So a few hours ago i took out the sims and noticed that it had a tiny crack on the inside of the disc about centimeter [see metric is more used than english  ] so i installed it and it all went well, then i took it out and installed photo shop 7, after that i was a bit bored so i decided to play the sims, i put in the disc and shut the Drive door on my case and i heard somewhat of an explsion and the drive door burst open, i pressed the open button on my rewriter and it wouldnt open so i turned of my pc and quickly started it up again and opened the rewriter to see that the disc had-Vanished!- apart from a few shards, I shut down my pc and opened it up and took out the rewriter for inspection, with a little shake a load of shards of the Cd came pouring out of it.

Can anyone tell me WTF has happened? lol has this happened to any of you before?

Well isn't it obvious? Seems to me you have tiny evil elves living inside your computer.

I think the computer is dropping you a big hint that it doesn't want to waste its clock cycles on getting your sims to go to the bathroom.

The Sims? More like "milk-a-damn-franchise-for-all-its-worth". The sims is the stupidest game I ever played. "Build a house them put a sim in; and watch them interact!"

Oh really?

Does going outside and lighting a bottle rocket in your pants stimulate the same feeling as you get when playing The Sims? I believe so.

Hypothesis:

You left the CD in a sunny location. the UV radiation degraded the plastic makeing it very brittle. a small crack formed due to some stress (i.e. dropping it). the centrifigal force exerted on the CD when it was spun up was enough to cause that small crack to propogate rapidly thoughout the material causing catastrophic structural failure.

Or the CD just couldnt take life anymore.

What speed was the drive? Because it sounded like it was trying to burn it at high speeds to me, and the crack made it explode. DVD burnerd do the same thing all the time, if there is the tinyist scrach on the disk, then it shatters because of the high speed.

has the re-writer survived?

if so, you should get some better quality discs to back up all your pirated stuff (ps7, sims etc. )

Can't a severly cracked disc only spin at about 24x before shattering? (I can't remember what the rpms are, but I think they're just 00 after the speed.)

If you have something like a 55x RW, I wouldn't be surprised if normal scratches caused the CD to 'explode'

I've seen some tests on this stuff ... it's gruesom (Shards of plastic loging in material more durable then muscle tissue and mangling up CD drive covers)

Also ... you didn't do something stupid like ... put the cd in the microwave first, did you?

But the sun would have the same effect, as TB said. This is why you're not suppose to leave them in the sun.

I did read it, I said that it sounded like you were trying to burn a disk at high speeds, maybe you comp f'd-up and it started burning it instead, dont ask me how this could happen I was merely stating that cracked disks shatter at high speeds when a burn is attempted.

No, being in a drawer is a pretty good way to make this happen, especially if you have a fast reader. The cd would get chipped scratched and so on to holy hell.

My friends had a CD-ROM that would do that occasionally... put a CDS in, hear a god-awful grinding noise, jab the eject button- no more CD. We had to physically take the drive apart in order to get the poor CD out. The crazy thing is, it still runs just fine.
