if it existed in the 70's and 80's, it was prolly great..

there are a few good groups now, but nothing memorable.

sadly, i doubt anyone will be listening to any music 25 years from now, created today.. but you can tune in 70 and 80's everywhere in the US

Ugh- I'm sorry, but most 80's music doesn nothing but piss me off. I don't want to hear simplistic guitarwork with a warbling singer fighting to gain direction over a crappy synth drum machine. That, and hair bands are definitive of evil.

But, as for likes, here are a few that I'm currently thinking of:
The Doors ( http://www.thedoors.com/ )
The Smashing Pumpkins ( http://www.spfc.org/ )
Nick Drake ( http://www.nickdrake.com/ )
Interpol ( http://www.interpolny.com/news.php )
Joy Division ( can't find a page for 'em - Kinda like an old-school Interpol)
Sigur Ros ( http://www.sigur-ros.com/ )
Soul Coughing ( http://www.scug.net/ )
My Bloody Valentine (Can't find a page- they were in the Lost in Translation soundtrack, if you care)
Jon Brion ( http://www.jonbrion.com/jonbrion.html )

That's about it for now, I guess...

I don't believe so. There are two different covenants. One is death metal and this one is like industrial. I accidentally downloaded some of the other stuff and it was just annoying, I do have some crazy metal but it has to be just 'right' for me to really want to listen to it. If anything if you want to check out my Covenant sample the song "Call the ships to Port" or "Monochrome" two great songs.

dunno, actually, nothing made today seems to be around long already.

i admit, i mainly listen to NPR radio, but i do listen to music at times.

it just seemed that songs stayed on the top 40 list much longer back then, even weird songs like "Le Freak" stayed in the top ten for??? 20 weeks maybe..

anywho's i could be wrong ....again.... but i don't think so this time.. music comes and goes faster now.

look at the lists posted here.. the commonality??? 80's rock bands..

I agree that there seem to be a lot more disposable music nowadays, especially due to the rise of MTV (and it's inherant tendancy to focus on artists that make money and gain ratings rather than actual talent). I find it sad that the 90s will probably be remembered (musically) as the decade when manufactured bands and an over-saturatated rock scene ruled the roost. This decade seems set to follow in it's footsteps .

I own Geogaddi, and have a few songs from the Future Sound of London...

Yeah, I like the genre, but I'm pretty picky over who I like in it... A few I think are worth mentioning:
The Thievery Corporation
Massive Attack (these two are pretty popular, I'm betting you've heard of them)
Timo Mass (has a few decent tracks)
Gotan Project (kind of a jazzy electronica feel to it)
Goldfrapp (just some really beautiful songs).

Wow. Lots of metal bands listed here.

I like The Whitlams (http://thewhitlams.com). Not much else, apart from electronica which, for some reason, everyone seems to find very amusing. Probably because they're all fools.

Orbital is f**king awesome. Anyway:

Garbage
Tool
NIN
Radiohead
STP
The Offspring (not so much anymore, but they're still okay)
U2 (simply an awesome band)
Chris Cornell's stuff (Sound Garden, Solo, AudioSlave, etc..)
PerlJam (its okay from time to time)
Alien Ant Farm (I hate their rendition of Smooth Criminal, But they're good otherwise)
The Temptations (I'm sure this looks random)
Fiona Apple (Been listening to her a lot lately)
No Doubt (Selective songs, but Tragic Kingdom, didn't care for their first album much)
The Darkness (Too goofy and yet cool to not like them)
Led Zeplin (they've been growing on me lately)
Red Hot Chilli Peppers (bet you didn't see that one coming)

Then there's always a barrage of other things that are good: Clapton, Frampton, Sting/Police, etc...

Oh, also, check out Fishbone, they're alright from time to time ... a little weird sometimes though.

with the exception of the 80's monster metal bands, our tastes seem to suffer agisms..

many of the newer groups are good though, so i cannot complain much.

it is however nice to see so many acknowledge the 80's for what it was..

i don't know about the rest of you, but i plan on being around for the next 20 years, lets meet up here at SP and decide if the groups of today are still being played... i am betting there will still be 80's metal on the airways

Anyone whos got Metallica on thier list should try Megadeth. The lead singer of Megadeth was the original Lead guitarist and singer of metallica. He also wrote most of the songs on the first 2 Metallica albums, but was never in the band when they started releasing albums.

