, such as a busy deathmatch game (especially if you max. out all their skills). It is just not humanly possible to compete with them for accuracy, at least with hitscan weapons.

However, they are easy to exploit in any game that favours tactical or intelligent play over sheer accuracy and reactions.

I never really mess with the base skill adjustments, but I normally play with the bot base skill set to Godlike... And I normally end up winning. shrug

Normally, in a one-on-one match, I'll get my ass handed to me, but if there are 3-4 of them in a game, I normall win.

You missed my comparison. My comparison was not UT Bots v. Players. My comparison was UT Bots v. Bots in any other deathmatch FPS. In this comparison, UT Bots have always been completely superior, imo. It's not just them being better. For example, many CS bots run around like retards, but once you confront one, they are deadly accurate. Sure the difficulty rating is therefore high, but the fun rating is like 0. Granted UT bots still have characteristics that make them play less strategically than humans; my opinion is that these properties are much further muted in UT than in other games. Obviously, the more complex the team game, the more exploitable they are (Assualt gameplay, for example), but I've still found them to be worthwhile competitors, even in CTF maps (although once I've learned their set defensive points it gets a bit more dull).

I really don't think this game is balanced. It just seems like a whack of guns thrown in with really odd values given to them. So many guns that should waste people take forever, and other guns just plain own you. It's fun, but far from balanced.

:| like what, pray tell? =P

on average the pistols take 2-4 shots in the chest to kill. 1-2 headshots.

on average the sub machine guns take 3-5 shots in the chest to kill. 1-2 headshots.

on average the rifles take 2-3 shots in the chest to kill. 1 headshot

and the sniper rifles vary from 1 shot (awp) to 3 (auto sniper)

i think these are fairly realistic balances, with the possible exception of the glock, for gameplay's sake.

Last time I checked if you get shot in THE FACE you'll die. In my personal opinion (as you've bitched at me time and time again about  ) I don't think CS is very balanced. Granted there are things I don't like about dod's weapon roster, but, to be honest, the more you play with them the better you get. And the last times I played CS those guns were damn innaccurate ... I'm getting really sick of the 'random pattern' bullet system for the guns.

Don't take any of this personally, I just felt like Lashing out at CS

:/ ... well obviously anything would kill you in 1 shot at the head ... but its made 1-2 headshots for the purposes of gameplay, so that a glock isnt as good as an ak-47 lol. i use the term "realism" loosely ... yes the realism in cs is "compromised" but its still cool
