I'm actually using that particular image by Goodbrush for some Nightwatch work. Shame on those Star Wars people. Overall though, that Star Wars copy thing doesn't even come close to the original in terms of quality and composition.

Look at the beam crossing from the left to the right closest to the camera - not only is it in the exact same position and angle as in the original art, but it has other beams coming out of its left hand "bulk" in almost the exact same area as in the original also. Obviously its not identical, but there is similarity enough to make it pretty clear in my eyes that its this piece of art they used as a base.

I agree with Junkie, it's poorly replicated.

You can copy art all you want, if you change something its called apropriation and there's nothing wrong with that
Now saying if the final item looks good is another question entirly. Also, mentioning what they were 'inspired' by, meaning artist, giving credit and such, there's no grounds for it being 'wrong' or something like that.

It looks amazing, but its not a great replication of the original picture. Then again the word Concept comes to mind

You said this is from Star Wars right. If it is, its not from the original 3 episodes. So as long as they didnt take anything from those ones I couldnt much care.

I never said it was from star wars, bloody hell would it have been THAT hard to re-read my post if you weren't sure?
I mentioned star wars because the game this is from, Laghaim, entirely ripped of Star Wars' opening sequence with the text floating into space...or at least the trailer did.

So what you're saying then, ReNo, is that this is the hidden trailer for episode 3???

well the first and second were crap... 'cept for maybe the podracer race in the first one and the Yoda fight in the end of the second, other than that... Not too much compared to the original.

I was just exaggerating WC, obviously its not the biggest rip off to have been carried out over the past 100 years.

If these guys didn't have his permission, it is highly unethical, and unprofessional to attempt to make money from off of Goodbrush's concept image. Whether they altered it slightly or not, his 'concept' art successfully spawned a visual idea, which this company developed into a fully realized 3d work. Goodbrush should get due compensation, as should any artist. Famous or not.

I do agree that they took more than mearly his idea. That is wrong, but the concept of a trench with beams going across is something so vague that anyone could do.
They could have altered it. But I am sure the artist took his idea from something else himself. There looks to be elements of the homeworld concept arts in there. The style in general that is.

I remember that picture too from my old contest map that I didn't finish. It does look quite similar in both pictures, and I wouldn't doubt that they used it as a base. Bit out of order really, but there could be other developers doing things like this (assuming it wasn't their original creation) without anybody noticing.

that is too similar to be a coincidence or such. I agree, Goodbrush should be credited and even compensated for the use of his works as conceptual art used in creating a major (wouldnt be major if it wasnt in the trailer) scene of the game, which they subsequently make money off of. Unless they already have his permission, i dont know how it cant be seen as anything but rip.

i hate to be narrow minded about this guys BUT.. if visual ideas were enuff to demonstrate proof of a rip-off.. the automobiles wouldn't have 4 tires, and an internal combustion engine...
give it the benefit of the doubt, there are similarities between the two screenshots, but hardly striking similarities

I think it is obviously 'inspired by' that Goodbrush original picture, and only a madman would disagree- in addition to what's already been said, it even has the lighting pointing in the same direction! (i.e. shadows cast in same places) However, what they're going to do with it at the end of the day or whatever their nefarious plans are, are another matter which we can't really comment on.

Please if you want a star wars ripoff watch "Transformers: The Movie"...
Floating text into the distance just like star wars, light pistols and light sabres (Megatron uses it to gash a hole in Optimus Prime).
I watch that film too much