I've listened to a few Megadeath songs before, after learning of Dave Mustaine's part in the first Metallica album. But it just seemed so stale and dull. Metallica were exciting, heavy and fast, but Megadeath seemed to never reach that same level Metallica did on their first album. Meh, reccommend something and I'l give 'em another shot.

Youthanasia, Train Of Consequences, Ashes In Your Mouth, and the one Metallica couldn't do even if they wanted to- Hanger 18. That song is so filled with uber paced solos I'm suprised they didn't die in the making of it. Whats more scary is when they play it live, they play it even faster! Mainly try anything from Youthanasia or Rust in Peace albums.

Though you're obviously not observant to skillfulness in song writing  The writing of Megadeth songs is far superior to Metallica. Megadeth is written all at once, the drums sounds relate to the music. With metallica they make a drum beat, slap on a riff and whack on some fable stories for lyrics.

True Dave Mustaines voice is hard to like, but it's very unique and fits the music- I couldn't imagine Hetfield singing it. The closest Hetfield ever got to being like Mustaine was on the Kill 'Em All album. He only sung it like that because Mustaine did when he wrote all the songs from it

Hanger 18 does indeed have some insane solos, but insane solos do not make a song good. Still not convinced I'm afraid, and I still think Megadeath are stale and dull in comparison to Metallica. Although there are some nice riffs. And Train Of Consequences reminded me more of Pearl Jam than Thrash.

Though you're obviously not observant to skillfulness in song writing  The writing of Megadeth songs is far superior to Metallica. Megadeth is written all at once, the drums sounds relate to the music. With metallica they make a drum beat, slap on a riff and whack on some fable stories for lyrics.
...What's your point?
True Dave Mustaines voice is hard to like, but it's very unique and fits the music- I couldn't imagine Hetfield singing it. The closest Hetfield ever got to being like Mustaine was on the Kill 'Em All album. He only sung it like that because Mustaine did when he wrote all the songs from it
Ah, I wondered why his voice was so s**te on one album, and then the next year on Metallica's second album he could actually sing. He was imitating Dave!

Orph list your bands, I'm sure we will know some of them
dude, i couldn't even begin, cause honestly, i dunno if the songs i listen to most even have "bands"

yeah sure, i love AC/DC and Pink Floyd, but i am just as apt to listen to ABBA, Karen Carpenter or Air Supply, i have a fairly wide range, as long as its rock, and has words you can comprehend without a code book.

music thats a no-no.. rap, country, opera

odd ball stuff like beethoven, bach and their ilk, i could listen to all day long.

Anything and everything thats decent really. Monqui knows my obsession with music well...

Electronic - Afx/AphexTwin, Autechre, Plaid, Boards Of Canada, Fischerspooner, Bogdan Raczynski, Cylob.. loads and loads - all from Warp or Rephlex records

Metal - KMFDM, NIN, Ministry, FLA, Pop Will Eat Itself, Graveland, Crowbar... etc etc

Indie/Rock - the cure, the clash, the smiths, radiohead.. basically hundreds of bands, artists, styles.. too numerous to begin listing. My CD collection is about 200/300/400 CD's (not entirely sure now)

I'm quite a geek about it all.. a fully paid up member of the muso society :E

I'm not so much into Aphex twin. In fact, to be honest I think 2/3 of
his stuff is utter crap. But everyone else under the sun who likes
electronic music seems to think he's a god. Really I've tried to like
his music, but I just don't, and I don't understand how everyone likes
it. Maybe Gwil could shed some light on this.

The Broadways! If you like them, check out the Lawrence Arms. It has Brendan and Chris from The Broadways and they're one of the very few bands I consider to be good pop punk (Apathy and Exhaustion is one of the best albums ever made).

If you're into hardcore at all (I saw you had some Sick of it All), you should check out Trial By Fire, Break the Silence, and Strike Anywhere.

on a related issue, it has been said that "stairway to heaven" is the #1 most requested song in the united states, according to the polls i have heard on many rock stations i have listened to.. (most recently on yak_fighter home station X103 F.M. in Indianapolis Indiana)

my question, if its even answerable, does the rest of the world share this belief? is zepplins song the best ever?

For me, there's no such thing as best song ever. It's just too damned hard to choose. It's really more of a "what song am I enjoying the most right now?" for me, as you're going to get sick of a song eventually.

no, thats not what i asked, i don't think zepplins song is the best either, but the polls say otherwise, what i am asking is, has anyone from outside the US ever heard this?? i wanna know if its as popular there as well.

For those who listen to In Flames it might interest you to know the lead singer was the basist of soilwork, who are much much better in my opinion. They are a lot heavier though...
