if it existed in the 70's and 80's, it was prolly great..
there are a few good groups now, but nothing memorable.
sadly, i doubt anyone will be listening to any music 25 years from now, created today.. but you can tune in 70 and 80's everywhere in the US

ha, my playlist has never been accused of having 'good taste' before. There's about 1000 other songs that drive some people insane, not counting all the screaming and growling metal and the evil german singers.

Just wondering Orph.. What makes you think people won't listen to today's music 25 years from now?

I agree that there seem to be a lot more disposable music nowadays, especially due to the rise of MTV (and it's inherant tendancy to focus on artists that make money and gain ratings rather than actual talent). I find it sad that the 90s will probably be remembered (musically) as the decade when manufactured bands and an over-saturatated rock scene ruled the roost. This decade seems set to follow in it's footsteps .

I think the 90s will be remembered for grunge and nu-metal.

I own Geogaddi, and have a few songs from the Future Sound of London...
Yeah, I like the genre, but I'm pretty picky over who I like in it... A few I think are worth mentioning:
The Thievery Corporation
Massive Attack (these two are pretty popular, I'm betting you've heard of them)
Timo Mass (has a few decent tracks)
Gotan Project (kind of a jazzy electronica feel to it)
Goldfrapp (just some really beautiful songs).

Orbital is f**king awesome. Anyway:
Garbage
Tool
NIN
Radiohead
STP
The Offspring (not so much anymore, but they're still okay)
U2 (simply an awesome band)
Chris Cornell's stuff (Sound Garden, Solo, AudioSlave, etc..)
PerlJam (its okay from time to time)
Alien Ant Farm (I hate their rendition of Smooth Criminal, But they're good otherwise)
The Temptations (I'm sure this looks random)
Fiona Apple (Been listening to her a lot lately)
No Doubt (Selective songs, but Tragic Kingdom, didn't care for their first album much)
The Darkness (Too goofy and yet cool to not like them)
Led Zeplin (they've been growing on me lately)
Red Hot Chilli Peppers (bet you didn't see that one coming)
Then there's always a barrage of other things that are good: Clapton, Frampton, Sting/Police, etc...
Oh, also, check out Fishbone, they're alright from time to time ... a little weird sometimes though.

with the exception of the 80's monster metal bands, our tastes seem to suffer agisms..
many of the newer groups are good though, so i cannot complain much.
it is however nice to see so many acknowledge the 80's for what it was..
i don't know about the rest of you, but i plan on being around for the next 20 years, lets meet up here at SP and decide if the groups of today are still being played... i am betting there will still be 80's metal on the airways

Orph list your bands, I'm sure we will know some of them
Trust me if there was any age I could live in apart from now/future it would be 1980's in America, the start of the thrash metal years  I have the hair for it! (long hair with strange bits going curly on the end which is annoying...)

Anyone whos got Metallica on thier list should try Megadeth. The lead singer of Megadeth was the original Lead guitarist and singer of metallica. He also wrote most of the songs on the first 2 Metallica albums, but was never in the band when they started releasing albums.

Your list is about 2/3 the size of mine Reno
I have more variation in mine  Goes from Anime Japanese pop, to Death Metal, to classical, to Electronica back round to LMF (Lazy mother f**kers) a Chinese rap group- very funny to listen to

I'm not so much into Aphex twin. In fact, to be honest I think 2/3 of
his stuff is utter crap. But everyone else under the sun who likes
electronic music seems to think he's a god. Really I've tried to like
his music, but I just don't, and I don't understand how everyone likes
it. Maybe Gwil could shed some light on this.

on a related issue, it has been said that "stairway to heaven" is the #1 most requested song in the united states, according to the polls i have heard on many rock stations i have listened to.. (most recently on yak_fighter home station X103 F.M. in Indianapolis Indiana)
my question, if its even answerable, does the rest of the world share this belief? is zepplins song the best ever?

For me, there's no such thing as best song ever. It's just too damned hard to choose. It's really more of a "what song am I enjoying the most right now?" for me, as you're going to get sick of a song eventually.

For those who listen to In Flames it might interest you to know the lead singer was the basist of soilwork, who are much much better in my opinion. They are a lot heavier though...
