Is there a way to make water in HL that won't drown you when you are submerged?

I believe it was somehow done in Issues, the single player HL mod released recently. In that there was a room which flooded, and you could use some air canisters or something to stop you from drowning. I don't know how the effect was achieved, but if it can be faked like they did it, I'm sure it could somehow be done the way you want also. Sorry I can't be more help.

if you are inside any entity that makes you swim, you will also be able to drown. func_water, unclipped sky, illusionaries with contents of -3, etc. the hl.fgd has an item_airtank, but not all mods share it.

you could possibly use a trigger_hurt with a negative value, but that would effect normal kills, and the noise would be just a little bit annoying.

The answer is no, unless you want to code your own mod.

LOL orph

I kinda overlooked the fact that Issues most likely used SOHL at the very least in the way of additional code, so Lep is probably correct in his thinking.

Fishy's solution is hugely flawed as he said, since if you went in the water while injured you would be healed up until drowning damage kicked in, and at that point you would stay at constant health (fi you set the damage amount correctly).

Anyway, if you are making a single player mod, then its quite possible there might be additional entity properties available to you in SOHL that could allow for this, so it might be worth looking into. If its for HLDM or some other mod, its unlikely you will get this working.

Maybe you can just make fake water? Like make a custom water texture, make the box an illusionary and use a trigger push and put it on up so it feels like your swimming ^_^. I just guess

There is a entity that is called air_container of something it's in the section of the list that has the anti_toxen and stuff if you put that in that underwater, you can go up to it and it with give you more air. But you can only use one once soo.. yea

I think a good cheat may be to use a water texture on a non-water entity brush, such as a func_illusionary, and maybe just alter the gravity in that space. Does that make sense?

Yes you did, my apologies.

Hey you could also put a thin sound trigger right above the water. One that plays a splash sound, and one to trigger a looped underwater bubbly sound. It would also turn it off when you climbed out.

Well?

Ugh- that would just be horrible though. Have you ever played in low gravity? Have you ever jumped in one direction, and then wanted to change trajectory? Do you remember how slow and painful that was?

Being in the water would be just like that then. I mean, as a solution, it sort of works, but it would be hell trying to play a game in it.

They don't work. They were never coded into HL, you have to code a new mod to make them work I believe... HL is filled with useless crap and models that don't work.

I've used them in a map, and have them work. They only work once though... If youre underwater, and you start drowning, touch one of these and you stop drowning for a while.

Put little glass domes around that you can swim up in to from underneath, and they are full of air.

Well, the air tank i put in the map is reuseable... it just takes a bit of time, and then it resupplies itself, sort of like weapons coming back in multiplayer. I havnt had any problems with it not working or anything... (also, thats on a non-patched version of Half-Life, installed from the disc and played with no mods whatsoever.) I really wonder why anyone is not able to get them working.

Also, that is a novel idea about the air domes... ...i wonder why i never thought of it... ....seeing as this is a non-technological map im working on, i may just trade my perfectly functioning airtanks for some natural-rock-formation air pockets...

Natural rock formations would be a lot easier to construct and look way nicer than glass domes. TAKE THAT HORNPIPE!

That would be a cool idea for a level is to be all underwater and have to follow a rope or trail of lighted poles. And along the way you have to fight inkies but make sure you don't go far from the trail becouse you won't be able to find any air tanks

I'm a nerd :dorky:
